As we all know, the Internet places vast amounts of information at our fingertips. It’s almost impossible to go online without learning something new, and possibly even beneficial. So how in the world did these 10 people not know that Titanic was based on an actual event? Read some truly head-scratching Tweets after the cut!
Is it really so difficult to have never heard about a historical event that famous and tragic? I would be curious to see how many people are unaware that Pearl Harbor or Schindler’s List were based on true stories. After seeing these Tweets, I’m certain they exist! [Via Sad and Useless]
What do you think of these Tweets?

ugh, kids these days.

did they live under a rock or something during all this time !! These kids need to get some education, general knowledge, and culture .

Kids are fuc*ing stupid today. I’m ashamed.

Wow, that’s just sad. It seems kids these days are way less educated than my peers and I were at the exact same age. We learned about it in depth in grade 7 and I had heard about the real Titanic before the movie ever existed. I still haven’t even seen the movie, but have seen many documentaries and articles. It’s tragic, and I can’t believe that there’s people who have never heard of it as a historical event, but only as a movie.
guest
@nihaokeisha@xanga - Don’t blame the kids, blame their idiot parents that probably let the TV raise them instead of giving them books and shit to read.
guest
So ignorant. How do you not know that this really happened???
guest
Why is it hard to believe? If it is not on the National Standards, the chances they hear about in school are slim thanks to the NCLB act. Literature, social studies, music, art, and history get pushed aside for science, math, and reading comprehension (these are all important but lose their value when you are only teaching the standardized tests). Then you have to remember that many parents leave education up to the school system and don’t expose their children to educational things outside of school.

Why are people so dumb nowadays? It’s not all that hard to believe. Movies based on actual events are made all the times. Boats sink every once in a while, especially back then.

@Erika_Steele@xanga - I agree. I never learned about the Titanic in school (Canadian btw). And to be honest I’m not a huge world history fan, so I don’t go perusing the internet to find out about the happenings in the world a hundred years ago If I was not old enough to remember the original release of the movie (based on the pictures it looks like some of them are maybe only 15-16) and didn’t actually care about looking into the movie then there’s a chance I wouldn’t have known that it was based on a true story (assuming none of the trailers indicate that it is and assuming I do not engage in conversation with others who would tell me otherwise). Much like I indeed did not know that Schindler’s List was based on a true story, because I haven’t seen it and I have no real interest in looking it up, so how would I have known about the “true story” aspect? Would I have gleamed the information out of thin air?
guest
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA oh man this gave me a good laugh. People these days :’)
guest
Some of these are really dumb, but then again I think some of these might be asking if the storyline of the movie is real, as in the whole romantic aspect. Which isn’t the absolute smartest thing to be asking, but still not as dumb as “was the Titanic real?”.
guest
@ashleynicole - But the Titanic is on the news a lot and stuff. Also, it’s understandable not to know if Schindlers list is based on a true story if you haven’t seen it, but it’s about the holocaust so if you’ve seen it you better be aware of the fact that it’s based on a true story.
guest
They were probably not even born yet or were babies when those movies came out. So they weren’t there to experience the rave about Titanic. But hey, at least some of these kids questioned.
I learned that the Titanic was real because I’ve read the reviews and the background story about the movie, I was in third grade about that time.

@emptyabyss@xanga - The Titanic is on the news? I don’t watch the news, and I’ve not seen any real mention of the Titanic in the newspapers I read or on the blogs I go to (other than a few posts here, which I hadn’t checked out). And I’m sure that many teens also don’t watch the news, much like how many youth aren’t interested in politics. I see nothing wrong with younger people, who likely haven’t seen the movie because they were too young to have known about it when it first came out and possibly don’t watch older movies, not knowing exactly how true the plot and setting of a movie is. Especially if it’s not a historical event that is usually taught in schools. And I mean, a movie can be set within a factual event but not at all be based on a true story or based on the event – it just uses that setting in a completely fictional story. Sanctuary did it with their D-Day episode; while it may have been set within a non-fictional event, the plot and characters of the episode were clearly not based on what truly transpired (unless fire elementals happen to be real!) but just used it as a way to tell a story. I don’t see how it’s that out-there to think that some (younger) people may not have heard of the historical Titanic event and believed the movie to be the imaginings of a writer.

