If you watched ‘Kourtney and Kim Take New York’ at all, you know that Kourtney Kardashian is kind of a crunchy momma! Breast feeding Mason for nearly 15 months, making her own organic baby food, only letting him play with natural toys… she’s almost over protective!
Well as you may know, Kourtney is preggers again. However, I am a little confused as to why such a clearly health-conscious woman might dye her hair while knocked up.
To be fair, I am babyless, so I can’t honestly understand how a woman may feel about her appearance while pregnant. But I have been a hairstylist for nearly 6 years and would never color a pregnant woman’s hair. This is so shocking to me, not only because it can be pretty harmful to take such a risk, but because she hasn’t colored her hair in something like 10 years! Why would she start now? She couldn’t wait a few months?
Her hair was so beautiful, I just don’t understand this logic! Ladies, there are tons of ways to change up your look without harmful chemicals. There so many temporary and/or natural hair color options out there; just be smart about it. The worst part is, it really doesn’t even look that good. It looks like they did slightly off-the -scalp highlights, and toned it a very odd color.
Not attractive, girl! What were you thinking?! If you are going to take this risk, and you have Kardashian money, you better make sure you’re getting quality highlights. Real talk. Kourtney, I am disappointed.
What do you all think about Kourtney dying/highlighting her beautiful dark locks? Would you color your hair while pregnant?

Supposedly after the first trimester, it’s fine. Plus there are plenty of non-toxic dyes that can be used. People get up in arms over things. There are worse things to do while pregnant.
guest
So what? My doctor, as I am sure her doctor, told her that it is fine to dye your hair if you can stand the smell. You can dye your hair, perm your hair, wax your vagina, etc. etc. while you are pregnant and its not going to harm your child. Seriously, do people really think that the “toxins” are going to soak through your skin, scalp, nails etc, flow through your bloodstream, cross the placenta and deform or kill your fetus. If the chemicals in a product were so dangerous they would harm a fetus at low levels, I wouldn’t even use them on myself. I used to want to stab people who tried to make decisions for me when I was pregnant.

I think her new hair looks pretty.
guest
I’m more concerned with people saying the word “preggers.”

If you don’t know the whole story, don’t be so quick to judge. I agree with @Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga.

her hair looks fine. I think you’re being a snob. There’s all kinds of dyes safe for pregnant women to use. I thought you would know that since you’ve been a stylist for almost 6 years but I guess not!
guest
Having been pregnant and dying my hair during the time, I can tell you my doctor said it was safe. As long as you are in a large, well-ventilated area. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite things to do while pregnant because it is one thing that I have complete control over. When my entire body is changing in crazy ways and I can’t do anything about it, changing my hair color almost feels liberating, like it’s still my body and not just a baby-making machine.
guest
It is safe to dye your hair during pregnancy – I did my research during my pregnancy, checked with my nurse and ob-gyn and they said it was perfectly safe. I dyed my hair at least twice during my pregnancy and my baby was not harmed at all.
And personally, I think her hair looks good.
guest
LOLWUT?!

So…you’re not supposed to dye your hair while pregnant? This is news to me. One more reason not to have babies in the near future. I think her hair looks really good, actually (but then mine’s been pink, purple, blue, black, blonde, red, and brown so maybe my opinion is a bit tolerant). If my doctor said it was OK (and it looks like a lot of other commenters can attest to that), I’d go home and do it that same day. I think a lot of people get their panties in a really big wad over the most ridiculous things where pregnancy and babies are concerned. I highly doubt her kid is going to pop out with an extra finger or a learning disorder as a result of getting some highlights.

@Saridactyl@xanga - You haven’t watched enough Chris Hansen then.
guest
@hot_metalhead@xanga - This was actually a big myth in the 80s that dying your hair while pregnant could mess up your baby.
guest
@Erika_Steele@xanga - Haha, I would really like to see some woman attempt to wax her vagina while pregnant. That should be an olympic sport.
guest
Hey, stupid, dying your hair while pregnant DOES NOT AFFECT YOUR SPAWN.
guest
@hot_metalhead@xanga - No, you can, people are just fucking stupid.
guest
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - lol. That would be entertaining.
guest
Are you afraid of the word pregnant?
Preggers? Knocked up? She’s pregnant. PREGNANT. She has a fucking fetus inside her goddamn uterus. She’s pregnant. Knocked up? You’re like defiling her character.
guest
i want the last three minutes of my life back.
guest
First of all, I know a lot of people said it already, but preggers? Really? Secondly, you need to do your research. Dying your hair while pregnant is no big deal. Thirdly, why are you being so judgemental and snitty? I don’t really care for the Kardashians, and yet the way you talked made me feel the need to defend one of them. Wow.
guest
Woo, another article from Lovelyish that is based on zero fact and is just another reason to bash people.
guest
its highlights, and she is passed the first trimester. it’s fine.
guest
I didn’t even know she was pregnant, not to mention I could care less what she does while being that way…..

