I was talking to a friend about specific cultural and historical events that we remember. Do you remember where you were when any of the following occurred?
- When Michael Jackson died (2009)
- When Princess Diana died (1997)
- When you first found out about the 9/11 attacks (2001)
- When Osama Bin Laden was killed (2011)
When the first plane hit the World Trade Center, I was living in Manhattan and got a call from my parents overseas. I turned on the news, and then looked out the window. A thick cloud of smoke hung over Lower Manhattan. I will never forget it.
Do you remember where you were when any of the above occurred? Are there any other major historical or cultural events seared into your memory?

9/11: I was in Texas History class… those of us who lived in Mexico had to be picked up from school early, as there was a growing fear that all the borders would be closed.
Osama’s death: I was at my house doing homework, when I saw it on FB during one of my procrastination breaks… I proceeded to turn the news on and completely ignore my homework.
Michael Jackson’s death: summer Physics class… summer classes are usually easier (and this one wasn’t the exception) and we were in class when a kid told us he’d just seen it on his phone or laptop or whatever.
Lady Di’s death: no clue.

I only specifically remember where I was during 9/11– the others I found out about afterward. I was in my 8th grade math class when 9/11 happened (ugh, aging myself). The teachers told us vaguely what happened, then refused to turn on the TVs and let us see it.

1) I heard about Michael Jackson dying, on the radio in the car, literally ten minutes after my high school graduation ceremony was over.
2) No idea about Princess Diana’s death; I was only six years old.
3) When 9/11 happened, I was in school at lunch time (5th grade) when a student office monitor came over to pick me up, bring me up to my classroom to pack up my stuff, and took me back to the office where my mother was waiting to bring me home. I had no idea what the hell was going on, but once I got home I saw it on the news. Kids were going home early left and right that day.
4) I was just chillin’ at home when I heard about Osama’s death. I found out by the numerous posts on Xanga.

1. I was living for the moment at my friend’s house and I was downstairs on the computer and with me was her little brother. He turned on the t.v and it was reported that Michael Jackson was dead. He didn’t believe it though. He kept repeating that MJ is dead.
2. No idea. I was born in 1989..too young to remember anything. Probably doing toddler/baby stuff?
3. Stayed home from school and was making bagels and cream cheese to eat. I saw it on t.v. Woke my parents up though.
4. In my room that I share with my fiancé but I was on tumblr. I got the news through tumblr. Amazing.

1. I think I was in summer school when I found out. I had a break in between 2 of my classes when I read about it.
2. I think I was at home when that happened. Don’t really remember too much about that.
3. Found out in my 3rd period class from other kids. Didn’t get to hear much about it until I got home.
4. Was at mom’s house. I was on the Yahoo search engine and it popped up.

1) I heard about it at work, and the lady who told me supposedly worked with that kind of celebrity news stuff, I’m not sure what specifically. But I didn’t believe her at first.
2) I was about five, so I don’t know.
3) It was on the news when I woke up that morning. It was my ninth birthday, and my mom was having major surgery that day, so something that was happening somewhere across the country was far down my list of priorities. I was nine, and had never heard of the World Trade Center and had little grasp of what terrorists were, so I didn’t really know what to do with the information.
4) I was in my dorm room when I saw Twitter explode. I then saw Obama’s address livestreamed on my laptop. Oh technology!

9/11 – I was in middle school choir and we didn’t do anything that day in class except watch the tv
Princess Diana – I don’t remember her dying but I remembered that one of teachers at my elementary school called me Princess Dye cause Dye was my last name at the time… lol
MJ death – I had found out on facebook before we even saw it on the news
Osama death – again found out on facebook before I saw it on the news
other memorable things: Murrah building bombing – lived in Minnesota at the time but I still remember hearing about it and worrying about my little friends that we had left behind in Oklahoma
May 3rd tornado – also an Oklahoma thing that we remember because it was so devastating for people
Joplin tornado – My husband, father-in-law and I were in Indianapolis when it hit Joplin. The reason why I remember it is cause if we hadn’t stopped at Indy we would have be driving right into it.

@fightingXstronger@xanga - You graduated on June 25? That’s so late!
MJ- It was my 18 birthday and me, my mom, and sister were sitting in TGI Fridays and the tvs were exploding with the news.
9/11- I was in 5 grade, and when my sister and I came home from school my mom sat us down and told us there was something we needed to know. My first thought was something had happened to Mrs. Robyn, a family friend of ours who was a flight attendant. Mama looked at me funny and said, “no, but close” and told us what happened. I’ve always had weird feelings like that.
Osama- I was in college, just hanging out of facebook putting off the 3 lesson plans I had to write (the joys of being an elementary education major!) and facebook exploded. I turned on the news and watched the recap.

I only remember where I was when 9/11 happened.

