It’s not often that fashion and politics are uttered in the same breath. I mean, Michelle Obama is known for getting on our level with her J. Crew office ensembles and multiple wearings of certain garments (we can’t all afford J. Crew head-to-toe but at least she’s trying), but for years before that, we hardly noticed what a FLOTUS was wearing. Well, you also don’t have to be an avid newsreader to know that Governor Mitt Romney is a very rich man. And his wife Ann, who claims to be “poor in spirit” and who “doesn’t even consider herself wealthy” wore a $990 t-shirt by designer Reed Krakoff on Coffee With The Nation this week. In a word, wow.
I mean, it must be nice. I have to think hard just how rich I would need to be to not bat an eye at a $990 t-shirt purchase. Let’s see, I don’t really fret over a garment I like for $9.90. So that would mean I’d have to make about 100 times more than I do now to not feel the pinch. Well, it’s reported that Mitt Romney makes about $60,000 a day, so… there’s that. I don’t really know what else to say about this.
No further comment. I just thought I’d leave this here. [source]
What’s the most you’d pay for a tee-shirt?

I don’t care what she wears to be honest. They can spend their money however they want to spend it. I think I would roll my eyes more if she suddenly decided to start wearing cheaper brands to better identify with “the people”. I do however think she should consider how she comes off when she says things like she doesn’t consider herself wealthy or “I am poor in spirit” (I am not even going to make fun of that one). It sounds pretentious. I have more respect for people who say they don’t know what it is like to be poor, struggle, or really worry about money because it is most likely the truth. She knows how wealthy she is. I am not saying she should brag, but she shouldn’t pretend to be something she is not. Some politicians overestimate the need for people in the US to identify with their politicians. When it comes down to it, I care more about what they are going to do for the country than the fact that they or their spouses shop at Target just like me.

@Erika_Steele@xanga - Exactly.

Where’s the Lovelyish post about the millions spent by the First Family to send one of the daughters to Mexico on spring break with her friends. At least Ann Romney spent her OWN money to buy that shirt…

I’m just disgusted that anyone’s trying to sell a shirt for $990…

You always have to love when people start talking about Republicans. All of a sudden everything is a big deal. No one ever mentions the costs of Michelle Obama’s clothing. She wore a dress by Barbara Tfank a few months ago. It costs $2400. She’s worn shoes to volunteer in a food bank that costs $540. It’s interesting that no one ever captions things about the Obama’s regarding how much money they spent. Anyways, I don’t care how much money either of them is spending. People spend their money differently. I care more about if they’re going to help the country. I mean anyone can spend money on clothes.

I’ve heard criticism about the way Obama’s family spends money, just not on Lovelyish. I don’t care either way.

I don’t base my vote on the clothing the family wears…ugly or stylish, cheap or expensive. I feel if she were a democrat she’d be praised for her ‘sense of style.’

I don’t even like paying $10 for a Tshirt…i buy clothes on sale or clearance
guest
am i the only one who thinks the shirt is ugly as sin? it reminds me of those tye dye wolf tshirts i used to see at the flea market in the 90s. dear lord.
guest
The shirt is really ugly, but I don’t see why we can criticize her spending. Yes it’s ridiculous, but more politicians are well off people to begin with, and it’s not like they embezzle money to pay for it. Of course it’s still a sad sad fact that the people they are supposed to help and represent can’t even make rent, but I mean at the end of the day it’s their own money. It’s not really role of politicians to save money and donate it. In the same way, celebrities are like a hundred times richer and donate lots of money, but they still drop 100 grand on earrings or a bag just as easily.

@betsymarie – That’s not the case at all.. The reason why Lovelyish posted this (although I find it kind of pointless) is because of all the things Mitt Romney has said about women and the working environment.. I think people praise Michelle Obama for her sense of style (I do. I think she’s one of the better dressing First Ladies since Jacqueline Kennedy) is because she owns the title as “FIrst Lady”. Regardless, people will hate on Mrs. Obama if she continues to dress the way she dresses right now or if she decides to dress like slob. It’s politics. No one will ever have a open opinion about anybody IN politics. That’s the fact.
HOWever, @Erika_Steele@xanga, I agree wholeheartedly with what you said.

Politicians can never win. If they wear cheap clothes, they’ll be criticised for trying to “relate to the 99%” and if they wear expensive stuff, they get criticised for spending too much money.

is that a bird? a fish? i really can’t tell. it’s an ugly-ass shirt regardless.

If she wants to claim such things, she should take that money and try to live off of it for one month; because you know that’s about as much as a full-time worker on minimum wage gets every month.
Affectations only get you so far.

