President Obama held a sure-to-be-historic interview with ABC News today, in which he announced his support for same-sex marriage.
Obama followed Biden’s recent approval of gay marriage in the interview, stating that:
I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.”
The announcement comes a day after North Carolina voted to pass a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
What’s your stance on gay marriage and/or marriage equality?

Uhhh… I’m not exactly sure that’s what Biden meant. It was clarified later by one of his staff members that he was “unsure” about gay marriage.
guest
North Carolina did not vote to ban gay marriage. They voted to keep the definition of marriage as it always has been.

It’s about time! That’s my view on it, to answer your question!
I wouldn’t say Obama followed Biden, I’m sure it was coordinated.
I’ve known that since Biden spoke, not sure why nobody else seemed to.
Of course they plan together.

Denying United States citizens basic rights is the most Un-American thing I’ve ever heard of. My religious agenda has nothing to do with the Constitution and civil rights; so why does everyone else feel it should be?
guest
That’s exactly what they did. As opposed to it just being a law, which is much easier to overturn, it’s now an Amendment. Much more difficult to get rid of. I personally don’t care what Obama had to say about it, the question is, what does he want to do about it? You can say you’re for or against something all you want, what actually counts is what you do about it. I personally would rather that everyone just take a step back and remove their religion from my government. It’s not supposed to be there in the first place. And before anyone goes off on a “laws are based on religious morality”, ‘eff that. Morals don’t come from religion. There are a lot of things in religion that help develop morals, but religion doesn’t tell me that stealing or murdering is wrong. My conscience does that just fine on it’s own, despite the fact that I’m agnostic.
I love America. I do. I love living here in this country. I love the fact that we have so many freedoms. However, I hate the fact that they’re being taken away from people. I hate the fact that people are using religion as an excuse to take away the freedoms we’ve fought so hard for. I don’t hate America or Americans. I hate what they do.

Everyone’s going to flip their shit. The gays will hump him, the extreme left will demand he pass it into law, the moderates will move to Canada, the extreme right will use this excuse more than ‘socialist,’ and the religious nut jobs will embrace Santorum (not in that way.)
But there are some who knew this all along and will simply shrug their shoulders.

there’s no question that i absolutely support it. religion needs to be kept out of a secular issue. my parents split up… it wasn’t because of gay people. if Christians want to preserve the sanctity of marriage, they should ban divorce.

Good for you Obama, I hope all gay people move to your state, lol VOTE for Ramney

so good to hear

Good! I hate this argument that gay marriage will “ruin the sanctity of marriage” – because cheating, 72 hour marriages, divorce and marrying money hasn’t done that already?!

I have never been more proud to back Obama. Good for him to speak out. It is unfortunate, however, that such a remark could cost him the election.
guest
That was actually Obama going, “Oh shit! November’s coming and everyone’s disappointed with me. Need to make a stand on something liberal…”
You know what though, I really don’t think that the Democrats want to allow same-sex marriage either. I really don’t. It’s in their interest to keep that fight going as long as possible.
Personally, I don’t think that the government should be involved in marriage at all. It’s just a source of revenue to them.

I find it astounding that some people think it’s their right to poke into the private life of two consenting adults. It is none of their business, and it won’t affect them in any way. I absolutely favor equality.
I’m glad that the President has spoken out in favor of equality. There are A LOT of bigots in this country, and it was kind of ballsy of him to do so at this time.
guest
Yep! I heard about it on MPR this morning. Very happy.

I’m all for equal rights for all people regardless of their sexual preferences. How hard can it be to understand? Obama is the best. I love him just as much as I detest his opponents… and that’s a lot!
guest
If you’re a decent human being you support equal rights for everyone. Not supporting others right to get married because of your own religion is like wanting to make cupcakes illegal because you’re on a diet.

You really can’t win with some people. Some people say he did this because he was pressured to. Others say if he waited till after the election it would’ve been too late. I applaud this man for doing something that could very well cost him the election. I don’t get where this “everyone’s disappointed with him” shit is coming from. I’m sure as hell not. He’s done more for LGBT citizens than any other president combined. He stopped government from defending the unconstitutional DOMA which makes it so even if you are in a state that allows same-sex marriage, businesses or organizations that give marriage benefits don’t have to acknowledge that marriage. He got rid of DADT. He’s made it so same-sex couples can see their partners in the hospital. He includes us in his speeches when he’s addressing Americans. He actually makes me feel like I matter which is something I can’t say for past presidents or any other candidate. Romney is a joke. Ron Paul is crazy and has already shown his bias with those racist and homophobic papers. Santorum is a theocrat who was the biggest threat to America if you ask me. Win or lose come november he will always be remembered as the first president to be on the right side of equality.

