The national speed-reading champion averages about 4700 words per minute, and it’s long, long before that when my brain would just fritz and burn out on me. When I took this test on the Staples website, I found that I read comfortably about 332 words per minute, and I’m not a particularly fast reader. If you think you’re a fast reader, or if like me, you just wanted to know for the sake of curiosity, take the test below!
Here’s the test. Report back on your results in the comments so we at Lovelyish know to write FASTER. Just kidding. Also, my prior obsession was this typing test. I suck at it, also. There goes your afternoon! You’re welcome.
What were your results?

792 per minutes, at 2 am and drunk, yay

Wow at the scores above me – I don’t even know how that’s possible! I came in at 454 words per minute, but I’ve never considered myself a very fast reader so I guess it makes sense.
guest
…but how many sentences did that 4700/min. speed reader comprehend? he/she should also write a short summary in under 20 seconds. or else what’s the point of reading so fast if not much is understood and learned-_-
guest
I will take the test in a moment, but in eight grade I took a speed reading “class” or “workshop” or whatever, it basically sorted through kids to see if there were any speed readers and then we competed. I won. Speedreaders, even those who read at 4700 wpm. DO comprehend what they are reading. I can tell you from experience. Our brain understands the sentences as our eyes go over the words, without having to actually process the words first. That doesn’t make us any smarter, (believe me, I’m not that smart at all) but I sure can fly through the novels I read. I’ll update with my score in a minute… I’m at work and can’t get to it right now.

I read 1038 words per minute. fyi. so not technically a speedreader as per what that listing states, but pretty fast. It drives my boyfriend crazy.
guest
I read 420 words per minute… I thought I was slower actually.
And I really did pass the test… comprehension is everything.
guest
330 words a minute. Looking at the results people have posted, I feel inadequate. But I am 32% above the national average, so that’s not too bad lol
guest
LOl I am scared to try. I know I am incredibly slow.
guest
311 words per minute… I’m a pretty animated reader. My brain uses different tones and everything which probably takes more time than simply reading it straight through…
guest
742

I got 420 per minute. I’m really pleased with that since English is my third language and I’ve been working on my English reading speed since my school reading is all English or Swedish next year.
guest
@crazypassions@xanga - Haha, I go over 1000 words per minute in my first language too and have the same problem. My boyfriend gets so annoyed when we’re reading the same thing off a computer screen or something and I’m done when he’s not even half way through.
guest
527, I could probably read faster, but then the quality of the reading and my comprehension of it is going to deteriorate, and, quite frankly, I do not see the point in trying to read fast. I’d rather just read at a comfortable speed.
guest
364 words per minute
guest
458 words per minute.

im such a slow reader. 240 wpm. Its probobly cause i dont read much
guest
I’m a slow reader
daisy / 603 posts
Not a speed reader, but typed 87 words a minute!
guest
Jeez I’m slow haha i just got over 200
guest
315, apparently much slower than many of you, but above average and I always thought I’m a slow reader.
daffodil / 1607 posts
i took it twice 972 then 1018
but if i had anything lower i’d be failing my classes -.- 400 to 600 or more depending pages a night of reading not only melts my brain but wasn’t really somehting i had always thought possible or even tried until i took too many classes ><

273 words a minute..i fail
daisy / 505 posts
226 words per minute reading, AND had no clue wtf they were talking about haha…then I typed 72 words per minute…aha. I may not be very smart, but at least I’m a decent typist?
I’m working on my secretarial skills for the future (working at a call center while studying English in college. A prestigious waste of money.)
guest
615 and i passed the comprehension test.
guest
515 words, could probably do better if I wasn’t tired & hadn’t kept stumbling over them lol still 106% better than average, though. I used to read faster but now I like to take my time a little more.
guest
567, got all the questions correct. Cool.
sunflower / 297 posts
about 420 I think, and I got all the questions right. The world record is definitely set by someone with a photographic memory!
guest
1,702 WPM and yes, passed all the questions correctly. PS they report that speed readers read at 1500 WPM no where NEAR 4700
guest
358 words and 2/3 on the test part thing.
guest
1,856 wpm.
I taught myself how to speed read in middle school, it made standardized tests in high school a lot easier lol.http://www.spreeder.com/ really helps if you’re trying to train yourself to get better at it. Good luck!
guest
I got around your score, 350 the first time. (the second time 573, but that doesn’t count lol).
I’m okay with that though (: I love taking my time reading, role playing voices of each character in my head is 90% of the fun of reading.
Typing wise I got on average 95 wpm. My highest ever was 110
guest
638, got around 800 or so in another test though so I don’t know, could’ve had a slower day today or a great day before!
guest
i got 430 words per minute and i got all three questions right! that surprised me because i actually didn’t pay much attention but i did read it all
guest
490 in the reading (I thought I was a faster reader than that, could just be that test things always make me nervous, even if it means nothing lol!) and 109 words/minute in the typing!
guest
221 wpm. But I am aware I am a slow reader at my “natural pace” because I read at the speed I talk (plus I reread a lot). I can read faster when I have to and probably do when I’m really into a book.
Yeah, up to 345 when I was up to my “need to read faster” pace. I guess I’m a lazy reader, if anything.
@xllxo0o_0_Kara_0_o0oxllx@xanga - The 4700 wpm number is the average of the champion, not the average of your typical speed reader.
guest
Fun stuff! Good to know where I’m at before going to grad school in a month.
Looks like I’ll be needing to practice reading more to keep up in school…? (555 wpm) haha
guest
@P0RCELA1N_D0LL@xanga - I’m sure they test the readers for comprehension; otherwise how would they know who reads the fastest? It would be based on hearsay.
Thanks to my literature classes, I’ve discovered I can read fiction at 3-4000 wpm with a fair amount of retention, but it takes me a few minutes to get up to speed. If I’m reading for pleasure, I read at about 1500 wpm.
guest
@lisonok8@xanga - That website has a virus! Beware folks!
guest
@In_Anguish@xanga – No it doesn’t…
guest
@BunnyBliz@xanga - in what ways did the noun overcome the verbs?
no cheating. your answer must be within 5 seconds.
guest
457 but I normally skim when I read anyways.

reading: 377 words per minute
typing: 82 words per minute

805 words a minute and 2 out of 3

897 words per minute. tqvm

378 words per minute. I always thought I was a pretty fast reader, but when I look at the results some others have posted I feel pretty inadequate…

I took the test over multiple times and came about to 500 wpm.

404. 62% faster than the national average, but worse than average college students and way worse than high-scoring college students, which is depressing since i went to a really good college and graduated magna cum laude. i don’t really know why reading quickly is seen as a sign of intelligence, but maybe i’m just jealous. i answered the three questions correctly, though, so that’s all that matters to me. i guess it would be nice to read more quickly, though. maybe i’ll work on that.

Some of them are very
gimmicky and didn’t help me at all, like using my finger to ‘draw
shapes’ on the page to activate my brain’s visual cortex, or some
nonsense like that. What did help was the motto
“practice.”
