It’s no secret that prom dresses are growing increasingly scandalous with each spring. Whether this is a tacky evolution or a natural social progression doesn’t matter, because it seems that formal dresses aren’t going to go back to ’50s styles any time soon. But in case you are craving a trip to more modest times, we have a gallery of prom dresses through the years. Check it out after the cut!
I personally favor the ’40s and ’50s prom looks, though the ones from the ’70s definitely have more entertainment value!
Which prom era do you like best? What do you think of prom dresses becoming more revealing?

Do people really wear such revealing things to prom? Prom dresses are formals…they are supposed to be classy….what part of those [more revealing] dresses says classy?

hahahaha I just can’t stop laughing at the boy in the last picture with the two girls.

@wildchildofthebluemoon@xanga - Classy is relative.
guest
My favorite one is the first one. It’s like a wedding dress practically. Ballin’. Next time if you’re doing a style evolution it would be cool if you added the dates. I see the one for ’22.
guest
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - True, but I still feel like if you surveyed a large group of people, the majority of people would consider certain things classy, and certain things unclassy. It is THAT classy, I’m referring to (assuming of course that I didn’t miss something somewhere and completely decided that unclassy things were classy).
guest
@wildchildofthebluemoon@xanga – With things becoming more skin exposing and retailers making such items it would seem to suggest a social shift in what is considered classy. People should just wear what they want as long as it doesn’t leave goo on the seat.

I liked the dresses from the 20s, 50s and 60s. I graduated in 2000, so I’d have to say that the red dress from the 1990s pretty much summed up all the dresses that my classmates wore. I can’t imagine going to prom in those skimpy things some people call prom dresses nowadays. I’m no prude, but prom dresses are made for teenagers. No female of any age should have to wear such revealing outfits, let alone minors. That blue dress in the last picture can barely be called a dress, it looks like lingerie! The pink and red current fashions, wow. If a girl needs to groom below the belt more than just shaving their legs, that’s just too revealing. Funny, this topic was discussed this morning on the radio morning program I normally listen to.

I love the 2000s one, the white one with the pink ribbon….after that all of a sudden its WTF? People let their children wear that?

@wildchildofthebluemoon@xanga - The last pic is in Russia. Here, yeah, that’s modest. Girls here dress like $10-dollar-blowjob hookers.
guest
My whole senior prom look was 50/60′s style: cap sleeved tea length, beaded dress, sequined T-straps, pin curls…but the dress was bright orange =)

I don’t know any high school that would allow girls to dress this way at the prom. A handful of pictures (most of them from other countries or modeling shots) in no way indicates that girls in the US are dressing like this for prom. Even in instances where the school allows students to wear dresses that are just revealing, most parents wouldn’t allow it.
guest
@MoonFaeEyryan@xanga - See… People on the streets… Yeah, it can get pretty revealing, but at my prom everyone wore full length dresses with only shoulders showing at most. No real cleavage…no stomacks… It wasn’t allowed to be scandally clad. Lol @ $10 blowhob hookers.

I graduated in 2009, and uh.. no one dressed like the last ones. The most offensive thing would have been a bit of extra cleavage compared to normal attire. In fact, here are some of the pictures from my Facebook:

I graduated in 2003, just to offer some perspective before I comment.
I really don’t think most teenagers are doing this. Just like most teenagers aren’t sexting regularly (but some do) and most teens aren’t going to sex parties (but some do). The most scandalous information is what leaks.
I recall seeing advertisements for prom dresses when I was in high school that were super revealing like these… but nobody wore them at my prom. I doubt that a large percentage of girls are actually wearing these. It’s just that, compared to the salacious nature of these, their dresses are boring and not memorable.

