We rarely get much sleep here at Lovelyish HQ, but last night was a glorious 9 hours of sleep! Wow, what a strange feeling.
Of course though, Time Magazine was able to turn those nine hours into a Bad Thing:
Studies show that people who sleep between 6.5 hours and 7.5 hours a night, as they report, live the longest. And people who sleep 8 hours or more, or less than 6.5 hours, they don’t live quite as long. There is just as much risk associated with sleeping too long as with sleeping too short. The big surprise is that long sleep seems to start at 8 hours. Sleeping 8.5 hours might really be a little worse than sleeping 5 hours.
Oh well, I’m willing to die younger if it means I can sleep nine hours a night!
Did you sleep well last night? How much did you sleep?

No. Pain woke me.

No, I woke up every hour.

It will be no fun living longer if I’m a bitch everyday and don’t have any friends because I don’t get my 8.5 hours of sleep every night.

I’m happy as long as I get 7 hours, 8 if it’s the weekend

Sigh. The amount of sleep your body requires is individual to each person! Eight hours is simply the average, but some people do not need close to that, some need more. And sleep is also cumulative, meaning that if you only got 6 hours of sleep one night and your body actually runs better on 8, then there’s a good chance that if you are able to sleep in the next day that you will. I know that if I sleep too few hours during the week, I tend to make up for it over the weekend – I may sleep in on Saturday but still feel quite tired, but then sleep in the same way on Sunday and feel rested. So imo, better to go to sleep before 11pm (as your body starts to heal and organize itself by that time) and then let yourself sleep as late as you can (i.e. how long your body will let you sleep or at what time you need to start getting ready for work/school). Keep this up for a few weeks and your circadian rhythm should adjust itself enough so that you are getting the amount of sleep that your body works best with. So if that happens to be 10 hours, then that’s what your body needs. If it’s 5, then that’s just what works best for you.
I think I’ll trust my first year psych prof over Time magazine

I got eight hours…. but it was nyquil induced sleep.

I got about 7. Boy do I wish it had been more! =D Sleep sounds so good…

I slept 5 1/2 hours last night and I feel awful right now. Pretty sure it is not enough for me. I like to get 7 to 8 hours, that is optimal for me, especially when coupled with eating properly and exercising regularly.

MMMMM sleep is my favorite activity. I have slept my body so hard that I literally can not function without nine hours of sleep. I usually sleep between 9-12 hours every night. According to my mom, I was the best sleeper as a baby and it has continued throughout my adult life!

Maybe it’s all a philosophical thing. Like, if you sleep 6 hours a night for a year you’ll sleep 2,190 hours whereas if you sleep 10 hours a night for a year you’ll sleep 3,650 hours a year. So maybe the 1,460 hour difference is the hours you actually get to live, hence being able to live longer.

Very opposite of what is traditional taught to people about a good night’s rest. That association with living longer seems somewhat bogus to me though. About my sleep last night, I slept very well. I went snowboarding yesterday so I gave myself a nice workout and fell asleep within minutes =] Mmm a nap sounds nice right about now…

maybe the people, who sleep 6.5-7.5 hours get enough sleep but they might do other things that are unhealthy that’ll cancel out the one healthy sleep habit. I sleep about an average of 6 hours during work days, but around 10-12 hours on my off days. I got about 12 hours of sleep last night. I’m active at work and get my exercise in because I’m up and about on my feet for most of my work shift, so it balances out somehow to stay healthy
I eat mostly junk food but I do not eat excessive calories and I think I exercise most of it away. I walk a few miles during my off days. plus my bloodwork tests don’t show high cholesterol, etc. how many of those people have higher levels of stress than the others? so there are other factors about overall healthy living
