This morning I lifted off to later land in Florida. MAN. MUCH WARMER! Anyway, I’m a girl who digs maxin’ and relaxin’ while munching free pretzels and zoning out, staring at clouds. However, one quick look around my cabin suggested my fellow passengers perhaps did not share this weeeeeeee kind of attitude. That’s when I remembered, Oh yeah, many people have a fear of flying. Do you?
As a generally neurotic person, I feel surprised at my ease while flying. Running down hills, hamburgers and the dark all wreck my nerves, but gliding through the air, thousands of feet from the safe ground doesn’t faze me at all. Weird.
Are you or have you ever feared flying? How do you conquer your nerves?

I don’t fear flying, I’m amazed by it. I sit in a chair, thousands of feet in the air, and get from one place to another distant one. How about that?

Nope, people who are afraid to fly are probably just afraid of dying in general. Any way you look at it, you’re putting your life in the hands of the pilot and everyone involved in making that plane function properly. There’s not much you can do once you’re on it and in the air, so once you come to terms with that, you might as well relax. This applies to pretty much anything you’re not in control of, e.g., being a passenger in a car, even driving a car because everyone else can be stupid, getting on a roller coaster or related ride, getting on a boat, etc.
It might be a morbid way of looking at it, but that doesn’t make it any less true.

Nah, not even when there’s a lot of turbulence. Actually, that’s like the best part of flying, it’s kind of an awesome feeling ahaha. I’m weird, don’t mind me

I enjoy flying. I have absolutely no fear of flying. Both my parents are licensed pilots. My mom was an air traffic controller in her youth (19-33) and my dad has been an airline mechanic type person (I don’t know what the official title is) for 34 years. I also like zoning out and looking out the window. It seems most people shut the blinds on flight but I just stare out the window for hours on end. (Florida born Hoosier who likes going home to Florida).

I used to hate take off and turbulance, terrified that the plane was going to crash and I was going to die, but I got over that last year. At one point I was so scared that I would keep my eyes shut from the minute the plane started moving until ten minutes after we were in the air. And I couldn’t sit in a window seat. I would have probably had a heart attack if I had.

I love flying, especially turbulence!

I don’t fear flying, despite the fact I have a fear of heights (get me on a ladder or looking down from a seven story building and I start freaking out, but I am slowly working towards getting over that fear…I’ve done ziplining from 8 stories and worked on the roof of a 30 story building; I plan on doing parasailing and sky diving ). However, I can sit in a chair, thousands of feet in the air, and travel miles away within the time frame of a movie or two (not to mention, the luxury of a bathroom, entertainment [depending on airline], and free snacks/ drinks
). How AWESOME is that?!!

I have flown many times. I’ve never been scared.

I flew more post-9/11 than I did in my earlier years but what has me scared to fly is weather, not terrorists. I KNOW that flying is the safest form of travel statistic wise but in 2006, we flew back to FL & the midwest tornados made the winds so choppy & forceful that the take off was rocky (like you heard shit vibrating) then the plane DROPPED out the sky a good amount of feet to the point everyone was screaming. Mom & I were hugging each other saying I love you thinking it was our last day. Thank God it wasnt.
I miss flying but the fear still gets to me. The next & last time I was on a plane was 2 years later when my grandpa passed away. Only because it was last minute & I didnt have a choice but I cried the whole way so bad the stewardess had to sit with me.

I am terrified of flying.. Not so much when I was younger. My old best friends dad was a pilot and he had his own little plane. I was 10 at the time, and it was my birthday present. A ride on a small plane in my small town, fun right?.. Not.. He nose dived the plane 2 times thinking it was funny or something.. I was so scared I thought I was going to die.. And ever since then, I’ve been so scared of them. I made myself a promise that I will never go onto a plane again but in 2007 I basically HAD to because of something going on in my life and I had to be sedated before take off. I am glad I was able to bring these pills on the plane and that they offer these to people really afraid of heights. Another year I bawled basically the WHOLE way. I was on my way to Las Vegas and the winds in vegas causes alot of turbulance… Really scary.. I still cant believe that idiot did that to me on the plane….

@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - Your story sounds a bit like mine. Especially the ending with having to fly without much choice and crying the whole way.

Not really. My phobias involve bugs and dying from real and/or imagined diseases.

Never flew in a plane until I was like 18 when I went to visit my online boycrush for the first time (we started dating shortly after, now it’s been 2 years). Never was afraid, it’s pretty sweet.

I’m scared of take off, landing, and turbulence, but I’m fine other than that. I love looking out the windows. I was sad that I didn’t have a window seat when I went to Europe :[ That would have entertained me for that whole twelve hour flight.

I like flying, other than the crampedness of the seats. What I do get freaked out about though, is getting lost in the airport and missing my flight. That always stresses me out.

Agreed on the landing thing — I hold my breath for the bounce!

I love flying, but I hate turbulence. I fly from England to Australia pretty regularly and I’ve had the plane drop several feet because of thunderstorms and bad wind. THAT is scary. But when the weather is fine, I love it
@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - that plane-dropping thing happened to me too once. I genuinely thought I was going to die.

I just fear the sexual assault and possible trip to prison when trying to get TO the plane. Thanks TSA for making sure everyone has an uncomfortable flight!

I love flying as my Dad used to be a pilot (still has his license but just stopped wanting to work as one). But… after my sister’s wedding, I had to get on a little box-engine airplane and oh my god. I felt like that thing was going to fall out of the sky at least 5 times because it was REALLY windy that day. For the first time in my life, I actually felt really sick & a lot of the people around me did throw up though thankfully I didn’t. But I was glad my next flight was late so I had a little time to recover from it…

I don’t mind flying or taking off. I just hate everything in between. It freaks me out to be that high in the air and not be able to escape anywhere safe if something were to happen. Unfortunately for me flying is the only way I can travel out of country (until they invent teleportation machines). Next time i’ll just dope myself up on anti-anxiety meds

I’ve been on planes since I was months old.
it never gets less terrifying.

I LOVE FLYING so much that I’d like to work for an airline one day~
