It’s safe to say that a lot of the content on TV lately has been pushing the boundaries when it comes to gender and sexuality. This not only makes for some great TV, but for some even more interesting conversations the morning after. There’s nothing like re-capping with your friends about last night’s episode of your favorite show and talking about those “did that really happen?” moments. With ABC’s latest comedy Work It, the ad promoting the show already has people talking — and the show hasn’t even aired yet.
While we’ve seen TV break down a lot of barriers, not many have shone light on the cross-dressing population. Well, ABC is trying to change that and do it through none other than comedy. While bringing humor to a situation can often make diverse groups of people come together, a lot of people are already voicing opinions about the show — and then to add to it, there’s this ad.
If you can’t tell, it features two people in a bathroom. At first glance you see a couple of cute business appropriate outfits, heels, and some seriously toned calves. If you look a little closer, you’ll see that while it is in fact a bathroom, those happen to be urinals. Yes, that’s cross dressing. While people defend the show, calling it “gender-progressive” considering there haven’t been many shows out there like it, other people worry it will be deemed offensive, and this ad is just the beginning. What do you guys think of the ad? Steps in the right direction? Or a topic that should be handled better?

From what I’ve read about this show, it’s actually making fun of crossdressing. It doesn’t feature actual transgender people as main characters — the show is about two guys who can’t find jobs as men so they dress up as women and get a job that way.
