It’s Valentine’s season, which means that we’re going to be assaulted with the colors pink, white and red for the next six days. The standard uniform for February 14 is also going to include those hues, and if you go out to dinner expect to be predictably surrounded by them. Why not try parting the red sea for your own Valentine’s plans? Follow the cut to see some of my alternative color ideas for the holiday.

SoCal Bungalow Dress in Purple, $49.99 from ModCloth

1. Purple. While this color may not signify fiery passion, it certainly has a more mysterious charm. You may be surrounded by ladies trying to look sultry in red, but wearing purple will make you stand out and remind your date of a romantic twilight sky.

ASOS Knitted Dress With Roll Neck Collar, $34.91 from Asos

2. Orange.
If you still want to show off your fiery side on Valentine’s, go with an orange frock (which seems a bit more literal in that sense, anyways). Orange is fun and flirty, while still giving off a bit of spark.

Ali & Kris Dress, Strapless Sweetheart Leopard Printed Mini, $17.99 from Macy’s

3. Animal print.
While not exactly a color, animal print is a great alternative to red. I don’t need to go into the whole “wild thing” spiel, do I? This look can go from cute to tacky pretty easily, so be sure to keep your accessories and makeup simple.

One Shoulder Lace Dress, $39.99 from The Limited
.
Black. Red may be “look at me!” sexy, but we all know black is the classic go-to color for vamps. Spice it up with some colored accessories, or just keep things mysterious with an all-black ensemble.

Galaxy Dress, $116.38 from Asos

5. Galaxy print. This may seem a bit out-there (pun intended), but I can guarantee you that few others will be rocking a space print dress on the 14th. This particular wrap dress has a flattering fit, and the print will make you look like a mystical goddess!