Dying your hair while pregnant can be harmful. Any hair color with ammonia is somewhat harmful to breathe even if you’re not pregnant. I’m not saying that if you do it you are gonna have flipper babies or something. It is a risk for the same reason you shouldn’t change a cats liter box while pregnant, ammonia is a dangerous chemical. It’s not super common but breathing ammonia while pregnant can cause things such as low birth weight. Not to mention its harmful to breathe anything that reduces oxygen to the brain because it can cause damage to the fetus.if you’ve spoken to a doctor and they give you the ok, no worries… Just be aware of what is in your dye.

@katiekubiak - Unless you’re breathing ammonia often, the risk in dying your hair once isn’t big.
Also, it’s not like she was smoking or drinking. OP is being a snob.

@MoonFaeEyryan@xanga -yeah there are much worse things you can do. Being the type of mother she appears to be and then dying her hair after not doing it for 10 years is whats weird. She seems to go out of her way to to keep Mason safe from harmful additives and chemicals, yet does this. hmmmmm…confusing. People are acting like I said “dying your hair will in fact 100% screw up your baby.” I just said its a risk, and it is. Typically, people who dye their hair dont do it just once over a 9 month period. Think about how long your roots would get!!!

@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - I have a friend who does waxing. She did a Brazilian on a woman just post pregnancy. So apparently you have kind of a rough time with muscle control after giving birth and she peed all over my friend while getting waxed.
guest
@katiekubiak - there’s nothing wrong with it, especially after your second trimester, and there are plenty of dyes these days that don’t contain all these “dangerous” chemicals. The main risk is that because of hormones, the colour will take differently, but there’s no real evidence that it damages your unborn baby in the slightest.

Don’t say preggers ever again!

Lot’s of hate going on
guest
perhaps it was non-toxic hair color?
daisy / 598 posts
I had no idea that this was a no-no during pregnancy. If I were pregnant I’d probably google before I do anything just because I’m paranoid lol.
guest
The dye could totally be organic. I am no expert, but I’m saying it is a possibility.
guest
It actually stated in the original story that she consulted a doctor and used non toxic dye…so not really an issue. Sounds like you’re just wanting ot be judgemental.
guest
Oh well, it’s her life.
guest
i actually think her hair looks really nice. it’s a good change.
guest
@Nichole Bufton French@facebook - I would like to know how it’s so impossible for a pregnant woman to make a good hair-change decision? That statement was really inflammatory and it insinuates that a pregnant woman is out of control of her brain and is incapable of making wise choices. Big thumbs down.
Was coloring her hair an absolute necessity? No. But basically? So what. You can’t prove that being in a room with a television, electricity, or cell phones won’t harm a developing baby either. That doesn’t mean you go crazy trying to avoid anything that *might* be, in whatever dose, harmful.
guest
@katiekubiak - I thought this was a really informative site on this subject. And it seems that ammonia is not the harmful culprit here, it appears to be paraphenykenediamine. http://www.babycenter.com/404_is-it-safe-to-color-my-hair-during-pregnancy_3273.bc
And since Kourtney appears to have done off-the-scalp highlights, that would even reduce whatever slight risk there was to begin with – right? It seems to me that she did this in the safest way possible, and that there is virtually no risk to herself or her baby.
guest
@katiekubiak - You can’t change a cat litter box because of Toxoplasmosis…
I’m pregnant and my doctor told me it was safe to dye my hair but most women wait until after the first trimester…which she did. As you pointed out, she does have the “Kardashion money” so I’m sure she used organic hair dye or something safer than the shit that comes out of a box. How can you be disappointed when you don’t know exactly what she used??
guest
@Erika_Steele@xanga - I’m only eight weeks along and I’m already tired of hearing people’s shit. Everyone is an expert.
guest
@Still_Bruhaha@xanga - I cursed this chick out once b/c she wouldn’t put blue cheese on my salad. Then her manager told her the same thing I did without the curse words….then the waitresses who would bring me a well done steak when I ordered rare, I wanted to throw the plate at them but I was always too hungry and ate it anyway.

