Beyonce turned down a $14 million dollar offer to sell Blue Ivy Carter’s baby pictures to a major magazine, and gave the pics away for free on Tumblr instead!
A number of celebrities have previously sold their baby pics for huge sums. According to the New York Daily News:
- “Jessica Alba and her husband, Cash Warren, reportedly pocketed $1.5 million from OK! magazine in 2008 for pics of their daughter, Honour.”
- “Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie received about $14 million from People for shots of twins Vivienne and Knox.”
- “Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony’s twins Max and Emme graced the cover of People for a reported $6 million in 2008.”
Would you sell your baby’s pictures to the magazines for $14 million, and perhaps give some or all of the funds to charity? Or would you post them for free on Tumblr, like Beyonce and Jay Z did?

100% Classy. No one can deny this.

Why shouldn’t she? It’s not like she and Jay aren’t making money on their own. No need to exploit the young one.

they’re probably going to use their baby’s name to start a baby clothing line and advance it to tweens/teens and then a men’s clothing line in the future and make millions upon millions anyway. what’s a mere $14 million to celebrities

I’m sure no one would pay $14 million for my kid’s first pictures, but I am glad they didn’t accept money for the pics of their baby. They make plenty of money already, if they wanted particular charities to have more funds, they should donate on their own.

They have loads of money those two. They don’t need more no less off their baby pics. Tacky. So good choice.

Do they need more money?

I would’ve taken it! But they turned it down and posted their own pics like bosses! #toplevelbosses

Oh come on, they don’t need $14 – it would be greedy of them to take it when they’re already multi-millionaires god knows how many times over. I would take it, because I don’t have a lot of money and it would make a massive difference to my child’s education and upbringing.

I guess she just wants to be treated like a non celebrity mom. My co worker had a baby but no one offered her $14 million for the pictures. Also it’s kind of sinful how her baby pictures are worth $14 million but the major magazine company’s should be investing that money into something that actually benefits people. Good for Beyonce though, one of the many reason’s why she’ll be a good mom and bring up Blue Ivey with good morals

Yay good for her. I was hoping she would do this.

She’s already filthy rich so that’s just pocket change to her. But, me? In my current financial situation? Hell yeah I’d sell the baby pics, it’s not like people don’t already see pics of your kids on facebook and such. *shrug*

Love Beyonce! Such a classy and hardworking woman! I’m glad she did this!

this is obviously a marketing move – they’ve copyrighted the kid’s name already. first they’ll put out baby pics for free, which serve more efficiently than any $14 million dollar ad campaig to get you attached to the little thing. applauding mom & dad for being classy by rejecting the offer always helps the image, too.
and then, once you’re hooked, you’ll probably be willing to shell out a few extra bucks to buy some blue ivy booties for your own little ones… or maybe even a blue ivy fragrance for yourself.

By posting them on tumblr for free, they still own the pictures of their child I believe (unless tumblr has weird policies similar to facebook). They still can force someone not to use photos of their child in this or that. If they would have sold the pictures, they would have had no say in what happened with the copyrights after the fact.
Clearly they don’t need the money, so it makes sense to me. Selling rights to a photo (which I’m assuming this is what was actually being purchases, rather than the photo itself) means no control over when and where it is posted in the future.

oh, how wonderful of them.
I’m sure the parents who couldn’t see their premature babies becausebeyonce and jay z rented out the hospital wing think so, too.
I used to be a big beyonce fan, but how on earth can you still call someone “classy” after the incredibly selfish stunt they pulled before?

^^^ COMPLETELY agree.

Selling the baby picture vs posting them for free on tumbler is two completely different scenario. Selling them is like making money off of your baby. Posting them is just motherly

That must be a really cute baby….
