Apparently Karl Lagerfeld feels he has the right to body snark for no reason, as evidenced in an interview with Metro Paris. Check out some of his mean (and bizarre) quotes after the cut!
Lagerfeld started off by stating the obvious, that Adele is “the thing at the moment.” Seems like a fair statement, and one he’s qualified to make. If only he had stopped there. Instead Karl decided to throw in some complimentary gems about the talented singer, saying that, “she is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice.” It doesn’t count as an insult if you follow it up with two compliments, right?
Karl also has another head-scratching moment in the interview, where he talks about how M.I.A.’s Super Bowl finger wasn’t “the best behavior.” Which seems like a valid opinion, but things turn strange when he directly follows the statement with, “People in magazines are 50 percent bimbo and 50 percent pregnant women.” Perhaps some important segue was lost in translation? I hope so. [via Jezebel]
What do you think of Karl’s comments?

“Fat” is not an insult, how you use it is. It’s not wrong to be fat, but when you say someone is “too fat” or use it in a crude and insulting form; that is when it is wrong. Telling someone they’re not perfect the way they are; that’s wrong.
She’s lovely.
guest
People do this all the time with plus size girls. They give half compliments. I suppose people some how rationalize it to make it seem appropriate because they usually end on the positive note, but I find it quite amusing, really. I personally, think that we should all start doing this with each other.
“You’re so lazy, but you have a lovely complexion.” or “You have the worst fashion sense ever, but at least you bathe!”
Do you see how the examples above have nothing to do with anything?
Okay then.

I love Adele and I think she looks great. To hell with what Karl thinks.

Honestly, coming from Karl Lagerfeld, I expected much worse.

So she is a bit fat. Is there something wrong with making such a comment? People say all sorts of things about people all the time. People are allowed to say what they want, even if it’s negative…I guess..what’s the big deal? He said it a matter of fact manner too. Didn’t say she was a fat pig or something. A bit fat = A bit overweight. Get over it.
rose / 937 posts
@Kittyluve@xanga - Yeah. It’s maybe not nice to say that, but I didn’t actually think anything bad of these quotes. Plus, could very well be that you need context to understand where he is coming from and what these quotes really signify. Without context you’ve just got a mish-mash of words.
And to be completely honest, Adele does look like she could stand to lose some weight, or at least work out. She doesn’t need to be a size 2, but from what I’ve seen of a few of her live performances on TV/online she doesn’t seem to move around much when she’s performing, she smokes, and she’s heavier. Fact of the matter is that having a significant amount of extra weight often leads to health implications.
guest
He’s a high-fashion designer…what else would you expect?
Yes it’s not an excuse, but it wasn’t that brutal.
guest
Get over it. She’s not skinny and by most people, she would be considered fat. She’s a singer not an aspiring model so this statement doesn’t even matter.
guest
REMEMBER WHEN KARL LAGERFELD WAS A FATTY? I DO TOO.
ranunculus / 3457 posts
Look folks, I LOVE Adele, she’s gorgeous, great voice. But the TRUTH is that she’s fat. She carries it well, and manages to look gorgeous, certainly breaking that whole fat people = ugly thing, but she is fat. Loving a singer/celeb doesn’t mean you’ll not notice their imperfections… no one’s perfect, and if the worst thing about Adele is that she’s fat, she’s doing very very well.
guest
Who gives a shit what she looks like. I play her songs to hear her sing.
guest
Who? Never heard of him. Irrelevant comment. Moving on.
guest
Of course he said that. Karl Lagerfeld has never been shy about bashing fat people.
I mean, it’s true. Adele is pretty and talented, but she is a little fat. It’s better than a lot of things other people might say.
guest
@thecolourofwater@xanga - …but you’ve heard of Adele?
guest
Well, he’s right. She is overweight. What’s the problem? Can’t we tell the truth about people anymore?
guest
That guy doesn’t even look HUMAN!!!!! How does he have the right to speak about ANYONE!?
guest
@daydreams_nightmares@xanga - Yeah we can but I am so tired of people with flaws speaking on others. When you become a celeb, you are examined with a fine toothed comb I get that but many of these people talking badly need to look at themselves.
guest
@Jade_Orchid@xanga - yeah, but it is part of being in the limelight. Your body will get scrutinised. Obviously nobody’s perfect, but I just don’t like it when it’s deemed “politically incorrect” to point out the truth about someone just because that truth is “bad”.

