Stars usually maintain neutral composure when promoting a project or talking about coworkers in the public eye. But Dominic Monaghan, who you may remember as Charlie from Lost or Merry from Lord of the Rings, recently did away with niceties on both fronts. Monaghan, who was on Twitter answering questions, lashed out against Lost costar Matthew Fox when a fan asked about him. But this was more than just a squabble over working differences, with Dominic outright calling Fox a woman beater.

Dominic was participating in a Twitter-based Q&A to promote his new series, when a user told him: “holla at matthew fox and tell him to get a twitter i beg of you.” And rather than ignore the comment, Monaghan lashed out against his former costar:

Dominic’s Tweet wasn’t filled with any surprising allegations; Fox has a rather unpalatable gossip history, from a DUI to rumors of cheating on his wife with prostitutes. But the most notable sordid event in his past is a 2011 incident where he allegedly punched a female bus driver in the breasts and groin. Despite the evidence, reactions to the Tweet were also unsurprising, with fans leaping to Fox’s defense and Dominic standing by his statement:

Other Fox fans accused Dominic of “spreading rumors based on TMZ” and mentioned how he “lost so much respect from me.” Despite the backlash, Monaghan’s last Tweet on the subject was concise, unapologetic and addressed to those saying Fox should sue for defamation: “It’s very difficult to sue someone for speaking the truth.” Fox has yet to comment on the situation.
