This may seriously be one of the best things I’ve ever heard. Maybe, it’s because prior to typing this I just burnt my mouth on a scorchin’ hot cup of Dunkin Donuts joe, or maybe it’s because it’s a damn good idea. Seriously a cup of hot chocolate, tea, coffee can really do the trick when having to brave the cold but there is nothing worse than taking that first sip and burning your mouth. It’s the worst. Which is why the Smart Lid may quickly become one of my most needed investments.
So what does it do? Well, besides saving your tongue and mouth from some not so pleasant burns, it helps you avoid unwanted spills too. Now that we think about it, it’s kinda crazy how many issues we can have with a cup of coffee. Anyway, when you put the smart lid on your cup it does two things. First, it tells you if the lid is on tight. If the part where the lid and the cup meet is brown, it means you’re good to go and the worries you used to have of unwanted leaks and spills are no more. Second, it tells you if it’s time to take that first sip. We all know that red usually means stop right? Well, the Smart Lid is no exception. If your top turns red, you may want to wait a few minutes before taking that first sip. Your mouth will appreciate it. [via Cnet.com]
Sample packs go for about $8.95 if you want to try ‘em out and are available in brown (which turns to red) and pale green (which turns to white). Hey, the point of a cup of anything is to warm us up, help get our day started and relax a little. Thanks to the Smart Lid, you can.
Would you Lovelies purchase some of them? Do you wish any local coffee shops by you would, too?

lol I like it when my coffee burns my tongue. In fact, I order it extra hot.

Damn you, website, you ate my comment.
The gist of what I originally wrote: use your hands to feel whether it’s still hot (feel the sides and/or hold hand above the liquid to see if you can feel the heat) and use your eyes to see if it’s steamy. And then leave the lid off if you are sitting around so that it can cool off. If you can’t do that (such as for driving) then pop in 1-2 ice cubes to cool it down.

today i waited too long for my coffee to cool down so it was cold by the time i drank it so this would be awesome…if it were reusable.

For some reason, I always wait too long for my coffee to cool down.

9 bucks though?!

I usually wait 15min before taking the first sip. Not much of a hot drink drinker anyway. Cool idea though.

I’ve had this issue with chai from this one coffee place. I think it’s a cool idea, and wouldn’t complain if it started to be used by coffee places.
Honestly, this might become the norm, just like the coffee sleeves. Maybe if the product/company catches on, they can start making durable mugs that do the same thing and be sold to the customer for resale in coffee shop.
@CrAdLe2daGrAve@xanga - For 12 cups and lids. Still pricey, but the price will go down a lot once they have the customer demand to mass produce.

I always just take the top off until it reaches a manageable temperature, and then put it back on. Takes maybe 5 minutes.

This sounds amazing!!
