Francesca Eastwood is the reality-star daughter of Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood. This week photos emerged on the blog of indie photographer Tyler Shields of he and Francesca burning the $100k red crocodile Hermes Birkin bag and then slicing it up with a chain saw. It was an attempt at being artistic, provocative. Well, provoke it did.
Shields’ companion text reads:
Destruction is a beautiful version of freedom…
Would you want this bag?
Are you sad to see me destroy it?
For the people who don’t know a Birkin is the most sought after bag in the entire world there is a waiting list and some of them can run upwards of $100,000. This is the red Crocodile Birkin VS the red $200 chainsaw and 4 dollars of gasoline!
And I have to get personal here for a second, but really? Do we really need someone to point out that to some people, money has no meaning? I mean, we see it on TV every day. To me it’s not Francesca and Tyler burning the thing that is actually so important — it’s that they thought they were being deep. “Destruction is a beautiful version of freedom?” Yeah thanks, Donnie Darko. Okay, soapbox over! Sorry. You definitely don’t have to listen to me on this, especially since we’re better off letting the reaction of the Twittersphere speak for itself. Check out some of the backlash Francesca received from her followers:
There are a lot more like those that sort of drive the point further and further home. But some fans are super into it, leaving positive responses on Twitter. Check out the rest of the shoot in the gallery, as well as a smattering of different reactions to the photos going public. Oh, and if the Birkin isn’t your thing, they destroyed some Louboutins, too.
What do you think of these two celebs burning a Birkin bag?

..the spirit of the croc that skin belonged to must be extremely mad… not only did he have to die to become a purse, but no one can enjoy wearing his skin. poor croc.

This capitalistic world sure makes this world economy stickier.

I hate celebrities. Fucking donate it to charity. If I’m ever rich I’m gonna live a middle class lifestyle just so my kids don’t grow up to be selfish a-holes like this

No purse is worth 100k

I can certainly appreciate the statement she’s trying to make, but to spend so much on a bag to destroy it when she could have done so many other worthy things with that money is just asinine.
guest
They killed the animal once, so let’s kill it again! Seems smart.
guest
@purple_cuts@xanga - To make up for it I’d like to throw them both in a swamp in Florida. “To make a statement” of course, so it’s totally ok. ; D
guest
Well, if she had $100,000 to burn (sorry, bad pun), I have a mortgage I don’t mind someone paying.
guest
I mean, really it’s her money and everything, but still a very stupid way to make a tired “statement” that’s been made many times before, and more effectively. Yes, yes, we all know people place way too much value on material things.

bag made with so much cruelty (snake, calves or anothers animal’s skin I don’t remember), it is something CRUEL.
Don’t use it, and burn it, is something STUPID.
Plus, with the amount of money that cost this bag, I guess the number of children we can feed is huge. So it is also STUPID and CRUEL.

why hate on someone who destroys an expensive bag?
you might as well blame people for making $100k bags in the first place.
and then you can blame people for not sharing their income and paying off your bills
but you’ll never look back to how there’s people worse off than you
and that if you eat a meal less per day, or buy less clothes and see them as mere articles of thermal insulatoryou can save up enough to improve the living condition of those whom are less blessed.
and how about don’t have kids if you can’t afford to take care of their needs and guide them to a good life?
of course, it’s so easy to judge others and mourn for yourself
Burning an Hermes Birkin should remind people that in the end, it is A BAG.

So stupid. Sell it and donate the money to charity. That would have been meaningful. It’s irresponsible of her boyfriend “artist” or whatever to destroy expensive things in order to make a statement. That is what’s careless and more vain than owning a Birkin and enjoying it especially if you did work hard to buy it. All you are doing is destroying money and someone else’s hard work when they made that bag with their bare hands. It’s insulting to them and the animal who died in order for that bag to have been made. This isn’t art. A Birkin bag at least is. It takes so many man hours to make one. If you’re against expensive couture than sell it and give the money to a few charities…

I just don’t understand why it’s “artistic” to set it on fire…

i saw the episode on tv i guess i’m not the only one thinking that the statement is cliche.

i cant believe people actually tweeted her to yell at her lol…. she didnt just burn it for the hell of it.. it was a photoshoot… saying she could have donated it or whatever… it wasnt her choice.. SHE didnt buy it, her boyfriend did. getting mad over a silly little purse.. but i dont hear you bitching about donating to charity or shit when your favorite celebrity buys a new car or something they dont need haha….people need to get over it and shut up.
guest
unnecessary. all of it. the 100,000 dollar bag, the burning of it, their attempt at “art”. unnecessary.

