“It’s like the every-other-decade theory, you know? The ’50s were boring, the ’60s rocked, and the ’70s—oh, my god, they obviously suck. Come on. Maybe the ’80s will be radical.”
— Cynthia Dunn, Dazed and Confused
In visual terms, here is Cynthia Dunn’s “every other decade” theory (yellow = rock, red = obviously sucked):
1950s – Boring
1960s – Rocked
1970s – Obviously sucked
1980s – Radical
1990s – ??
2000s – ??
2010s – ??
What do you think: did the 2000s rock, and the ’90s and ’10s obviously suck? Does Cynthia’s Every Other Decade theory hold water?
And what’s your favorite decade?

The 1990s are amazing and always will be. It’s when i grew up.

We obsessed with the 1990s.. and the 1980s while in the 2000-2005… 6 years later since it’s so great we still obsess with the 90s.
would you rather obsess about the job depression, dead great musicians, scandals everywhere, money laundering, great MTV being replaced by crappy MTV? Didn’t think soooo

I don’t see how this makes much sense. If anything people tend to bitch the most about their current decade and glorify the one beforehand.

The 90s will forever rule for me!! My whole fucking childhood boring?! She must have slepted that. Every decade has defining moments whether we like them or not. But to call an entire decade boring is a bit much.
I do know that every other decade a past trend may return.
@crashthedr3am@xanga - OMFG when TRL died, so did MTV for me. TRL was the IT show to watch everyday after school for music, news & everything. I was a bit below the age demographic for it but it goes to show if it’s good, it appeals to everyone. Oh & DARIA!!! <3

i loved the 90s. if anything, the 80s sucked.

The 90s were pretty awesome. Tamagotchis, Chia pets, Spice Girls, crimped hair, Carmen Sandiego… Come on!
I’ve not thought any of the decades I’ve lived in were bad. So… ya know.

@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - I don’t know how they can even still call it MTV unless M now stands for Mundane rather than Music! I watched Daria after school…and then there was My So Called Life. Jordan Catalano was hot.

the 90′s were awesome!

You can’t judge a decade you never lived in. To say that the 60s or 70s rocked, but you grew up in the 90s, you don’t know that? You only know what other people have told you and we’re all liars!
guest
@aheartofglitter@xanga - this. 70s…great, 80s…great, 90s still great…late 90s…downward slide into suckdom.
and the sad thing is people had so much hope for the new millennium.
guest
no way, I’d say the 90s were better than the 00s, and hopefully the 10s will rock

The best decade is always the decade someone grew up. Unless they are obsessed with a decade before they were born, but I don’t count that since they are usually loving on only the very best (and absolute worse to be “ironic”) of the decade that remains remembered.

@babybug329@xanga - Or Muerto Television (Muerto being “Dead” in Spanish! LOL)
OMG YES!!! I loved My So Called Life!!! Again, I was just below the age bracket for that too (I was born in 1986 so alot of the it shows for teens on at the time I was between like 4-11 but I loved them anyway, haha!). I did watch the reruns on The-N back when that channel was cool too. We can just say EVERYTHING was good in the 90s. Shit, I even miss my overalls. Who DIDNT rock a pair of those back then?! I had the long ones AND the short ones!!

The nineties were amazing!

Everything died in the late 90s.

Ah, Dazed and Confused. Great movie for life lessons.
“I love those high school girls, man. I get older… they stay the same age.”
guest
@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - Ha! Muerto Television! Just another reason I am glad we do not have cable/dish service. Too bad My So Called Life only stuck around for 1 season, I really believe that people were just not ready for it yet.

70s:awesome, 80s: still awesome, 90s: the best (my childhood), 00: Ok…anything afterwards, downward spiral

It is SO weird – I’ve watched this movie a million times and that theory is always something I think about. In my opinion, the 90s were amazing – we had technology but kids still found ways to amuse themselves, like going outside or playing with our newest toys. Kids today can’t pull themselves away from the DS’s for long enough to enjoy a family dinner. The 2000s were..mediocre, at best. I’m also hoping that the 10s will be amazing.

You are crazy, the 90s were AMAZING! The 00′s sucked!

I love the 1990s and 2000s. I love 90′s mostly because that is when I grew up and the music is just amazing. The 2000s are just so great because they are so absurd. I feel like they draw from just about every time period before, which makes for a hilarious influx of style and attitude that really makes a confusing mess of people trying to define themselves in a period that does not have its own identity.

Why does this matter?
dahlia / 2382 posts
@babybug329@xanga - IT was very popular but stupid Claire Danes didnt want to keep doing the show. People were pissed because there was a huge campaign to save the show AND she won a Golden Globe for it!!

90s were amazing. Hands down.

I wasn’t around to experience them, but I really don’t believe the fifties were boring. I’ll argue that all damn day.

