Sources say George Clooney has been arrested — along with his father and several other activists — for protesting outside of the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, D.C.
They were protesting the violence committed by the government of Sudan on its own innocent men, women and children. They were demanding they allow humanitarian aid into the country before it becomes the largest humanitarian crisis in the world,
says Clooney’s publicist.
Clooney is reportedly pleased at this turn of events as it might draw attention to the crisis at hand. Clooney has been a long-time activist against the cruelty of the Sudanese government to its own people. Find a video from his recent short documentary and the complete story here.

Why the hell was he arrested? He was just protesting. What happened to freedom of speech?

@opheliatohamlet@xanga - I think you need a permit for planned protesting. Maybe they didn’t have one? Either way, it’s stupid.
Anyway, I’m glad to see a celebrity use their influence for a good cause.

@opheliatohamlet@xanga - Oh wait, apparently he was warned not to cross a police line in front of the embassy but then he did. Good for him. The arrest is sure to make it more public, so in the end it really is a good thing.

What Lovelyish didn’t note is that he was arrested with more than a dozen other high-profile human rights activists, including the president of the ENOUGH Project & United to End Genocide, a few members of Congress, & a handful of faith leaders – including my boss.
@opheliatohamlet@xanga - @emptyabyss@xanga - Embassies are private property, so they were technically trespassing. The group ignored warnings from the police & upon the third one, they were removed from the premises. The arrest was a planned press event.

Good on him

@SuburbanSweetheart - yeah, i read that already. embassies usually don’t arrest people for walking in their property though. i still support him anyway, since the situation in sudan is something people need to know about. i think it’s good for him, getting arrested for a good cause.
