If any of you attended Coachella this year, you might’ve borne witness to the latest manifestation of all things wrong with technology: A performance from a hologram of Tupac Shakur. Sorry, am I the only one who is totally weirded out by this?
The performance was apparently a big hit at Coachella, as virtual-Tupac performed alongside Snoop Dogg on stage. This project is the brain child of Snoop, Dr. Dre and a company called Digital Domain, who created the technology. The rappers are thinking big, talking about both an arena-style tour and a smaller, more intimate club tour. While I’m sure there are a lot of fans who really really miss Tupac since his untimely death in 1996, I can’t put my finger on whether they’d be happy to see him in concert again, or completely infuriated that someone would think to resurrect him as a digital projection. PS: You can read the hologram’s innermost thoughts on its Twitter(?).
What do you think of a digital recreation of Tupac going on tour?

i get that there are people who really miss him but come on, i think they should just let him rest in peace.

That’s the beauty and curse of an untimely death. And there’s still a conspiracy theory going on that 2Pac is still alive… which I can see. There are people who still want to see him alive and there are others who want him to rest in peace. I don’t think Snoop and Dr. Dre did this out of evil intention. I think if they go on with the hologram concerts, I think it’ll be a big hit. 2Pac’s undoubtedly one of the best emcees that ever hit this world.

no….just no.

See, I don’t find this so weird. A lot of people loved Tupac, he was a HUGE influence for loads of musical artists and if they want to “bring him back” to perform, so what?

it’s not really a hologram, if you watch the video carefully you can see that its a projection onto a screen that’s somewhat see-through giving that illusion. holograms are supposed to appear in the air by itself. i still thought this was pretty cool though

His mom loved it, so how can we judge? I thought it was pretty amazing myself.

I don’t like the idea of them making a Hologram Tupac tour. It would cheapen the whole thing. Right now, a lot of people are amazed and intrigued by the technology and the execution of it, but if it becomes this traveling spectacle you can pay to see, everyone who was once amazed would get bored and think, “Oh, it’s just that CGI Tupac again, being projected onto a stage and pretending to perform live. Come talk to me when you have an actual, touchable CGI Tupac that genuinely interacts with the crowd, says entire paragraphs that wouldn’t have made sense in his lifetime, is possessed by the actual eternal soul of Tupac extracted from ghetto heaven by renegade priests, and ends his performance yelling ‘THIS IS SPARTA’ with a shoop da whoop before exploding into tiny golden angels and glitter.”
I think it would be more elegant to just let it be a one-time thing, rather than give it to people in bulk and let the snarky, unentertainable masses take ownership of it. I like how a lot of those people are actually shutting up right now and allowing themselves to suspend disbelief because it’s just that awesome to imagine it being real.

are you just bored and looking for something to be pissed at? you need to elaborate more on why this is so “completely infuriating.”

It was AMAZING! Seeing those two together again made me feel like… made me feel like my heart grew a couple of times before shrinking back down to its previous size. I cried. I watch it and STILL cry. It’s beautiful. Tupac was and IS a beautiful person. He’s bought so much light into my world and to see him up there, dancing and rapping along with Snoop again… it was just wonderful.
