I mean, “best” is a tough word to define. What makes a good Kentucky Derby hat? Is it just big-ness? Or are there more points to be gained in feathers, bright colors, or avant garde style? Well, we’ve got some of our favorites that you can judge for yourself, after the jump!
You can’t help but smile (maybe even laugh a little) at these garish chapeaus. It’s a tradition ladies (and gents!) in attendance don’t take lightly, as many of these hats are custom made and likely cost a pretty penny. They might be silly, but they’re sure fun to look at! A lot of those hats are over the top. I guess wearing those bold hats would make quite the statement at the Kentucky Derby. I’m not much of a hat person. However, if I had to choose a hat, I would go for the black sun hat with the white band; the kind you’d likely wear to the beach. It looks chic and it’s the most wearable out of all the hats presented here.

I am not sure what I would wear if I went. Since the point is to look over the top and ridiculous, I would want to make sure I matched my mint julep.

Trust me, I go every year. The more ridiculous the hat, the better. Because everyone is too drunk to notice a boring hat. =]

The hats are interesting, though I wonder what compelled the designer, to create things like these. Is it just for attention or to remove attention from something else. Or is it to make something that is necessary more appealing and what is the inspiration, if any relation to the wearer. I would wear one to support a designer, if I liked it.

I went to the Derby; I saw crazy hats for sure, but I guess on our side (near corner of the track past the finish), I saw mostly really cute hats. I wish I had gotten pictures of them, lol. Mine was very conservative, I guess. I wore a tan-colored one with a black ribbon/flower around it.