@ashleynicole – as a Canadian, i’m surprised you don’t know titanic since the cemeteries are i’m Canada…
guest
@ashleynicole - Maybe it’s because I’m a journalist and have to follow the news well, but yes, it is quite often. And yeah, I don’t really care if people know if it’s real or not and I don’t think it’s wrong, I just find it amusing.
guest
I’m not surprised at all, I mean, people are stupid. It is sad though.
guest
@ashleynicole - If anyone makes fun of people for not knowing a piece of information it makes me think they are the stupid ones for assuming such a limited information pool. I guess they only get their info from movies and school text books… ???
guest
If “stupid” means that these kids didn’t grow up being exposed to the same things that you did, then yes. Stupid. Think about the things you weren’t exposed to growing up and whether that makes you stupid.
guest
I don’t know, I learned about it when I was in elementary school, there’s documentaries on it, when we learned about those deep sea diving exploring robots the titanic came up again, and I feel like there are a decent amount of pop culture references.. based on all those reasons I find it a bit strange that people don’t know it was real…
@emptyabyss@xanga - I was going to make the same point about Schindler’s List, but I couldn’t find a way to word it that wasn’t sarcastic.. the movie isn’t just a plot line, its based off major historical events. No, maybe the Titanic wasn’t a world issue, but it was a pretty damn big deal in America when it happened!
guest
i mean it is kinda understandable especially if these kinds are younger.
guest
so what if they don’t learn it in class? they should know before we do that it’s real because they have resources like the internet that a lot of people didn’t really have when it first came out. they’re freaking idiots and if they are honestly that stupid then i feel bad for our futures.
guest
The title should be: 10 stupid people who didn’t know the titanic was real.
guest
Off with their heads.

You people are assholes. How are they stupid? Just because they grew up learning different than you did? You act like Titanic is something that everybody has seen and has learned in school. Pull your heads out of your asses. There’s so much “common sense” to learn about, you can’t expect everybody to learn the same shit, I bet they’ve learned stuff that you haven’t and would probably thing you’re all a bunch of idiots.
guest
I think some may have just been confused whether the story of Jack and Rose was real

i am always shocked by how little many people know about history!
guest
GASP!
Wow I am surprised. I have been fascinated by all things “Titanic” since I was a wee one.
guest
WOW. That is really very sad. And to everybody who’s saying “well they’re younger…” I’m quite sure I learned about the Titanic in ELEMENTARY school. Far more than just one time, and I went to just a regular old public school. It was mentioned numerous times. But then I was a nerd who paid attention, and nobody wants to be the kid who actually cares about school, how lame :/ Why do that when you can Tweet about your ignorance and LULZZ with your friends about it.
guest
These fuckers obviously don’t watch the History channel.

I can’t even blame the kids. That has to be education at it’s finest. Unless the kids were sleeping in class, that wouldn’t surprise me either.

Although not as sad as someone trying to tell me gold wasn’t a metal. Apparently gold is a gem?? lol idiots….@Katy326 -

Guess they didn’t pass third grade lol

UGH. LITTLE PEOPLE.

personally, i think that the titanic shows up often enough in pop culture and literature that you should at least know that it was real even if you weren’t old enough to see/hear about the movie. otherwise it’s probably a sign of severe (and to me, problematic) disinterest in learning about your history and environment. the only exception to me is if you are really uneducated or you’re extremely insulated.
also, you should probably Google the answer to simple (and, potentially, stupid) questions before broadcasting it everyone on Twitter.
guest
I fear for the future.
guest
Fucking morons.

This doesn’t surprise me. My ex was a highly intelligent and well-read girl, but the first time she saw Apollo 13, a mutual friend mentioned that she didn’t know how the movie was going to end.

I was expecting the Kardashians to be on this list.
guest
Maybe some of them meant the actual movie Titanic..
And stop clumping “kids nowadays” into one category. I am not stupid, I have known that titanic actually happened.
And it ticks me off when people do that.
guest
My ex bf didn’t even know “Debbie does Dallas” was based on a true story! wtf guys, some idiots, huh…
guest
If you start this video @ 2:35, then the guy gives his POV on why kids don’t know about this, and why it’s not productive to get upset about it. Or you could just watch the whole video. It’s funny.
Regardless, I am a huge history buff and this hit me where it hurt, but at least they know it now?! LOL
guest
The Titanic was real BEFORE the movie…haha….I’m glad to report that in our local school district, they do a project on the ACTUAL sinking of the Titanic (not the movie) in history class in the 3rd grade. Did any of those people above attend school? Do they read?
guest
Giving them the benefit of the doubt here, some of them may have known that the Titanic was real but the story of Rose and Jack was fictional. That may be what some of them were questioning. I doubt I’d know about the titanic if it weren’t for the movie to be honest.
guest
i’m not sure why everyone is being so mean about it. because you knew EVERYTHING at that age (and now) didn’t you? you were knowledgeable in and well aware of every big historical event at that age, right?
maybe the kids don’t watch too much tv (which would be a good thing) or only spend their time on social media sites when they get online (makes enough sense, not many kids are interested in yahoo/fox/msnbc news and that’s fine). and maybe the schools don’t teach about it anymore.
it doesn’t make them stupid or idiots.

These people make my brain sad .
