This brightened my day. Andrej is the fashion industry’s sort of pet favorite at the moment since he’s made history as a successful model on both sides of the gender fence — a fence that’s sort of crumbling like the Berlin wall. That said, Dutch company HEMA just rolled out an ad featuring none other than Mister Pejic modeling the store’s own — push-up bras.
When I moved to Amsterdam in 2007, HEMA was a life-saver. I had neglected to bring miscellany things like a pillow or an umbrella, and their prices were something I could actually stomach — unlike their street food — even after the exchange rate. This bra, which seems to truly deliver on “2 cups extra” is a mere 20 euros, and I must say, Andrej is rocking it.
I think my favorite part about this ad is that if someone isn’t clued in about Andrej and his reputation in the fashion industry, they would overlook this ad just like any other of a woman modeling a bra. It’s so subtly tongue-in-cheek I can’t help but giggle. Sure, Pejic’s name is printed at the bottom, and he is very feminine and doesn’t really have a preference on the gender persuasion of the fashions he sells, but this is a quiet triumph for all the dudes born unfairly as dudes who are trying to be accepted as women. This, to me, isn’t just a guy who happens to look nice in womenswear. It’s a statement that says, “It’s okay to wear what you feel comfortable in. We (pun intended) support you.”
Thoughts, Lovelies? Is this a step forward for trans acceptance?

Not really sure what’s so spectacular about a guy who looks like a chick and is thus able to model for both men and women lines. What are we supposed to be accepting of, guys who look like women and women who look like guys? Because I’m pretty sure most are already accepting of men with feminine features and women with androgynous features. If this was supposed to be about, say, transgendered people being accepted, then I’d only see this as a step forward if the model was transgendered. But uh… yeah.

I was going to complain about this being one less job for a woman, but I guess it’s always the case that, when someone gets accepted, someone else gets pushed out. It’s still a little strange and I wonder if an American company would do it?

Very pretty.

If I just saw these pictures without reading the rest of the post, I would’ve thought he was just another female model. He’s got more curves than some of the girls I see around campus, haha.
guest
Wait…how can he model bras if he has no breasts?
guest
@here4onething@xanga - I think that’s the point of the campaign for the pushup bra.
Too bad he makes a pretty hot girl. That bra sucks though, soooo many lies. 2 cups extra makes him look like he has a decent pair of breasts, so if a real girl actually wore that around…yeah lies heh.

lol thinks a woman might hate it if her boy toy turned out to be prettier than her lol

I didn’t know who he is, so if I saw the ad in a magazine, I wouldn’t have thought anything of it. Now that I know who he is, it still doesn’t matter to me because he looks like a woman in the ad. But either way, I don’t know if others should be encouraged to accept people unlike them, because I was never encouraged that way. I was taught to mind my own business and let others live as they choose to, because in the end I am responsible for me not everyone on the planet.

@LightBlue21@xanga - OOOhhh wow that is amazing :O
guest
@JusticeCho@xanga - I agree. Those types of push up bras are just way too obnoxious for me. I put one on and it was like a HUGE neon sign that said “she stuff her bra!! NOT REAL”
guest
@here4onething@xanga - Oops that was actually the wrong one.

@LightBlue21@xanga - That was also pretty shocking lol. They look very real.

i mean, i’m down for a pretty trans guy. but i would like my lingerie model to have boobs.
guest
@LightBlue21@xanga - Arg a ‘friend’ of mine uses nu bra’s on a daily basis so everyone thinks she has nice fuller breasts than she’s really got. They’re always going about how nice they are and I just want to be like damnit they’re not real! hehe.
guest
@JusticeCho@xanga - Haha I would totally do that if I was going somewhere where I wouldn’t see people ever again.
But I just can’t on a daily basis. Can’t end up dating a guy who only likes girls with big boobs!
guest
his boobs look better than mine

I hate those bras. I swear, it’s impossible to buy a not-padded bra nowadays.
As for the model, good for him. And good for the company. It really shouldn’t make a difference.

@ashleynicole - having taken care of a lot of transgender now-women in my salon career, it’s a touchy thing for a lot of them to embark on the initial steps of embracing who they are. many of them aren’t actually surgically trans yet, but are trying to assimilate and fit in as women simply with their grooming. to have an ad say “it’s ok for a dude to wear a bra” is like someone saying “come in, you’re welcome here,” which is something they don’t feel often. he doesn’t have to be “trans” himself in order to make the statement.