1. I was doing homework, and it became a trending on Twitter. I didn’t believe it at first, but after it was all over the news, I was quite shocked.
2. I was still a child, I have no idea
3. Again, I was still a child.. but I remember my mother panicking, calling and making sure my cousins in the US were safe.
4. I was at my grandmothers house watching TV, the program was interrupted by Breaking News, I freaked out, haha.

How is Michael Jackson included on this list? One of those cases where something doesn’t belong.

1. I was talking to a friend on the phone while I was at band camp. He told me, and I refused to believe him.
2. I was REALLY young, but I vaguely remember being at my grandma’s house.
3. I was in the hospital with appendicitis. All I really recall is that my parents changed the channel on the television so that they could watch the news.
4. Pretty sure I just saw it on Facebook.

1. I was in the car on the way to a soccer game when it was breaking news. We were all so shocked we lost that game… it was our only loss during the season.
2. Too young to remember.
3. I was in my fourth grade class when my teacher came in and announced what happened.
4. In the library at college working on my International Political Economy research paper. Caught it as news broke.

1) I was at my ex-boyfriend’s house – I found it out on Facebook.
2) I was at home watching kids TV (I was 8 or 9) and it came through as breaking news. I remember telling my parents and them not believing me!
3) I was walking through the front door after school and my parents were sat on the sofa in shock watching it on the news.
4) I saw it on Facebook.

When Michael Jackson died, I was on a plane that had just landed in Miami. The first text I got when I turned my phone on from my best friend, telling me about M.J. I didn’t believe her until I got off the plane; EVERYONE was just standing at baggage claim, looking at the televisions on the walls. Everyone was in shock. It was a really, really sad moment.
9/11, I was in fifth grade. My mom drove me to school and couldn’t even talk. At school, my teacher had us make red, white, and blue cards with words of hope for the people in NYC. Later I found out that my aunt and godfather, who live in NYC, hadn’t been harmed during the attacks, but my mom was so shaken up that my dad had to explain things to me. She was a wreck.
I don’t remember where I was when Princess Diana died. I think I was six. When Osama was killed, I was in my friend’s dorm; he was on Facebook and started freaking out, telling me that Osama had been pronounced dead.
guest
I remember all of them except Osama, but then I never really cared about Osama or if he lived or died. I probably didn’t even find out about him until a week or two after he died. I would probably add first black president to historical things that should be remembered during my life time as well.

When MJ died, I was sitting in my living room, on the couch. I was about to make dinner, but had been following CNN reports that Michael Jackson had just been rushed to the hospital…then they were working on his heart…then they working on his brain…and then he was gone. It took a few minutes for me to compute…like, wtf, how does Michael Jackson die? It just didn’t seem real.
When Princess Diana died, I was in a hotel room in Virginia Beach on vacation with my family. I was really young, so all I remember is lying in bed and peeking out from under the covers at the screen to hear more about a horrible car crash that had taken place. I really didn’t even know who Princess Diana was at the time.
When I heard about 9/11, I was sick, so I didn’t go to school. I was in my parents’ dining room watching VH1, and all of a sudden CNN coverage came on in place of it, and I remember seeing clouds of smoke all over the screen. At first, I thought a bunch of bombs had gone off or something, but then I called my mom and she told me what happened. For some reason it just didn’t hit me right away.

1) I was at work and in the stock room when my boyfriend texted me that Michael Jackson had died. Then, my coworkers got into a debate as to whether it was a rumor or not, because other people had heard different things.
2) I don’t remember Princess Diana dying because I was only seven at the time, but I do remember my mom being extremely sad.
3) I was in 5th grade and sitting in my classroom when one kid got called down to the office. Of course, everyone went “Oooooooohhh!” thinking that kid was in trouble, because that’s what everyone did when people got called to the office. Then, one by one, other kids started getting pulled out of class. I thought it was weird. Soon I got called down to the office for an early dismissal, too. When I got there, there were a TON of parents crammed into the office trying to get their kids out of school. My mom was crying, and I asked her what was wrong. She replied, “I think we’re going to war.”
4) I actually don’t specifically remember bin Laden’s death. I remember seeing it on Twitter, actually, and spent much of the day talking to my boyfriend and checking Reuters and CNN to confirm. I do, however, specifically remember the riots in College Park after it was confirmed that he was dead.

When Michael Jackson died (2009)—- I was in my room, there was a severe thunderstorm warning and I was on my computer. I was watching TV (Jeopardy) and all of a sudden an announcement came on that Michael Jackson died. I was in shock and I started googling all the news I could about it.
When Princess Diana died (1997)—– I was 7 years old so I don’t remember a whole lot. It was my mom’s cousin’s wedding and we heard the news. I just remember my mom telling me who Princess Diana was and that she died in a car crash.
When you first found out about the 9/11 attacks (2001)—- I was in 6th grade sitting in orchestra. My teacher tells us that a plane crashed into the twin towers in New York. Some kids laughed nervously and they got yelled at (we were so young though!) Then my history teacher told us what a terrorist attack was and why they did it and who might have done it (bin laden). he was correct. a lot of people went home that day from school. i came home and watched a lot of news with my mom.
When Osama Bin Laden was killed (2011)—- that was last year (my junior year of college). I was writing a political science paper about conservatism in america (ironic) and i looked on facebook and there were sooo many statuses about him being killed. Uhhhh what?!?!? I looked online and sure enough it was no joke.

