Demi Lovato has always been admirably candid about her past struggles with eating disorders and self-harm. But recently on MTV’s Stay Strong she opened up more than anyone would have expected.
Lovato entered treatment in 2010 for help with her personal issues. And while she seems to be on the mend, Demi admitted on the show that, “I cannot tell you that I have not thrown up since treatment. I cannot tell you that I have not cut myself since treatment. I’m not perfect.” She even went on to disclose how she spent Thanksgiving evening on the phone with her sponsor, getting support so she wouldn’t throw up her meal. But while there have been tough post-treatment times for Lovato, she says her fans and her music are what see her through. [via E!]
While some may see Lovato’s admission as a sign of weakness or relapse, I think it’s amazing. Celebrities rarely open up and share their flaws, and Lovato is showing the young women that admire her that no one is perfect, and that change isn’t instant. Hopefully Demi only continues to get better, and to provide a strong role model for girls dealing with similar issues.
What do you think of Demi’s admission? Could you be so honest on television?

I’m glad she’s being honest. It’s hard to live with a disorder (I say LIVE WITH because you’re not cured. You learn to live with it one day at a time & not regress back to your bad state). She’s still an inspiration to people going through these things.
Stay Strong, Demi! <3

There are women/girls that are suffering with SI and eating disorders who look up to her. I think it is awesome that she is letting them know that it really is a daily struggle that you are going to have to work at. I love that she is letting them know that even when you have a “perfect” life there s still room for self-hatred to come in. Recovery is not like the movies where you get better and magically never struggle again. I like that she is painting a realistic picture.

She has such strength for opening up like that.
On a side note: where did the rest of her thumb go on her right hand? Is it behind her hair?

I think it’s admirable of her to open up like that and share her story. She’s a great role model for girls and I think it’s great that she admitted to relapsing during her recovery. I hope that she gets to a good point in her life and finds that the urges are less strong.

It doesn’t work as easily as going to some center for 8 weeks and coming out fixed. It’s really hard work and a lot of struggle and only natural that it’s not a quick fix, and it’s good that someone speaks openly about it.
I think her honesty also shows that she is still working on herself, and willing to do so and didn’t just get treatment bc she had to. Good for her.

Honestly, I never liked her until I found out how hard she was trying. I really relate to everything she’s talking about. The clinic I was in had a shooting with 2 people dead today. Sorry, that doesn’t have anything to do with this article. Anyways, I’m SO happy for her

I like that she is so honest about everything and I like that she didn’t spiral back into her disorder when all those people started calling her fat right after she had gotten out of treatment.

I love that she’s being honest about things. I didn’t like her music, but after hearing her daily struggles I absolutely respect her as a person. And think she is a great example of when the media puts too much pressure on young girls. She’s making a great role model of herself.

Honesty is always admirable and I do understand that she is someone to look up to for people undergoing the same issues, but I wonder if being in the limelight is such a good thing for her personally. Maybe a long break would give her a chance to recover.

@xhalesx@revelife - my guess is a poor attempt at photoshop lol

I admire it. I hope that one day she can confess that she has been for months, if not years, without doing the harmful behaviors…
You know? So, I appreciate her honesty. I just hope she lives up to the hope I have for her.
I hope she can be as strong as she knows she can. COME ON DEMI! You’ve got this, girl!!
