Most people seem to have their phone attached to the hip. Even if you’re on a dinner date, hanging with friends or having a serious conversation, it seems that lots of folks immediately whip out their mobile device at the sound of a text. So can you imagine how social situations would be if people had tattoos notifying them of incoming messages?
While “texting tattoos” haven’t been invented just yet, Nokia decided to jump the gun and patent them, just in case technology does advance that far. In theory, text tattoos would use ferromagnetic ink, which would vibrate from “magnetic waves emitted from a user’s phone, sending ‘a perceivable stimulus’ (think a small pulse or itch)” every time the user receives a text or call. There are also plans to have different pulses for different notifications, such as texts, emails, phone calls and voicemails. [via Gawker]
Would you ever get a text tattoo? If not, how would you feel about friends that had one?

Personally, I think it’s dumb.
Yes, I am one of those people who is very attached to her cell phone. But believe it or not, there are sometimes when I like to put my phone away and focus on something I’m doing, whether it’s business or personal.
I think vibrating tattoos would be annoying in a lot of situations. Like, when my boyfriend and I making love, I never have my phone near us. I certainly wouldn’t want my own body ruining the moment and interrupting us.

That’s insane. How would you ever sleep? Would you have to get it altered every time you got a new phone number? If you got behind on paying your phone bill, the cell phone company would torment you through that thing night and day.

The ferromagnetic ink would be controlled by your phone… so there would probably be an app that lets you control it. So you would be able to designate who could vibrate your tattoo and what times are blacked out from vibrations.

Thank goodness that
a) I don’t plan on getting another tattoo
b) I never was that attached to my cell-phone when I had one

As if we weren’t attached to technology enough already.

All I have to say is; vibrating tattoos. Bahahaha! But in all seriousness, my phone annoys the shit out of me but I always instinctively know when I am getting a call or txt. I dunno why.

Dear Nokia: You are retarded.

i would not want to itch every time my phone went off. are you serious? i would freak the
**** out if i felt something in my arm vibrate. it’s giving me the heebie jeebies just thinking about it. and i think it’s hysterical that nokia of all companies tries patenting this. who even uses nokia anymore?
daisy / 603 posts
All these Nokia bashing comments are hilarious…. really, no one uses Nokia anymore… they made like the first BIG (literally – it was like the size of a house phone) cell phone.
Why are you trying to patent something that doesn’t even exist? What if it’s never made because everyone else thinks it’s stupid too? lol

Worst. Idea. Ever.

Lame.
I think it’s ridiculous how obsessed people are with their cellphones; people cannot seem to put the damned things down!
I remember the days BEFORE cell phones, hell, I remember the days before caller ID (Granted, my whole family thought that was a pretty nifty idea!) so maybe that’s why I rarely think about my cell phone and most of the time it’s in my bag… and I’ve just got the basic, el cheapo phone.
I can understand if you need one with all the bells and whistles for work, but why the hell do I see KIDS, freaking KIDS with iphones that probably cost more than one of my paychecks?!
Bleh, anyway getting off track -> A tattoo that lets you know when you’re getting a text is over-the-top! The phones have ringtones, and they vibrate is this really not good enough? C’mon now…

lol but only nokia can use it. meaning no one in america will.

Wow that’s stupid…

@Cosmar@xanga - an iphone costs more than your paycheck? Clearly it is time to find a new job.

Personally I like the idea of someone getting one of those tattoos.
Because then if they make me mad, I can spam their tattoos and make them shiver.
guest
is it bad that I kind of think this is weirdly cool?
guest
This is kinda scary. But oddly awesome. But more scary.

How about a dim glowing patch of skin??
guest
what? no! are they crazy?! lol…

EW. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. It’s bad enough that we are so controlled by technology as is. Lets say there’s someone you’re trying to avoid & haven’t figured out a way to tell them, so they call your cell. You don’t answer. They text you. You don’t respond. They leave voicemails. You don’t return their call. They FACEBOOK you. etc etc etc. It’s awkward enough with all the ways of getting in touch with someone you may not want to be in touch with at that point, the fact they have all these various methods now. Maybe it’s a friend & you haven’t figured out a diplomatic way of talking to them about it. But thanks to all the technology..there’s NO excuse to not be in touch with someone when they try to reach out to you. -_-
NOW
there’s talks of when & if ink gets to the point to emit or feel magnetic pulses..that it will be marketed?!
Shit son! Now you really have no excuse! Now Sally is going to be asking you “Didn’t you hear the phone ring? Or it buzz when I texted you?..Oh..Well why didn’t you feel your OWN SKIN vibrate huh?! you can’t misplace your skin!!!!!”
This is a horrendous idea.
guest
The fuck kind of crazy idea is this??!?!?!!? That goes along the lines of getting a credit card chip embedded in your skin, so all you have to do is scan your wrist and you’ve made a purchase!! I don’t see myself getting a “text tattoo”, as much as I’m all for the tats! That’s a scary thought- having technology literally under your skin! D-:

im a tattooist and this is fucking stupid .

@Ride_Every_Stride@xanga - I’m the same exact way! It’s like….a 6th sense almost!

Too many people call/text other people at ungodly hours or when they just want to be left alone, so no, that would be terrible.
sunflower / 257 posts
maybe by then we won’t even be using cell phones..
orchid / 137 posts
This is by far the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
guest
Freaks. That’s scary.
Is this a hoax? What about market analysis? doesn’t seem like many people want to get this. Or was the patent really cheap bc it is really stupid? lol
@lovelyish - I can imagine a chip that perceives signals from a specific phone (I bet that’s already possible), but not ink.
And anyways I wouldn’t get anything like that bc every technology can potentially be hacked and I don’t want someone to hack something in my body.
Lets hope capitalism doesn’t go as far as giving employers the
oppurtunity to force employees to get something of that sort. Or the
state. *shudders*. not a good idea.
guest
That’s going a little too far.
guest
That’s fucked. No.

Fuck.No.

Talk about a sixth sense lol
