Madonna told Ryan Seacrestshe was unhappy with MIA’s middle finger gesture during her show. Why?
“I wasn’t happy about it, because for me — I understand it’s kind of punk rock and everything — but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy and positivity. It seemed negative. It’s one of those things that’s such a teenager, kind of, irrelevant thing to do in one respect. But on the other, there was such a feeling of love and unity there. What was the point? It was just out of place.”
That’s a great point, because Madonna has never rebeled like a teenager against institutions. She definitely didn’t give herself stigmata and showcase burning crosses in Like a Prayer. And she definitely didn’t make a video about having sex with a saint (and then feature the song in a concert) that so upset the Catholic Church so much that Cardinal Ersilio Tonino said: “This concert is a blashphemous challenge to the faith and a profanation of the cross. She should be excommunicated.”
Madonna is a classy lady, and would never give people the finger during a concert.

What do you think of Madonna’s take on MIA’s controversy: a fair point, or hypocrisy at its worst?

Meh. I mean, everyone is a hypocrite. She is just saying that at that time and place, such an act wasn’t needed. She isn’t saying she never did it. So… not exactly hypocracy in my book. =)

lol she’s probably just saying that she didn’t tell MIA to do it. Rumors fly.

Irrelevant.

she’s upset that the fact that the superbowl had loads of controversy before and took the safe route for years and that they took a leap of faith allowing madonna to perform that it turned out this way. she’s known for her naughty reputation and probably went through a lot to get that chance to perform.

Seems more like “Madonna unhappy with not getting enough attention post-whatever-she-was-at (I wanna say Superbowl?)” and thus is making this statement.
And look, it worked

@ShirleyD – I agree.

You’re taking it the wrong way. The whole premise of the show was unity, peace and having fun/dancing/enjoying life, w/e. It was not needed. If this was an early Madonna show and she used different songs with different meanings, then she probably wouldn’t have cared. She never said she didn’t do it, just that M.I.A. did it at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Exactly

I didn’t even consider this interpretation of the event, but I almost think it’s thinking about it too much. Think about the context of the event itself, not past history…I get what Madonna means by it being out of place because it was – has anyone gotten a quote of M.I.A.’s statement on why she did it, or was it pretty much self-explanatory? – “fuck you, Madonna”. Did Seacrest even bother getting M.I.A.’s opinion? Was she saying Madonna is a hypocrite for that particular performance? I thought it was positive for the most part.
I feel like most of the young and the hipsters will side with M.I.A. out of loyalty or opinion or something, but yeh, I agree with ShirleyD in that everyone is a hypocrite in some form.

I think it was just the wrong time and place. There could be families watching the superbowl.
guest
But it was on national television. I don’t think Madonna’s concerts are televised to a national audience. That was annoying for M.I.A. To do. Would she do the same in her country?
guest
Wow. Okay, Madonna allowed M.I.A. to perform and to be featured in her album was such a nice gesture… especially since M.I.A. has been inactive for some time. This girl pretty much blew her chance.
guest
Yeah pretty sure madonna doesn’t have an issue with the act of giving a middle finger, just the superbowl where families watch wasn’t the time and place. And who knows before she was a parent she probably wouldn’t have even cared then. I dunno about her concerts though, don’t know if those were broadcast to children and families as well. If they were then yeah she’s a hypocrite, otherwise I think it’s more a timing and situational thing she’s talking about.

I think Madonna is an instrument of the Illuminati and everything she does is designed create awe in people so they will worship her. She preys on the ignorance and stupidity of the masses.
guest
MIA’s action wasn’t controversial, it was just wrong. Things Madonna has done historically have brought out people on both sides, both supporting her and denouncing her. No one supported MIA’s actions, so it wasn’t “controversial” it was just stupid.

@eatdrinkandbemaryy@xanga - Exactly! After Janet Jackson’s nip slip, they took the insane safe route for years and years, and now we FINALLY get a DECENT half time show, and MIA does something like that that could end up giving us a grampa rock band next year, yet again. *sigh*
I personally don’t give a shit whether she sticks her middle finger in the air, flashes her crotch, or flashes a nipple. But it would seem that a large part of America DOES care, for some inane reason, and on that premise, MIA should have let it be.
guest
I think she is just an ass overall. At one point Madonna made sense and was relevant. I mean I see where she is getting at but who the fuck is she to judge? She is far from perfect. And most of the time I feel that these things are rigged. They set up some controversy to get more people to watch and talk about it for days afterwords. And it clearly works.

M.I.A. isn’t even American. I’m sure she doesn’t give a fuck what she does on American National television. Besides, the only people listening to her are probably stoned/drunk hipsters. Well, at least those were the only people listening to her back in 2007 when I was listening to her… If she’s hit the mainstream (I haven’t kept up with her since I stopped smoking weed), well, that kind of shit is going to get to positive attention from the people buying her records, so it’s probably a pretty good PR move on her part…
guest
who the fuck is MIA though?! and madonna is only saying that there is place and time for certain shit.. VMAs is on MTV that network is all about trashy so hey mack with another pop princess is justifiable.. but the super bowl ALL ages watch it even if kids don’t understand the game they’re still going to watch it.. football is an all american past time and all she’s trying to say is THAT one performance is about peace and unity..

You’re comparing MIA giving the finger at a FAMILY oriented event, an event that children are watching, to Madonna doing it at her own rock concert!! You’re kidding me right??? I’m a firm believer in theres a time n place for everything. And I believe Madonna knows this. MIA on the other hand does not.
The Super Bowl is a family friendly event. A rock concert on the other hand, not so much.

@ashleynicole - Madonna just won an award for one of her latest songs. I highly doubt she’s starving for attention.

You’re taking this the wrong way. Madonna was not saying she’s a saint, that she’s never done it. BUT because she went out of her way to make sure it was a safe, positive show after shows from years past, she has every right to be annoyed that MIA did that.
And as a sidenote, I really enjoyed this halftime show. It was MUCH better, even with the MIA antics, than the last few shows.
guest
Doesn’t matter who/what/where/when/why MIA did it, Madonna’s words reek of hypocrisy. Slice of humble pie, coming right up.

I’d like to point out that the things you’ve picture her doing that were “controversial” are a far cry from randomly giving people the finger. seriously, we’re going to argue that she should not have challenged issues like hatred towards inter-racial couples? who cares if she only made out with brittany spears for attention, it still managed to make us think about why that really bothered anyone. my point is just that those were really poor choices in a post about her that’s supposed to be negative

@asrial86@xanga - You know what the funny part is? Everyone who followed M.I.A. through her whole career since she released Arular knew good and well what she was about and how many fucks she really gave. So, regarding her antics, I’d say that Madonna most definitely dropped the ball in not only expecting her to be a clean type of pop star, but to expect her not to admit how many fucks she gave at an event like this. When I saw about MIa in the newspaper, I just silently laughed and shrugged it off.

@mynameisblueskye@xanga - it’s like she didn’t know her at all. Just commenting on someone on TV giving the finger. Really.
