I have a genuine respect for people who don’t take themselves too seriously. Add in the spotlight of being a celebrity, and it turns into straight up admiration. Continue adding the fact that they are in one of my favorite Christmas movies ever Elf, and I was sold. She has the type of voice that seems out of place in a generation filled with auto-tune, and not only makes it work, but makes no apologies for it.  I mean seriously, how great was her rendition of “Baby, It’s Called Outside?” Loved it. Later finding out that she’s part of the band She & Him, it all came together–somebody that talented clearly had to have an album out there. As if that wasn’t enough, she then starred in one of my favorite movies ever, period: 500 Days of Summer

Not only did Zooey and co-star Joseph Gordon Levitt break the mold for Romance movies, she broke the mold of how women are portrayed (even if just in this one film). Instead of being the “damsel in distress” or the “love-sick sap” she played a girl who didn’t need to define what her relationship was or wasn’t–she just wanted to enjoy her life. To me, she did this flawlessly. Granted, I’m kind of biased because I try and live my life by that same motto, she was still able to make me believe her emotions and question them all at the same time. In a society where romance is so often depicted from the female perspective, she was able to give the “standard” and us watching, something else to think about.

One of the final things completely solidified my love for Zooey is her latest TV show New Girl where she plays Jess. While a lot of people aren’t fans, I think the show is pure genius and that she is simply a-dork-able. It may say a lot about me, but some of her antics are things I would, or admittedly have done. Some, not all. Most of us have an inner dork, we just rarely let it out. Thankfully Deschanel does it every Tuesday night. For her character, simple is better, and she proves it by simply being this weird yet loveable character. Case in point: thinking going to milk cows with her bucket is sexy. There’s something so off about her, that it ends up being dead on; she somehow pulls it off. Plus, her chemistry with Nick, Winston and Schmidt, is kind of hard not to love and makes me want to move in with some of my guy friends. OK, maybe just for a day, but still.

Plus, she has her own theme song. Who wouldn’t love to have that?

How do you guys feel about Zooey? Any favorite movies? What would your theme song be?
