A little late in the winter to go dark?  Absolutely not.  Darker colors are a result of the surface in question absorbing more electromagnetic radiation when compared to lighter colors.  This results in a comparatively higher retention of heat, which just might be the result he was going for.

Also, he’s going through puberty. Most people- particularly males start naturally getting darker hair through adolescence. I think it’s the influence of testosterone.