Smart man….knows how to gain votes to be re-elected…

@SquidVicious@xanga - Not sure there will be a net benefit. he may pick up some, but he’ll lose others.
guest
He did the right thing, they’re no reason people should love who they love and marry who they want. It’s been a great boost for his young supporters from what I’ve seen so far, a great surge.
guest
@hombre_de_la_mancha@xanga - True, but it’ll gain a whole community of voters either way.
I mean when he ran first, it was easy for him because all these different races were all about having the first president of another race.
Now he can play off one of the biggest cases of discrimination there is today.
The whole LGBT community will most likely now vote in his favor, plus his voters based on race, and then everyone else that chooses to vote for him.
He’s put himself in a pretty good spot in my opinion.
But really I’ll think it’s sad if based on only those two things, he is elected.
There is more to running a whole country then just being a non traditional race for the president of the U.S.A. and supporting the Gay community. Really, that has nothing to do with running a country. That is just one issue that needs to be taken care of (in my opinion they should be able to be married, it doesn’t hurt anyone). But by NO means are those grounds to be elected. They’re just mind games to blind people to the real basis of election. But either way, smart move that man’s playing. Smart move.

Actually, when Prop 8 was being passed in CA, a lot of Black ministers spoke out for it, and support marriage as being 1 man, 1 woman. Plus there are conservative Hispanics that will disagree based on their faith. So it will be interesting to see what happens.
guest
Yes…YES!!! Love is love. You matter what race or gender.

I’m a christian. I see it as a sin but I think that if gay people want to get married they should! Just because I’m a christian doesn’t mean I can stop what others do. I’m honestly annoyed that this is such an issue, especially with christians because no sin is a “higher” sin.
guest
Marriage is to be kept holy. it is a union between man and woman through the eyes of God, therefore why should homosexuals be able to marry? Homosexuality is a sin, and there are consequences for sin. Not being able to marry should be a consequence. If you are going to be homosexual, why should you have the privilege to partake in something that is meant to be kept holy??? Marriage is to be kept sacerd and homosexuals should NOT be allowed this right.

Imagine everybody was at church, worshipping and praying. Say a drunk came in, that drunk should NOT be able to enter the Church drunk like that. Same with marriage, it is SACRED and should NOT Be taken lightly

This has become a meaningless issue.
Redarding my opinion towards same sex marriage: I say let ‘em! They feel the need to make the world aknowledge their relationship as a legitimate one, they also have a right because their human beings, not aliens or monsters. This is a no-brainer, there is nothing legit that states that a marriage should be between a man and a woman exclusively. Our moralities and sometimes even religion, are what define if this issue is good or bad. I may not agree with it, but I’m not going to tell people how they should live their lives!
As for my next opinion, I say that this has become a meaningless issue because this isn’t really something to be arguing and worrying about, in fact, this is the least of what we should be really worrying about.
What we should be worrying about is those other human beings that need help but don’t get it. Men, women and children that go to sleep at night hungry. Families whose parents don’t get along, child abandonement, divorces, domestic violence, heart breaks, etc. We should also worry about the people who are racist. I can’t believe that in this day and age there are people who have the gall to discriminate all because of the color of their skin! We should be worrying about the people that have addictions to unhealthy lifestyles that could kill them in the end. We should worry about the human beings who think that they’re not beautiful because of the way they look! We should worry about the kids that think they’re hated by the world.
Let’s worry and do something about the people who need our help in anyway or form. Let’s worry about things that actually make a difference in our society please!

@carlie616@xanga - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage
With all due respect, there is nowhere in the bible that says specifically that marriage should only for man and woman (Adam and Eve didn’t have a wedding ceremony, just to let you know.). Even in the Torah, it doesn’t specify that marriage is for man and woman, it just says that it’s a “good idea” for marriage to be between a man and a woman. G-d created everyone with free will, meaning that everyone has the freedom to do what they please, whether it’d be good or bad, that’s where the bible comes in. The bible teaches on what you could do, but in the end, G-d created us with free will for a reason, right? We have the freedom of choice! We can either choose to do good or bad depending on our religious and spiritual moralities.
Marriage is something created by humans in the society of humans. It’s just an official thing. Not a religious thing. In our past, marriage then turned into a religious thing as well as a society thing. But, again, just to let you know, when Adam and Eve paired up, marriage didn’t even exist!
Now, you and I may not agree with this, but we do not have the right to judge nor to tell how others should live their lives according to our moral and religious views.

Ugh there are so many bigots on xanga it actually pains me to read through the comments most of the time. Why the hell should anyone be kept from marrying anyone? You can marry your first cousin in my state, but not the same sex. So ridiculous. They would probably let you marry your sibling before they let you marry the same sex.