What a total, flat-out lie. Politics and fashion ALWAYS go hand-in-hand and a publication like Lovelyish knows it. From power ties to Jackie Kennedy’s sunglasses to making fun of Sarah Palin’s windbreakers to worshiping Michelle Obama’s frumpy outfits and ridiculing Hilary’s power suits- the general public is obsessed with what politicians and their wives wear.
Anyway, rich people really DON’T “feel rich”. They feel like themselves. Kind of amazing, how people who have money still look, feel, smell, and think of themselves as still being people. Assholes, right?
@grim_truth@xanga - For some reason, people think the Obamas aren’t in the “1%”. It amazes me, how nobody seems to get that to even launch a campaign, you have to be wealthy- and the person who spends the most usually wins.
guest
What a waste of money! That shirt is atrocious. Her money would have been better spent buying a nice 20 dollar blouse and giving the rest of that money to charity since she can sling it around so easily. What a moron.
guest
If she was going to spend that much on a t-shirt you’d think she could at least find one that isn’t buttfucking ugly. I will never understand rich people, I just won’t, because I have never been in such a position. I have absolutely no idea what it would be like to have SO MUCH fucking money that you would spend more than what I pay for rent and groceries in one month on a t-shirt. I cannot fathom what sort of brain process would cause someone to make what I view as an incredibly stupid decision.
However, I would appreciate it if those same rich people would not pretend that they understand what it’s like to be me or any other normal “poor” person, because it’s fucking insulting. Don’t lie and say you’re poor at heart or some other bullshit just to “relate” to the public. Tell it like it is: you’re rich and you know it. You buy yourself lots of nice expensive treats. It’s obvious. Don’t treat us like we’re poor and also complete idiots.
guest
@hot_metalhead@xanga - Being rich is exactly like being poor, as far as how you feel and think. You’re both people. I don’t get what she meant by the “poor at heart” thing, but no matter how much money you have, you still are a human being on the inside. And you can still have bad taste in clothes. If you need help relating, just think of the next level of people poorer than you. Probably, you think nothing of having a shower at least a few times a week, maybe every day. Someone much more poor than you would view that as an incredibly stupid decision- wasting all that water for cleaning yourself when you could be drinking it. That doesn’t mean you should feel guilty for your shower. On the contrary, you should enjoy luxuries when you can afford them.
Anyway, a lot of rich people do understand what it’s like to be a normal “poor” person, because they started out that way.
guest
well when you have so much money to spend, you run out of things to buy (probably. i’m not rich) and you just say fuck it and buy whatever. i think shirts being over $30 is ridiculous in the first place though. there’s just no reason for clothes to be that much.

@grim_truth@xanga - And I’m sure we didn’t pay a PENNY for the bush vacatfions…MAN…they took a lot of them. Guess the secret servicxe didn’t supply security for the Bush Wedding either…You are os selective in your facts…why didn’t the money bother you when BUSH was spending it?
guest
@galadrial@xanga - It indeed DID bother me. I don’t understand the hate for Ann Romney, because she used her OWN money to buy that shirt (ar at the least campaign funds, which were voluntarily donated). But I suppose the young Ms Bush shouldn’t have gotten married just because her daddy was president? But if you’re going to talk about selective, aren’t you doing the same by ignoring the lavish vacations of the current president, who sends his wife with 20 friends to Spain on vacation, his daughter on a Mexican vacation with 12 friends, takes seperate jets to his Massachussettes vacation with his family to the home that cost $50,000 a WEEK to rent, all the while claiming to understand the plight of the common man.
The Romneys (and I’m no fan of them) may have bad taste in clothes, and a misunderstanding of finances when spending $1,000 on a friggin shirt… but at least they do it on their own dime.
Not to mention, Bush is not out there campaigning currently to be reelected like Obama is.
It’s nice to know you’re so close minded that you would think I’m such a partisan. Bush never got a vote from me, and neither will Romney, nor Obama.
guest
@blowingmoney@xanga - I think clothes like that are some folk’s version of art. I don’t see the point in spending thousands on a nice painting when I can go to the flea market and find one just as nice and probably done in better taste for about $20 at the local flea market.
guest
You know what would be fashionable? Buying a $20 T-shirt and donating the rest to a homeless shelter.
guest
While I think its pretty superficial to buy a 1000 dollar shirt (and not the smartest move either in this particular situation)…I don’t think its a huge deal. I think her response was more telling than anything else though. The “I don’t even consider myself wealthy” statement is more indicative that she is out of touch with reality than that 1000 dollar shirt designed by a peacock farmer on meth. Ask a recent lotto winner if he/she “feels rich”. (The answer is..yes…yes they do.) However, some people have been rich for so long, that they are now accustomed to a lavish reality that is unlike almost anyone else’s. A life where spending a grand on only a shirt seems “normal”. I think the Romneys would be better served by not trying to relate to the average person (which is absurd) and just focus on the issues.
And as far as the “poor in spirit” comment….I totally understand what she is saying here. After all, I am a vegetarian…in spirit. I volunteer 5 days a week at homeless shelters…in spirit. And I am also really really ridiculously good looking…in spirit.
guest
I wouldn’t pay more than $20 for a shirt.
guest
You end with saying you don’t know what ELSE to say, but as I read, and re-read, I’m trying to figure out if you actually said anything to begin with?
What’s your point? She has more money than you? She wore a shirt that was expensive?
Who gives a crap? They earned their money, and they can spend it however the heck they want to. Quick economics lesson… spending money you’ve earned creates and sustains jobs. Creating and sustaining jobs allows those people to spend money. Those people spend money, which creates and sustains jobs.
When did we start hating rich people in this country? All they’ve done is be smart with their money, and succeed at their chosen professions.

The idea of “poor in spirit” and not considering herself wealthy are hugely offensive to me, as was the whole charade when they made it seem like she had it tough as a stay at home mother with help. It’s insulting to people who are actually poor, who would love to be able to afford to stay home with their kids. Gah, they drive me insane. And that shirt is hideous. Money can’t but taste I guess.
guest
As I told my husband, when I saw all the controversy over this, it’s THEIR money. They can spend it however they damn well please and the rest of the morons in the country, who think it’s a big deal, need to grow up and stop being such babies.
guest
Yeah, some people rage about rich people, but I bet they’d like to be one!

@Cho_0705@xanga - It is pretty ugly, LOL. Why she buy that?? Look like sh*t!