This is one of the things wrong with our society, we’re so sensitive. Hate to break it to you, but she is fat.
guest
Actually I expected worse coming from Karl Lagerfeld. Here’s what I have to say to him: “Karl, you’re a completely pompous ass, but you’re such a great designer!” No, what he said wasn’t terrible, but I can say from firsthand experience that it gets REALLY FUCKING OLD to always know that people’s compliments are tempered with a sense of “yeah, but she’s fat.” It’s like people are saying well, at least you have other redeeming qualities to make up for the fatness, thank God for that.
guest
@Xbeautifully_broken_downX@xanga - Yes, thank-you! Perhaps if we were all to do it with everyone we would realize how rude it is. Yeah there’s the “we can all state our opinion, who cares, get over it blah blah blah” but what I don’t understand is why people feel the NEED to say it in the first place. Just don’t say it! Are you doing anybody any good by pointing out someone’s flaws? No. So maybe when we feel the urge to insult we should just keep our mouths shut. But that’s just my opinion. It seems that wanting to be a nice person has gone by the wayside.
guest
No idea who HE is, but I have heard of and Adele and bought her album. So. There you go, seems like her weight isn’t messing with her bank account.
guest
I don’t find it insulting how he said it .I think if you use fat as in insult, because in the context it means worthless or dispicable, it’s terrible. (like “omg I am such a fucking FATASS I ate a WHOLE bagel, I end up like these obese people!”) But I’m about her size and I’m overweight and I know I *AM* a little too fat actually. I find it annoying when people think they have to comment one everyones looks in general, but then again he’s a designer, and all in all he just described her. She IS a little overweight and she has a beautiful face. I don’t hear that she’s ugly or something in that sentence.
orchid / 109 posts
Noooo, everyone should strive to be her size -.-
guest
@hot_metalhead@xanga - Totally agree!
guest
@npr32486@xanga - Cant tell if your being sarcastic or not… lol..
I think she looks fine the way she is… I never thought she was fat, sure she is curvy but whats wrong with that? Why does everyone expect people to be super skinny? Thats not how the world is like.
guest
Adele is not skinny, but that doesn’t make her any less of a person. it’s pretty absurd for a fashion designer to criticize someone who isn’t even part of the fashion industry… most people who are not involved in modeling/fashion could really give a fuck about what ‘karl’ has to say. seriously, i wish he’d just stfu and leave people alone. his job is to design clothing, not insult people.
daisy / 743 posts
She’s a little too unhappy also. (And this is not about her weight!)
He is right about pop culture.
guest
She is fat, duh
guest
Actually, if Adele were not as padded as she is, her resonance may not be the same. Basically, if she WERE to become concerned about her weight and start working out or whatever, she’d be risking her amazing voice. Barbra Streisand refused to “fix” her nose for that exact same reason.
guest
Oh how cruel
But I love Karl Lagerfeld Sun, moon and stars
I think is the best perfume ever.

@Jade_Orchid@xanga - So… you are tired of every single person the earth making comments about others’ flaws?
It’s human nature to point out a person’s flaws before the good. If you are friends with someone who smells really bad but is also super funny and sweet and intelligent and has great taste in music, you are likely to point out that he smells when you are talking about him with others. I do this all the time with friends – it’s not because I secretly hate them and think I’m better than them, the negative stuff just pops out. We consistently bring forth the negative in situations far more than the positive, not just with humans. And I think that people can clearly see that Adele needs to get in shape. I’m not going to say that my friend who is obese doesn’t need to lose weight just because I think she’s a super nice person and I am happy to be her friend. So why deny that a celeb needs to lose weight (by normal-people standards) when a comment about said celeb’s weight is made? We don’t seem to get as bitchy about it when it comes to people commenting on how skinny someone is and that they need to gain weight. Why the bias?
rose / 937 posts
@bbanmen420@xanga - She’s not curvy though. I don’t think so at least. Imo, curvy means that your body shape is curved. She carries visible excess weight on her. So do I, which is why I don’t consider myself curvy but chubby. When I got down to about 140 and my stomach was almost flat – along with having significantly more muscle tone than I have now, which I am building up again – I considered myself curvy because you could clearly see that my body shape was curved instead of just straight lines. Curvy is now used more to be politically correct when defining someone who would actually be labelled fat in a less sensitive society. Looking at my bone structure underneath my excess weight, I know that once I get in shape I will have a curvy body, but I’ll also have a fit body without excess weight.

@FoxFire12@xanga - “I wasn’t sure, so I contacted Victoria Hansen, Principal Instructor in Voice at Colorado College. She said weight loss can definitely change things when it comes to singing. “It makes sense that you would gain ease in breathing,” said Hansen. “Fatty tissue in the Viscera (The internal organs of the body, specifically those within the chest) can impede the descent of the diaphragm; therefore less fatty tissue will increase the diaphragmatic movement.”
Hansen said I’m also helping my voice because my lifestyle change has me eating smaller portions which “reduces gastric acid that can cause reflux (GERD), a singer’s nightmare because it can damage the vocal folds and airways.”"

