I dreaded sitting down to write this post, because I knew it would require me to do something very difficult (and possibly gag-inducing). I was going to have to look at photos of donuts. Maybe even the worst of the worst donuts: Krispy Kremes. Disgusting.

It’s not just donuts that make me cringe; coffee cake, cinnamon rolls and even some exceptionally saccharine muffins also make the list. I can’t explain why, but the thought of eating these breaded, intensely sweet foods makes me ill. It’s not that I’m the healthiest of eaters. It’s just that I’d rather consume a mound of bacon than even think about touching one bear claw.

Sweets like cake and cookies are fine for me to eat (though I have always been the kind of person who will skip dessert to have another helping of dinner). Which is why my disgust at donuts and the like is so perplexing. Maybe it’s the thought of consuming so much sugar first thing in the morning. Maybe it’s the intensely rich sensation of biting into heavy bread slathered in icing. Maybe I’m just crazy.

Donuts are the go-to food managers bring into work to treat their employees. I can’t count the times I’ve watched coworkers stampede towards a Krispy Kreme box, grab one (or three) and wolf down the sugary treat while watching donut-less me with a mix of suspicion and confusion. I’ve tried to make myself like them to avoid these sorts of situations. It would be amazing to never here the screech of, “WHAT! You don’t like DONUTS?” again. But, unlike cauliflower and broccoli, I’ve never been able to make myself stomach them (that’s probably actually a very good statement).

Sometimes I feel like I’m missing out on culinary experiences due to my donut fear. But then I look at my freezer, packed with frozen pizza, tortellini and burgers, and realize that I probably don’t need to add another unhealthy food into my diet anyways.

Are there any foods that disgust you? Does anyone ever give you trouble for it?