2 things annoy me about this article: 1)It talks about a Kardashian and I’m so sick of hearing about those people, 2)it has the word “preggers” in the title. Ugh, I will NEVER say that when I’m pregnant.
rose / 960 posts
@FallenSafely@xanga - what character? (i agree with you though)
i like her hair. it could be shinier. and like half the females in my family dyed their hair while they were pregnant and we’re all pretty much fine. they did it basically for the reasons @Kimis2cute@xanga did it.
guest
This was her original statement, which lovelyish coincidentally omitted:
”I highlighted my hair (which is considered the safest form of hair colour while pregnant) and NOT to the root, so nothing ever touched my scalp. I also used products that did not contain any ammonia. It is also recommended to be in a well-ventilated area as well as being at least in your second trimester, and I followed both of those rules. Anyone who knows anything about me knows that I take caution in all the products I use all the time, but especially when pregnant.”
I’m not a Kardashian fan, but I’m not a fan either of the media making celebs to be The Bad Guy when there’s obviously another side of the story.

any type of chemicals a person uses, whether it’s perfumes lotions makeup whatever is soaked in by the largest organ, the skin. so yes, the mercury and lead found in many cosmetics products can be found in the body and bloodstream, and there has been plenty of research to show that the offspring, compared to mothers who used less harfmul products that didn’t contain the metals and syntehtic materials, carried more of the toxins in their bloodstream
i’m not sure about whether or not dying your hair right whne you’re pregnant really affects it so immediately, it’s more of a lifestyle thing, the whole choosing the right products throughout the course of your life. never really looked in to that ha
but yes, hair dyes etc do affect what’s on the inside
guest
I’d say something about how it’ll damage the kid’s IQ, but, y’know, anyone with Kardashian DNA is dead in the water anyway.
guest
Is it really harmful to dye your hair while pregnant?? I was not aware of this!! Thank goodness I don’t have kids X-D

@katiekubiak - Just to clarify, changing cat litter is not dangerous because of ammonia. It’s dangerous because the mother could contract an infection called toxoplasmosis, which usually results in just mild flu symptoms for the mother but can have really devastating effects on a developing fetus.
guest
I didn’t dye my hair when I was pregnant but that was mostly because I was too tired & lazy to care. I’d care if she was smoking but this is not a big deal. If she’s that conscientious about everything else I am absolutely certain that she got the okay from her ob/gyn
guest
@Erika_Steele@xanga - I should’ve waxed my vagina when I was pregnant. It would’ve saved me the trouble of having it shaved by the nurses for my c-section. lol
guest
@katiekubiak - 1) It’s perfectly safe to dye your hair while pregnant. Quit listening to old wives’ tales and think for yourself sometime. Most hair dyes don’t contain ammonia, either. Take a look at Garnier, for example. And that’s just one off the shelf of hundreds.
2) She’s PREGNANT, not “preggers” or whatever the fuck you called it. Jesus fucking Christ, it’s no wonder the world thinks America is full of idiots when it’s citizens use words like “preggers.”
3) And why do you even give two fucks about what she does to HER OWN HAIR, anyway? Does it affect your life? Do you have to sit down with her personally and stare at it all day? No? Then get off the high horse. What that woman does with her hair is of no more concern to anyone else as what you do to yours.
4) And ammonia also isn’t why pregnant women shouldn’t change litter boxes. It’s toxoplasmosis. I’d say “do your homework before posting dumb shit,” but Lovelyish is infamous for featuring idiotic celebrity-driven word vomit.

This reads like it was written by a 16 year-old. Not an adult.

If this were true about hair die just think of how many hairstylists would have to take 9 months off from work
I had not heard the word preggers in many years in the 60′s and 70′s you heard it a lot in Jr high and High school
guest
Hairdye does not affect the baby. The only real problem it poses is sometimes because of the hormones in the body, the color won’t take, or it will only take in some areas. That’s the risk you face in coloring hair while pregnant.

When I was pregnant in ’85 my hairdresser would not color or perm my hair so I colored it myself. First time in the pool it turned green, just in time for my class reunion!!!!! Just saying.!

@KatieK - Actually the kitty litter issues is NOT ammonia, it’s the risk of Toxoplasmosis, a parasitic infection spread through cat poop.