Too fat for what? To have a voice coming out of her? For a 78-year-old man to want to put his penis inside of her? When a 78-year-old man does not want to put his penis inside of you, it is more win than lose.
guest
well, i think karl is an ass.
guest
Being a fashion designer does not give a person the excuse to be a jerk.
guest
@blackspiders@xanga - Of course. But her weight doesn’t effect me, nor does it concern me. It’s her business and she would still be a wonderful artist despite her weight. I don’t care what this man has to say.
I mean, if he has a problem with who she is, why take any notice of her at all?
guest
he’s a diva
so what did they expect from him
he’s the outlandish mel gibson of fashion designers
it doesn’t excuse his behavior but I think karl is funny looking and talks funny:D he’s the white kanye west or kanye is the black karl
either way, attention hos
I can’t stand her raspy voice. it sounds like someone is stepping on her toes when she’s singing.
guest
yea she’t not a size 0 but so the hell what?
whose this old fart anyway?
guest
I think he meant it as insult. If Adele was ‘skinny’ he wouldn’t comment about her weight or looks. He needs to get over himself fast. Otherwise his words are going to weigh him down.
guest
@Jade_Orchid@xanga - Everyone has flaws, therefore anyone can say anything/have their own opinion about anyone.
guest
That statement, from start to finish, is not an insult, it’s a fact.
guest
Yes, she’s overweight or fat. She knows this. It didn’t really need to be said. The only reason it was said was to insult her.
Also, if he had said that she was underweight, most of the women on this site would be all up in arms complaining that people are harassing skinny people too much, instead of defending this man’s insult.
Neither should be said. Because even if she is too skinny or fat, it’s nobody’s business, and to say something about it is just to be cruel.

I think she’s fat. But..so what?
guest
@ashleynicole - No bias. I never commented on someone being too skinny. Some people are naturally slim and some are naturally thick but of course it being hollywood you have to be a particular size. We are a visually obsessed nation and I am pretty sure we are not the only ones. We think it is okay to attack the large but we also attack the very slim at an even more vicious rate.
As humans we do this. Is it wrong? Partially. I just figured I would say something this time because when I read this entry, I honestly rolled my eyes. I guess we have to point out things right? It was not, “Oh, Adele is pretty.” he instantly went for the size. But, who judges that guy? No one because he is paid to judge.
I got a lot of slack on what I said and I do not take it back. Hollywood is viewed with a microscope but they also are rich. So, I guess you have to weigh what you want to be- a lay person who can eat at Krispy Kreme everyday, work out if you like and blog and dream or be in Hollywood where you have to work out, get drugs free to deal with all the pressure and have loads of money. Hmmmm. . . what to choose.
guest
@AbnormalButSane@xanga - I agree.
guest
Vocal talent isnt just innate. It requires amazing abdominal strength!!
Even though she has some excess fat, it would be ignorant to assume that with a voice like hers she isnt more in shape than a lot would think.
rose / 937 posts
@Jade_Orchid@xanga - Chances are you’ve likely had these thoughts without even realizing it, even if you weren’t even thinking anything in a negative tone/mood. It’s simply a natural human behaviour and I don’t think anyone can say that they’ve truly never thought of someone in some form of negative term.
And I’m pretty sure plenty of people judge him. No one has ever been able to avoid judgement of any kind. He wasn’t making these comments to purposefully attack her and it was likely just something that came out. Yes, it’s not really nice to say shit like this, but it happens. He was simply describing her.
How about a third option: Choose to live healthy regardless of your socio-economic background. I am not a movie star and yet I put in real effort to attain a healthy body. Not just so that I feel comfortable with my appearance more so than I did when I was heavier but also so that I can FEEL better and can have more energy to do things that I wouldn’t have been able to do before starting university. There are a lot of celebs who choose to work out not just to assist in their ability to get work but also because living a healthier lifestyle truly feels better. And you don’t need to take drugs to alleviate that pressure – just eat a healthy diet and exercise appropriately. You don’t need to be a celeb to do either of those.
@undeclared1@xanga - My sister takes vocal lessons and can sing operatic music. And yet when she started (and her voice was about the same then as it is now), she was not in shape. At all. No one in my family was.

Well, she is pretty fat.
guest
Adele can eat, drink, or smoke whatever she wants. She’s a gorgeous fucking goddess.
guest
@ashleynicole - Yeah and she probably doesn’t practice as much as Adele….
This chick probably does vocal exercises 24/7; she’s gonna have a lot of abdominal muscle, even if you can’t see it.
guest
he is such an asshole.for saying adeles too fat.it shouldnt matter how heavy someone is.shes gorgeous the way she is and has an amazing voice.when she opens her mouth.shes awesome to me.wouldnt you all agree.send feedback to my blog.thanks so much.
