Every year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City hosts the Met Costume Institute Gala. It’s an occasion for celebrities and artists alike to don their most theatrical couture, and this year, the stars did not disappoint. The gowns are almost without exception stunningly beautiful, and every photo is worth a long look. Some went the old Hollywood route, while others went full-on costume. Take a look at some of my picks for best and wildest, and browse the gallery for a look at all the gorgeous gowns!

Beyoncé is no stranger to stealing the show, and this sheer and feathered gown says it all without a word. The new mother continues to blow our minds.

There are only a handful of gals in Hollywood who could pull off this look, and Emma Stone is absolutely darling in it. I appreciate her untanned skin and glowing makeup. She’s letting the dress speak for itself without letting it upstage her beauty.

Never to be outdone, Florence Welch heard “costume” loud and clear. And can we blame her? If you’re going to go avant garde, sometimes the only way to go is full tilt. I think she handled this well, knowing her style.

While I don’t hate this look on Sarah Jessica Parker, she’s sort of a legendary New Yorker. This dress feels like a missed opportunity to me.

Finally, Elizabeth Banks‘ couture tastes have found the right backdrop. I feel she overdresses at most events because she loves unique designer gowns, but this look is totally on point for the Met Gala. It gets a 10 from me.