Everyone needs to freaking chillI. YES it is a waste YES it is stupid, but it’s her wasteful stupidity. Don’t get me wrong I definitely agree that people with too much money should just donate it and not just set things on fire, but I highly highly doubt that the material and labour costed 100K to make the purse. Second, it’s just the same as a celebrity who buys dozens of cars and never drive them, either way it’s a waste but we condone the obsessive car buying.

I’m sure if purely for visual effects, a fake birkins would have sufficed, but I guess the entire point of their faux intellectual stunt is get attention by being controversial, which they did, and that definitely required a real bag
if this girl really wanted to proof a point about money being meaningless, she should give up her trust fund and Live with the african tribesmen

how do we all even know if that version of the bag is real? people are super gullible these days.

There is no point in destroying a $100k bag. That is just plain destruction and the only thing that resulted in this absurd supposed show of a statement are the remains of a once living animal’s skin and cloth. That is nothing useful for anyone. If they really intended to make a statement and not a show, then buy a bunch of those bags and start giving them to everyone, so they can either keep or sell them. That is one way to say that material goods are not important.
Celebrities are rich but they are certainly not known for intelligence

I like this, I like what she did. I think she’s trying to point out that we’re all far too materialistic. She’s emphasizing that it’s just a thing. It’s the people who seek it that make it worth so much, not the actual thing in question. it’s flammable just like everything else in this world… and it shouldn’t be so sought after.

The quote from
Donnie Darko
is actually, “Destruction is a form of creation.”

@In_the_Violet_Hour@xanga - I’m sure that most people don’t care about the bag but the fact that she could have done more meaningful things with that amount of money.

This bag means nothing to me, the money means nothing to me. The comments on burning of the bag only makes my assumptions that human beings are selfish creatures more validated. People want the money this bag represents- that’s what they see when they see that bag burning, not the fact that it’s just a bag- and that in itself disgusts me. Money is everything to people. And I highly doubt any one of them would actually donate the money; instead using it for themselves.
However, it’s not just the money issue. It’s the fact that people waste so much in their daily lives (and not just money) that they probably will end up wasting enough to equate or exceed a Hermes bag.

I LITERALLY do not understand how it a purse could sell for $100,000. I just can’t wrap my mind around it. 100,000…. for a purse. SMH

i saw her show once or twice & at first she had me thinking that she could be famous for her actions, & not just because of her dad. but now, she may as well just be another spoiled little brat of hollywood that pisses away money like water. disgusting. shoulda used a knockoff ..

@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - Makes more sense than what they did with it. Such a sad waste of the croc.

Whether the message was effective or not, or whether there was even a message at all, I think this girl just did this for fun. She’s a teenager. She’s extremely rich. And for that matter, she can do whatever her parents let her do with the money. Personally, I feel like buying a damn purse for $100,000 and using it for the intended purpose would be the same as catching $100,000 on fire.

the rich & poor divide
the rich can buy a 100K bag burns it up to make a “statement”, while the poor gets nothing seeing money goes to waste.

It’s funny, when people just BUY shit like that everyone’s like:”well it’s their good right to after all they WORK for their money”. When they buy it and transform it into something to ‘do good’ by making the world look, they are accused of being hypocritic. Just like vegetarians are accused of being hypocritic when wearing leather shoes. At least they do SOMETHING.
As for ‘being so deep’, that’s just an assumption. Probably people also think that I think I am ‘being so deep’ when I share some picture on facebook. But I just do it because I can and…just do.
Personally I do not at all think this message is old and tired. It’s one
of those many things that people cannot hear enough. The definition of ‘worth’ is very arbitrary and derives from low motives such as greed and elitism, and it’s beyond all common sense. Yet people even look down on those who make less money with more effort or look up to those who make a lot. Moreover, products are produced and thrown away again and again and nothing is sustainable. Imagine how nice the world could be.
I think in fact they could predict the reactions. Even I could predict it when I saw the picture on the front page. People are outraged and complain. But if they complain, they must also realize that they do the same often in a smaller frame, and that they support/tolerate an economic system/culture which features that without thinking. If they don’t, they are also being hypocrites.
I think that was their goal, along with some attention. Yeah, there are probably better ways , even to get attention. But that is just my personal guess. In the end what matters is focusing on what WE can do.
edit: I read more about it now, I might have overinterpreted the ‘artsiness’ of that idea. Still I stick by the rest I said.
