Scientists have been debating an important question: should you put a nose in your smiley, like this?
Or should you forgo the nose, and have your smileys look like this.
Smiley scientists have divided into two schools of thought here: the Nosey Smilers and the Noseless Smilers.
There is vigorous debate between these two schools, with many subtleties emerging in their debate:
- Some Noseless Smilers reject hyphenated noses, but are somehow ok with Big Noses. :O)
- Other Smilers are less focused on the nose, and more on the mouth. These smilers reject the parenthesis-smile and replace it with an alternative like a tongue. :p
- A splinter group of Smilers disdain the use of a semi-colon for the eyes, and prefer an equal sign instead. =) This is a source of great controversy in the smiley community.
- Please note that =-) is not a commonly accepted option. Most Nosey Smilers and Noseless Smilers agree that equal signs and hyphens can NOT be combined in a smiley. This is a rare point of agreement in an otherwise controversial field.
- Some smileys just look best with a Nose. :-/ Without a nose, that would look ridiculous. :/
Do you put a nose in your smiley?
Or do you skip the nose and go straight from the eyes to the smile.

@MassiveVortex@xanga - Shh, it’s filler to distract those of us who are single so that we do not focus on said alone-ness.
And it did not work.

Personally I prefer my smileys with must aches

@QuantumStorm@xanga - Whaa?
Reading this caused this quote to pop up in my head: “To read makes our speaking English good.” Frilly words are not for the internets!

For me, “: -)” means a quick+true grin, and “=)” means a smile with my eyes more open, like a ‘sweet moment’-kind of smile.
I also sort of generally deny falling into the asian stereotype of using smileys often, lol. So when I do, I like to add the nose to imply that I’m a rare user. The “=)” smiley is an exception since it’d look a bit much as “=-).”
ALSO! I use “:O)” to imply sarcasm in remarks with silliness/dry humor.
(How ridiculous do I come off here?)

“… This is a source of great controversy in the smiley community.” Lol, seriously? Please allow me to respond to this statement with a smiley consisting of two hyphens separated by a period: -.-
guest
Lots of my friends do the inverted smiley (:

I type the nose part. I guess now is the time to mention that it annoys me when I see people typing the mouth before the eyes. For example: (: I believe the eyes should always go before the mouth. : -)

Im just more of a
than a
. And I dont think :\ looks bad, I use that all the time, haha.

no noses!

Lol never.. never with the noses!!!!

@ashleynicole - here, here! O_o Despite the oddness of this particular debate, I’ll it admit that it is a great distraction ^_^. Plus, I love my smileys with no noses
.

Seriously? Wow! I would not of known you could actually debate smilies! But I guess anyone could debate anything, for that matter. (: This really makes me want to lol! In all goodness, of course. Back in the day, I made my smilies with an “o” or “0.” Still do occasionally.. I liked them because they were different.. Then I went on to make them like this. C: lol Because they’re different also. Now, I just make them the plain normal way usually. Faster! Or just use my phone’s built in smilies. Which is even faster! (: Adding my two cents. Thankyou for the option! And for bringing the subject of smilies up. Made my day! Because I often admit to being a tad bit obsessed with my smilies!! I overuse them! But I don’t really care! (: They’re much, much better than frownies! ANY day. The phrase goes, “Say it with a smile.” And comes in very, very handy when telling someone how you feel and how they, the person, makes you smile! I love smilies! Plain and simple. (: <–See? Very much, proven.. he he

no nose, for some reason I feel like Its too much of an effort to add the nose even though its only one extra button. =)

@Gerry7@xanga - Until you discuss its distracting presence, since it then reminds you what you are being distracted from

Noses and ears were always my least favourite part of human faces while growing up drawing. I still don’t like them. c: <– I find this little noseless smile way cuter than either

there is only ONE person i know that would use the nose and it bugs the crap outta me

Noseless, always noseless. It doesn’t matter if it’s
or
or :/, it has to be noseless for me
guest
No noses, for sure. They distract from the cuteness of the smiley.

I always skip the nose! Another extremity I used to skip as a kid was ears. I would draw people without ears all the time, which I now find hilarious.

:/ is not a smiley. i use tthat when i’m sad

I never liked the sideways smileys, plus they never seemed accurate enough. So I always just use ^_^-_- ~_~ *_* etc as my smileys. The one sideways one I do use is =\ when I have no clue what to say but that’s mainly just cuz the straight up ones don’t have a sideways mouth that matches mine when I do that. But yeah none of those have noses…so no noses.

less is more, allways

I use noses.

I flip all of my smileys. And sometimes I use ^-^ or ;O; or [: or ╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

On Xanga I use noseless smileys when I am more shy or reserved or feel like the other person finds the pictures that appear ridiculous. Otherwise I use the smieys with the nose, because it comes closer to the look of an actual face. even though it depends on the type of smiley. YAY FOR NOSES!!!!!
(wow I even make log comments on posts about smiley noses)

This has got to be the most inane post I’ve ever read on lovelyish. Oh well, at least it’s a completely innocent, drama and stupidity free post. I don’t use noses on my smileys.

What a funny post! LOL Well I vary with nose and noseless smilies. Depends if I’m not too lazy to type the nose, but usually noseless. I’ll do it with a nose of if it’s like this
guest
I just type whatever and what you end up with is what you get. @Cho_0705@xanga - That’s great!
