Spanx creator Sara Blakely now provides more than just a way for us ladies to squeeze into tight dresses. She’s become a feminist role model, having been named as the youngest female billionaire by Forbes!
Blakley, who owns 100% of the company she created, was listed on Forbes‘ billionaire list this Wednesday. While she’s been fairly private about the announcement, Sara did say that, “I have been so pleased to know how excited all of my customers have been for me.” She also revealed that, to celebrate, she went out to dinner with her brother. Who ordered everything on the menu, caviar included. Typical sibling move! [via AJC]
How do you feel about Sara and her business? If you became a billionaire, what would you do?

That’s great for her! I don’t know about her being a feminist…because in my opinion feminists are all about freeing women, and “supportive” undergarments have a restrictive quality about them. However, it’s wonderful that she had an idea and ran with it which helped her become a billionaire. Her undergarments are practical, functional, and sleekly designed with the modern woman in mind. They are definitely not like your grandma’s girdle! (Side note: I don’t think that model pictured above really needs to wear Spanx…)

@babybug329@xanga - ”I don’t know about her being a feminist…because in my opinion feminists are all about freeing women, and “supportive” undergarments have a restrictive quality about them.” -I agree!
None the less- good for her! She worked hard to get where she is and it paid off. Good article.

Yeah, I’m gonna go ahead and put her under the “not feminist” list. Just because one becomes the first-female-something doesn’t mean that she should be looked up to by feminists. I’m sure most feminists would rather support someone who tells women that they don’t have to fit into this literal mold of what the female body should look like than support someone who makes a quick buck on preying on women’s insecurities.

This made me smile when I heard about it. I remember seeing her on the Tyra show a while ago, and she seemed pretty cool. Now it seems like every celeb and their mother is wearing Spanx. I’m glad for her

Yeah, a feminist that makes her money selling women products to make them look skinny.

how is she a feminist role model when she sells a product that makes women skinnier and more appealing to men?

She is not a feminist role model! A feminist role model would invent a pill that makes people get over them damn selves and realize that a woman’s body is not perfect and doesn’t have to be perfectly skinny and “smooth” beneath clothing! Good for her that she is now a millionaire by selling something that has probably lead to more eating disorders.

She lives near me. Her house is fucking enormous. Good for you, girl!

I can’t believe you people are bitching about her not being a feminist. Jesus Christ lol. You people don’t believe someone is a feminist unless she wears flannel and chops her hair off. There’s no reason you can’t make yourself look good and not be a feminist.

How does inventing Spanx not make you a feminist? That seems silly. It would be like saying that any woman who wears make-up, uses acne-clearing or wrinkle-reducing cream, wears clothing that flatters her figure, shaves her legs, wears heels, or styles her hair is not a feminist. People can be believe in feminism and women’s rights and care about how they look.
For what it is worth, I have done all the above as well as wearing Spanx and it was not to make myself more appealing to men, but rather I did it to avoid the cattiness of bitchy women and for fun.

never heard of her or her product line. but from the looks of it, it seems as meritable as the snuggie.

Create a need and you’ll find the $$

I think having one good idea should not make you THIS rich. I hate patent right how it is. The idea
is that the creative get rewarded, which is great–they should, and of course she should get money for the work she did afterwards for her company but…. a billionaire?? I think this is not fair, I don’t believe she “earned” it like all the people in the spanx fabrics actually earn (&deserve) money.
If I became a billionaire that way I’d try to improve working conditions. (after buying myself a nice house and car, but like I said…it’s ok to get rich, but everything has its limits).

Being a successful female doesn’t make you a “feminist role model”. *shakes head*
But good for her! yay capitalism!
