When I was a kid, it was all about Hanson. Even now girls my age (I was born in ’87) will giggle and reminisce about the old days and how hot we thought these guys were. Really?! Yeah, really. I find it hard to believe myself, looking at them now. But their post-grunge home-grown awesomeness found its way into my CD collection, onto my bedroom walls, and yes, even onto some Pogs. But they weren’t the first and certainly not the last of their kind, as boy-band teen heartthrobs are a theme for every generation. Take a look at some of the best from years past and present, after the cut.
One Direction seems to be the hottest thing to come out of the fame machine lately. Their debut album Up All Night seems to be sweeping the younger set. I think they kind of look like a creepy underaged Abercrombie campaign, but that’s because I’m 25 and not 14.
I was still too old to appreciate the Jonas Brothers, but I was no stranger to the sensational appeal they had. The boys went from the Disney channel to every facet of the media practically overnight. A polished-up Hanson, no?
Suffice it to say, the ’90s were a funny time. The Backstreet Boys might’ve been pitted against rivals N*Sync for record sales, but they were created by the same man, Lou Pearlman, the boy-band mastermind of Orlando, Florida. The appeal of the boy-band formula was that there was a guy in the band for every “type” a girl might want: The Bad Boy, The Older Brother Type, The Cute One, The Shy One, and The Heartthrob, or at least that’s how the mockumentary 2Ge+her portrayed it!
If the ’90s were funny, the ’80s were positively ridiculous. Just look at the New Kids On The Block! Now, if you’ll believe it, they’re touring with the Backstreet Boys as NKOTBSB: New Kids On The Backstreet Boys… wait, what? Seriously.
These are just a handful of the most memorable boy-bands from my generation. I’ll include some more in the gallery, but tell us:
Who were the boy-band sensations of your childhood and adolescence? Who were you totally gaga over that, in hindsight are completely hilarious-looking?

@elilmath@xanga - HELL YEAH! Saw this “It’s gonna be MAY” pic on Pinterest humor, and ever since then I’ve been re-listening to all my favorite *//\\//SYNC songs
DD Is it sad that I still remember some of the moves…? Yeah, feel free to judge me.
Anyhoo, I’m an ’87 baby, too, so I don’t understand the appeal of the current boy bands. However, I do remember when I was crazed fan myself, so I can totally appreciate their obsession <3

I’m a Backstreet Boy’s girl forever and for always.
I was a little old for the Jonas Brothers, but I really liked them. And I thought their show on the Disney channel was hilarious. And I miss them. It’s only been a few years, but Kevin had to go and get married and since he gave away his purity ring to his wife, we haven’t really heard from the guys since. And I’m sad…

When I was a little girl, I loved New Edition. Then in junior high school I loved and then was too cool for NKOTB in the same year. I became a “gangsta” by the way.

*NSYNC FOREVER AND ALWAYS!!!
I listen(ed) to every boy band mentioned in this post, except for One Direction. I actually never heard any of their songs. But whatever. Every generation needs their boy band to drool after lol.
Supposedly 98 Degrees is coming together again.
To this day, I still want to see Boyz II Men in concert. The way their voices blend together. Their harmonies, their pitch, the way they balance each other’s voices, their music? Ughhh! What I would give for them to serenade to me! *sigh*

I LOVED Hanson and still do.
In case you didn’t know, they are still very much around and making new music. They released a new album about a year and a half ago and I just saw them in concert 2 months ago. Oh yeah, and they’re all pretty hot now too – too bad they’re also all married. lol

I managed to miss Hanson (part of it my age, part of it having lived in a seriously depressing 10-years-behind cloudy town in rural PA) but my Dad had MMMbop in his music collection and I always loved it, so when I got my first car in 2010, which had a tape player, I ordered Middle of Nowhere off ebay. Hanson represents something for me and I cannot quite explain its importance heheh
I was in the age bracket of Aaron Carter and Backstreet Boys, etc. I loved the bleached tip spiked hair thing.
