A belt can completely transform an outfit, and is one of the easiest ways to pull your outfit together. There are many different types of belts, and ways to wear them.
Here are eleven stylish ways to wear a belt.
1. Gold chain link belt over a sweater
2. Belted plaid shirt over a dress
3. Blouse with belted denim shorts
4. Wide leather belt (with matching boots) over black dress
5. Skinny belt over blazer
6. Braided belt over fur collar vest
7. Skinny leather belt over cardigan and blouse
8. Skinny grommet belt over pleated skirt
9. Vintage gold belt over bright coral skirt

I thought this was 11 different ways to wear a belt (other than around your waist), not 11 outfits you could wear a belt with.

I really, really, really hate belts worn over jackets or shirts. Belts imo are to be worn to hold up your bottoms or to accentuate your waist when wearing a dress. Whenever it’s just thrown over a shirt (not including long ones that can double as short dresses) I find it looks really super lame.

@ashleynicole - #2, 5, 6, 7 and 11 are all examples of a belt being worn over a shirt or blazer. We’d love to hear which one of these have earned your comment about “really really really hat[ing] belts worn over jackets or shirts.”
Clothing and accessories don’t always have to be purely functional. Hats, ties and jewelry are all classic examples. Belts are one of the most versatile accessories you can own, and wearing them over a shirt or blazer can really open up your wardrobe.

@x0_electric_kiss@xanga - @ashleynicole - I would just like to reiterate both of these comments.

I like to wear flowy skirts as shirts and belt it at the waist so it still has definition

@lovelyish - That would be all of them listed here. Yes, belts are accessories. But I find that belts worn over shirts and jackets just do not look flattering in about 99% of the cases I’ve seen online and in person. It just creates the weirdest proportion to the torso if you are adding a belt that isn’t already built into the item itself – in which case the belt is usually meant to tie around only one side of the body, which I think looks fine because it doesn’t split the torso down the horizontal center thus making the torso look weirdly short. Wearing a belt with a dress or long shirt that can pass as a dress does not create that odd proportion because it makes the legs look longer.

@ashleynicole - #3 and 10 are very traditional usages of belts. #3 even has belt loops…

@lovelyish - “That would be all of them listed here.” As in the ones you listed in your reply, the ones that have belts worn over shirts and jackets. Belts worn over bottoms or dresses I like, as I already stated.

I like to put it around my pants…you know, through the belt loops.

What if you are bigger than a size 2?

@NightCometh@xanga - I’m a size ~8 right now and I frequently belt my waist when wearing dresses or high-waist skirts
I hate belting around my hips though, it digs into my skin even if it’s extremely loose!