When Michael Jackson died (2009)- don’t remember, because i really didn’t care. why is he even on the list?
When Princess Diana died (1997)- i vaguely remember being at home and watching the news coverage with my mom.
When you first found out about the 9/11 attacks (2001)- i was in history class. the first thing we heard was that planes were attacking NYC. this made us all think the Russians were bombing us. i had a Muslim friend, and i immediately became concerned for how she’d be treated after all of this. but her family didn’t require wearing the hijab, so i think very few people realized she was Muslim.
When Osama Bin Laden was killed (2011)- i caught the speech President Obama gave.

When Michael Jackson died (2009) – I was in my room at my parent’s house (I had just moved back from out of state) and a friend texted me “RIP Michael Jackson.” I didn’t believe it until I turned on the news. Sidenote: It was also my birthday. So now, every birthday is bittersweet because I am a HUGE MJ fan.

When Princess Diana died (1997) – I can’t remember, to be honest. I think we were in South Korea, though.

When you first found out about the 9/11 attacks (2001) – I was on the bus going to school, falling asleep with my headphones in listening to the radio. I kept hearing the DJ say, “Oh no. Oh, my God. Oh, no!” Then I realized the second tower was hit. We didn’t have school that day, we just watched the day’s events on the news in the auditoriums. A friend of mine was actually pulled out of school because her cousins were in the plane that hit the second tower.

When Osama Bin Laden was killed (2011) – We were at a BBQ with friends, catching up, when, yet again, a friend texted me the news. Then, a few moments after, my friend’s wife announced that she was expecting another child. It was a double celebration! LOL

4. I have no idea, it was on the internet.

I heard vague news of MJ, and I was 5 when Princess Diana died, so no, I don’t remember that. I was actually outside picking flowers when my mom came out and told me about 9/11. I was in Uganda, with a rare chance to check my e-mail when saw about Bin Laden.

Michael Jackson: I was at pre-prom! Farrah Fawcett died earlier that day, while I was still at home. And Billy Mays died three days later, which I found out right after my high school graduation ceremony.
9/11: I was in 5th grade and in my school district’s honors class. All the kids from all the different schools were bused to one school for our class, and when we got there our teacher was completely ashen faced and told us the Twin Towers were on fire.
Osama bin Laden: I’d just gotten out of the shower, lmao. I hopped onto Twitter and found out. Super weird, because when I’d left it 45 minutes earlier everything was normal!

I somehow missed it on the tv, and my friend told me when we got in the taxi. I didn’t really believe it until I was able to get to school and confirm it on the internet.

When Michael Jackson died I remember I found out while shopping at Charlotte Russe and my friend texted me.
I’m not sure because I was only 7 but I think I was watching the news with my parents when Princess Diana died.
When I found out about the 9/11, I was in 6th grade english class. My teacher’s husband’s company had a branch in one of the towers and some of his co-workers were there.
When Osama Bin Laden was killed I was in my bed on Facebook when my newsfeed started blowing up about it.
And last night when Whitney Houston died I was in Philly at the Temple-Xavier basketball game.

1. When Michael Jackson died (2009) – My parents were both at work so I was home alone. I pulled up Yahoo and saw the ”Breaking News” headline. I didn’t want to believe that it was true, so I turned on the TV to see if more than one report of it was running, and sure enough it was true. I cried for what seemed like forever (I’m a very big fan of his).
2. When Princess Diana died (1997) – Don’t remember, I was only 5 or 6 at the time.
3. When you first found out about the 9/11 attacks (2001) – I was in fourth grade. I remember someone from the office coming and telling my teacher something, but I didn’t find out what until my dad picked me up from school and told me.
4. When Osama Bin Laden was killed (2011) – I’d just come in from dinner with my boyfriend and I logged onto the computer as always, and saw the headline on Yahoo. Of course then I turned on the TV and watched as everything played out.

3. Woke up and went into the computer room to find the news coming over some Internet news station. Only thing I remember hearing was something along the lines of “the big one”

When Michael Jackson died (2009) : I was at firehouse subs in Columbus, Georgia, with my parents.
When Princess Diana died (1997) I was in the 2nd grade, so I don’t remember. Judging from the time it happened I was probably at home being a normal, care-free 7 year old.
When you first found out about the 9/11 attacks (2001) I was in my 6th grade Reading class. I remember the kid behind me laughing. None of us really understand what was going on. My teacher was in tears. I think she laid into the kid that was laughing, and then we all shut up because we finally realized that even if we didn’t fully understand, something serious was happening.
When Osama Bin Laden was killed (2011) I should probably remember this, but I don’t.
