Plenty of people (myself included, at times) whine and pine for the stylish days of the 50s and 60s, when women wore dresses for every outing and men had abundant tie collections. But while some nostalgia is fine and good, we sometimes forget the darker, more sexist (and racist!) tones of the time. Case in point: these vintage ads. Check out more absurd signs of bygone times after the cut!
It’s hard to believe that people created and magazines ran these ads without a second thought. Can you imagine the backlash if any of these were published today?

Some day our kids are going to be making blogs like this about our generation.

OMG, what about that new Dr. Pepper add, right?! I don’t know if its being factious or not… and trust me, I can have a sense of humor about sexism at times. But that commercial makes me never want to buy Dr. Pepper again.

@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - They sure are.

Ads are still sexist today, it’s just less obvious.

“Women are soft and gentle, but they hit things.” Hahaha… so ridiculous and yet hilarious.

this is just down right WOMEN BASHING, MEN SUPERIOR BULLSHIT! sorry, i couldnt even go thru all of them, my blood boiled.
The women who are sexy as ever in these ads are being shitted upon … silly men, if men only understood the world wouldnt operate WITHOUT US WOMEN.
the cigareete ad;s got me .. making it seem like women who smoke are more ” easier to seduce.. or get into bed”.. that is SOOOOO NOT THE CASE unless those cigarettes had some sort of relaxing effect.

While reading this, my wife asked me to open not one, but two jars. I couldn’t take it, I burst out laughing. She doesn’t look happy.

@XxQuT3nShYxXBX@xanga - No offense, but I’m pretty sure we’re supposed to make fun of these, not get angry about them…

Spanking = sexist?
It wasn’t uncommon “back in the day” for a husband to spank his wife as a form of discipline.
And in “todays” world there is a whole culture around it. search: Taken In Hand.

I see most of these as tongue-in-cheek. A couple of them were mildly disturbing. By the way, I always ask my dad to open things for me.

i don’t know about you, but i can think of nothing more romantic than a man blowing smoke in my face.

There’s a reason why I can never talk to old fashioned guys…

I don’t consider it sexism. I consider it whiny modernism.

@HopeWithinReach@xanga - How do you not consider spanking your wife sexist? If the male can spank the wife but the wife can’t spank the husband the its obviously sexist.. It doesn’t matter is there is a culture around it, there are cultures where women aren’t allowed to make noises while they walk in the street, that doesn’t make it not sexist.
You make no sense.