I like number 17.. it’s tasteful, strapless but not short or revealing. What happened after that one?!
guest
Yeah, no one really dressed like that at my prom back in ’07 and ’08. Though this senior brought a sophmore who wore what I think of as a “hoochie dress”, but mainly because it’s just very short and form fitting and better for the club, but not extremely revealing.
guest
i don’t know why people get upset about scandalous clothing, as though it directly affects behavior. my grandmother dressed modestly as a teenager. but from what i’ve heard from her siblings at family reunions, her behavior was ANYTHING but modest

I really doubt that a parent would allow their teen to wear something like this to a prom…

@MoonFaeEyryan@xanga - Just so everyone knows, MoonFaeEyryan DOES NOT represent all girls. I only charge $8 (hollaback)

While I don’t think a lot of girls would dress in a slutty dress, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some that would have tried or are going to try to push as much as they can to wear something revealing.
I did know of someone who went to prom in a cotton dress and tee combo and was kicked out because she wasn’t wearing the proper prom attire. Her outfit was the type that was more appropriate for the weekend, not prom.
guest
I personally favor 40′s era dresses. My high school would never have allowed any of the last 3 dresses, not to mention my parents!
guest
Haha pffff whatever, my prom dress actually was a vintage 50′s dress! Its all about taste, I know a girl going this year who is wearing a very modest dress with a huge print of The Scream on it. And of course there will be those who feel the need to show as much skin and be as sexy as possible.
Also, I’m in love with the one on the bottom left. It reminds me of a ballerina. So pretty!
guest
lmao…I must admit there were a few girls who looked like the last pic at my prom. Apparently one girl made her dress…I think she may have run out of fabric. But she had no problem showing skin so I don’t know….
/sigh my sister is wearing one of these dumbass dresses with the cut outs to her prom. It shows her rib cage! Holy shit…I wish my mother would do something.
guest
I laughed at the kid in the background in the last pic.
Why have girls become so hoochie mama these days? They are so young and have the rest of their lives ahead of them. They are doing this at such a young age, and it’s pointless.
I like the 50s and 60s. Woman had class back then.
guest
i love the 70′s style! i graduated in 2010 and no one dressed that “offensive”. the most tacky dresses were really short but no one was basically just dressed in a bikini.
guest
Not only are those dresses distasteful, they are UGLY.
The 90s dresses were modern and feminine. Maybe I’m biased, but to me, that’s the prettiest modern look.

@ashleynicole -
Umm I know you’re trying to show us that people don’t really wear crazy dresses but I don’t think it’s wise to put pictures of your prom for the public to see. I know those pics may look harmless but you’ll never know what bad people could do and use them for bad purposes. Just a thought..

@yan_ni@xanga - Considering they are on my Facebook, meaning many people could access them and do just as you are suggesting, it really doesn’t bother me. The likelihood of me stumbling across such edits anyway is slim to none unless they were specifically sent to me.

I don’t know much about the different eras besides the 1920s, but this article doesn’t exactly explain how we got to the plunging necklines… Use something besides photos please.
guest
@voicimessecrets@xanga - haha. A girl at my high school does them for $5 in the bathroom. She’s a freshman.
guest
i seriously think that you can see one of those girls’ pubic bone (girl in the bottom row in the red two piece). gross…..save something for the imagination…..leave something for the chase ladies!
guest
@ashleynicole - yes i know what you mean.. but how about privacy lock on facebook itself? i guess its the paranoid in me.. anyway if its okay with you then its okay.
guest
Ah, the 70s.
Who goes to formals and proms these days anyway?
guest
Uhhhhh…. Maybe I’m just naive, but I’m pretty sure that NO ONE would consider those last three dresses prom style dresses. I’m sure ther will be the occasional girl who may go this way to push a boundary, but to go as far as to think this is acceptable, I doubt it.
I see how you mean by prom outfits being more revealing and lower cut and more skin, especially in the back areas, or high slits… but there would at least be the appearance of classic formality. Especially if it is a school run prom. Frills, flow, fluff, glitter…
I would assume them dresses in the last three photos were party dresses sure, maybe even homecoming– but definitely not prom style. I mean yea, okay maybe a few do skank out a bit, but the idea of Prom itself– not on a whole a sex party. Especially when half of your parents are going to chaperon the dance.

70s were definitely the best.
