Actress Zooey Deschanel has a number of fans who love her quirky mannerisms and off-kilter ways. She also has plenty of haters who despise her for the exact same traits. But like her or not, Zooey seems like an awfully honest, down-to-earth girl, as evidenced in a recent interview with Marie Claire.
While she recently became an aunt, Zooey revealed that work is the baby she wants to take care of, saying:
[Kids have] never been my focus… My sister was always very motherly, babysitting and stuff. I like kids, and I like being around kids – but it was never an ambition, something, like, I need…I like working. That’s what I like doing. I like to work.”
The often-silly, free-spirited actress also revealed some more serious details about her life, like how she was bullied in school for being chubby:
I was ridiculed. I still have in me the same awareness when I was 12 and chubby and a girl was spitting in my face. I’m the same person. Certainly you change, and you change perspective, you have other experiences. But isn’t it funny – I can still remember when I was treated differently from the way I’m treated now.
Opening up even further, Zooey talked about dating, saying that, “I’m just going through a divorce, so I don’t really think that’s something I want to get into now.” She also admits to literally not having time for seeing anyone due to her busy schedule. [via ONTD!]
Frankly, I didn’t used to be a Zooey fan. I thought that her whimsical nature was obnoxious, and that there was little more to her personality than cute dresses and silly faces. However, the work she’s done with her show New Girl, her blog, HelloGiggles and the three albums she’s put out in recent years have been slowly changing my mind. The honest, perhaps unpopular (people love to shun childless celebrities!) quotes she gives in this interview only make me like her more, and I hope we see this more relatable side of Zooey in the future.
What do you think of Zooey Deschanel? Was this interview interesting to you?

That doesn’t say she doesn’t want kids, at all. She just stated it wasn’t her priority. It wasn’t my priority to have children either, but I did, and I couldn’t imagine my life without my son. Quit putting words in her mouth. She will most likely change her mind. I guess you only like a person if they don’t want children? The only thing I got from your post was that you thought she was a snobby, artistic person, so you disliked her. LOL, lame post.

Who in their right mind thinks “Oh I want a bratty, screaming child that will be super painful to pop out, ruin my body, and financially drain me for 18+years.” It seems more logical to not want kids than to want them.

I love Zooey and I especially love the show New Girl… I’ll be watching tonight, like I do EVERY Tuesday!
I’m happy to see that even though she turned into a famous actress, she remembers where she came from and how things used to be. It seems like some people forget that.
Can’t blame her for not wanting kids, they’re not for everyone.. but I am excited to have them!

Good to hear more about her haha.

@Celtic_haven@xanga - I read Zooey’s quote to indicate that while she likes kids, she’s never had the drive for them like her sister has; they are not for her. She is nurturing her career, spending all of her time on it, and is content with that- it is her life focus. While she may change her mind, she may not- many people consciously choose not to have children because it is not what they want in their lives. While you may not have intended it this way, to me, your comment comes across as indicating someone “does not want children” is insulting and a negative reflection on their character.

aww, I love zooey deschanel. I don’t know, even though the whole manic pixie dream girl facade gets in the way sometimes she always seemed kind of real to me. I like that

I always like learning more about her.

I was reading earlier that she is under a lot of fire for saying she doesn’t want kids, which is ridiculous. I also find it ridiculous that some people come off like they think that because they changed their mind about kids means that everyone else will. There is no need to be offended by someone else’s life decisions. It does not in any way validate, or invalidate, your choices. If you NEED other people to validate your life decisions, maybe you should reconsider whatever it is you’re doing with your life.

She has the coolest last name. Just sayin’

@elilmath@xanga - Her whole name is the coolest!
I love Zooey and I appreciate her speaking her mind and not caring what others think. That’s how she wants to live her life so who are we to judge?

@Saridactyl@xanga - If people are actually getting upset, I totally agree. It’s not even like she dislike kids. Why would ANYONE care is someone else is choosing not becoming a mother? It’s not requirement in life to have a kid. Being pregnant and mother isn’t the be all, end all of womanhood. It’s just…don’t worry about other people’s life decisions when they affect you in no way.

I’ve always liked her and her decisions , like anyone else’s, is totally respected

She didn’t say anything about not wanting kids. She could very well want them in the future…or not. Either way, it’s her choice. I really want to dislike her for her quirkiness, but things like this make me like her more.

I hate New Girl, it’s one of the most sexist shows I’ve seen, hiding behind “quirkiness” that is actually just a cutesy version of backwards feminism. It also ripped off a youtube series called “The Zooey Deschanel Show” that parodied her, which sucks. HelloGiggles is all right though.