Haha I feel like that’s the most inaccurate statement ever. Most people I know didn’t like the 80′s, if not for any other reason, than because of their hair. Anyway, I can’t agree with the 90′s rocked because I was born in 1991, and didn’t even form memories until, like, 1994, then. I can say that I like a lot of the pop music from the late 90′s, but really, mostly ’98 and ’99, ’00 and ’01. So I can’t really talk. The 00′s sucked because I was a teenager during most of it.
guest
I would say the 00s were awful. I feel like it is summed up by frumpiness and stupid war.

although i wasn’t alive in the 70′s, i know it was awesome because of music.

The best decade is the first decade that all four items existed: deodorant, toothpaste, birth control pills, and sunscreen. So, whenever that was.

90′s were epic, there’s a reason they call it ‘The Golden 90′s’ and the 80′s was more like ‘The Glamorous 80′s’ since it was all about pop culture and obviously glam rock (hair bands with hair inspired by the muppets with sexuality thrown in) and of course the fashion since that’s what made it so ‘glam’! The 70′s was pretty good considering a good bulk of classic rock, psychedelic rock and hard rock all came into that decade along with the first taste of modern rock from the early punk rock bands (whom classic rock lovers claim destroyed rock’n'roll) who revolutionized the rock industry. The 50′s were excellent since rock’n'roll started out then and R&B was actually Rhythm and Blues and not some Hip-Hop copycat, beyond that the U.S. wasn’t so concerned with war any longer since we already came out of WW2 and didn’t care for more. The 00′s sucked balls! That’s all I can say, MTV took a nose dive and a big arrow to the knee. Disney got into a damned conformist (to the 3D CG craze) war with Dreamworks. The gaming industry began to focus on hot title sellers and less on being creative and delivering satisfactory titles anymore. Rock music was either the Columbine Massacre praising Industrial Metal, the Hollywood loving Corporate rock or the sad excuse for dark rock music called Emo rock, complete that with the preppy-rockaholic trends that came out left and right like preppy-metaler (thanks to Kelly Osbourne), preppy-punk (thanks to Avril Lavigne) or the still current preppy-goth (thanks to Twilight) which soils everything cult rock was about. Cartoons were junk with 8 year old animators and 13 year old story writers! A good portion of the music industry was overrun by kids and teens with less grown ups or people in their 20′s making music, otherwise it was rap and hip-hop all the way! The few good things about the 00′s were, horror films were no longer this gore fest but went back to the scary imagination of the old films with J-horror films, anime was at its peak practically as it had its fair share of success in the 90′s, Evanescence helped put a better image on the gothic community after the crap from Columbine tried to smear them, gaming tech got better as did most technology and the return of both the magician and the ventriloquist to popular media (Criss Angel and Jeff Dunham) since the 40′s and earlier. The 0’10′s are still suffering from the disease of last decade but I believe they will improve with time, Disney is finally getting itself back in gear about making compelling films and less trying to outdo Dreamworks, animation in general is improving (be it anime or western animation) making cartoons viable for kids again, health focus is bringing our society back to caring about what we eat and getting exercise back into popularity, the rock industry is suddenly caring about how they produce their music again (less emo and industrial) with the emergence of several notable genres; Scottish rock (aka celtic punk rock), Rebel rock (ska southern metal), Indie rock (well not emerging but doing the rock industry proud), Symphonic Metal (to subside emo at least), Cyber rock (fronted by Kidney Thieves), Doom Metal (if you like sad music, better than Straight-Edge junk like Rise Against even) and of course New Age rock (No not Nickleback they are merely Corporate rock BS, I mean Robert Berry, or sampled songs from The Cranberries and Kings of Leon) which sums it up. Music for this decade in general is moving towards electronica and driving away from 20th Century masterwork with notable revivals of goth, punk, metal, grunge and all others. This decade also has had an improvement in the film industry (besides the remakes and Twilight onslaught), lets not forget the phenomenal box office champion Avatar! Toys are once again no longer dumbed down yet still this doesn’t improve gathering at the table to eat but its a step. Fashions I don’t know what we can say for them but hopefully they are less gaudy and more simplified, we don’t need another 80′s faux-go. Artwork is coming to gain a lime light of its own for this decade and is even increasing in popularity!
But a straight answer suggests that someone to call the 00′s good is brainwashed by the media.

the 90′s saw the birth of teenage drama shows, alternative rock, bill clinton’s presidency, d generation x, tomagotchi, nintendo 64, and forrest gump. the 2000′s consisted of terrorist attacks, a lot of war, a rapidly declining economy, music getting consistently dumber with each release, the movie “eat.pray.love”, and the first black president.
so, only one good thing happened in the 2000′s. the deck is stacked in the 90′s favor. as awesome as her ginger fro was, cynthia’s decade theory failed. especially since the 80′s were dumb, too.

I’m glad I didn’t grow up in the 80ties. These hair styles….I’d regret that.