@LightBlue21@xanga - Exactly. I don’t even like big breasts, but it’s just the fact you think you have one thing then it slowly shreds away revealing all the lies (fake breast enhancements, fake eye lashes, fake skin bronzing, hair extensions, double eyelid tape, lip plumpers, girdles, butt enhancers…sigh). Why must women lie so much heh.

Am I the only one that sees the body image issues this can cause? The fashion industry wants women to have the hipless slender body that’s typical in men, while still looking like females and this guy fits that mold. I don’t think he’s doing anything good for the transgendered community, because of the reason I just named.
guest
@JusticeCho@xanga - Lol I used double eyelid tape…and have permanently bigger eyes! But people say they don’t really mind because you can’t tell the difference unless you look at me closely in person and then at a closeup old picture.
guest
@JusticeCho@xanga - probably because we’re expected to be perfect when we’re only human. we can’t control how big our boobs are naturally, and our society says “bigger is better” when it comes to boobs, so it’s either feel crappy about yourself for having tiny tits or do something about it so you look better in clothes and get more attention from guys. i think the real problem is that we’re expected to look a particular way or else we’re “ugly.” if our society expanded its definition of beautiful and started being more realistic about what women actually look like, women would feel less pressure to conform to a particular standard.

Models are like actors. They dress up, do a job, fill a role. Sometimes they transgender it. It’s not an issue for me so I don’ t know if it makes a statement or not to this group or that group. In the end, the message I get is that “hot” means stick thin with big tits, and pouty lips. And that this bra can do that for you. I guess, if you actually knew the model is a guy, the message would be, this bra is SOOOO good, it can make a guy into a hot woman!
If he can model their product they way they want, he gets the job fair and square, gender discrimination shouldn’t be an issue.

I absolutely love this man. When it comes to sexuality, I go both, well, ALL ways, so seeing him always brings me GREAT pleasure. haha Two for one.
guest
I think it’s great and he makes a beautiful woman!

@kackie - I dunno, I just personally don’t see any real statement about this. I definitely agree with @ccccourage@xanga in the whole “actor” thing. It doesn’t feel like its purpose or any potential purposes of this ad/shoot was to make any type of gender statements, because they are clearly not indicating “hey look, this is a dude who is dressing like a woman and it’s okay!” As stated, it would be assumed that most would just think he was a woman because a lot of people don’t actually follow the careers of models in the modelling industry. But meh.
guest
@LightBlue21@xanga - Ah so you’re one of them…the liars! Hehe jk.
guest
I saw him in an interview, the guy is just as air-headed as every other model out there. I don’t think he’s that attractive either. He kind of creeps me out.
guest
If I saw these pictures in a magazine, the only reason I would stop on them is if I already knew this person was a man. To me, that’s the only impressive thing about them. That’s a personal opinion though. People like different things.
guest
@ashleynicole - I was thinking the same thing.
This man isn’t transgendered. He considers himself androgynous. That and he makes his sex change dependent on whether Victoria’s Secret offers him a steady gig or not. Going to be completely honest here… I don’t have much appreciation for someone who is willing to make their sex job dependent. It’s supposed to be a matter of how you identify yourself, and not about how much money you could make off your looks.
guest
Beautiful. Fabulous.
guest
What? I don’t get it. So is he even transgendered or just androgynous?
And a man modeling a bra doesn’t do much for me. I need to see what the bra looks like on someone who actually has boobs before I can be persuaded to buy it.

I don’t know, I’m kind of “meh” on using the modeling industry to promote social acceptance or agendas. People make such a huge deal out of it, but really, the average person doesn’t care about what’s new in the fashion world.
I also don’t get what’s unfair about being born a gender other than what you want to be. That’s… kind of a risk everyone takes by being born and alive. I could understand it being called “unfortunate”, but “unfair” implies that someone has inflicted something on them that’s just not right, and really, what genitals you are born with is out of everyone’s control.
So, to finally answer the question: No, I don’t think so. Modeling tends to follow cultural and societal trends, not create them. (Not talking about fashion trends here!)

@AffinityInUnderstanding@xanga - I didn’t even think about that aspect of it, I definitely see where you are coming from with that! It really doesn’t feel like it is an “acceptance” thing, since if it was wouldn’t he NOT be switching genders all the time? I mean, I’d get it if it was promoting acceptance of cross-dressing, but not transgenders. I just don’t see a real connection between him and that.
But regardless, if someone is transgendered or just gender-confused in some way and finds a model like this to be helpful to themselves finding acceptance for their own being, then that’s great. Who am I to say that someone finding meaning in this man’s work as being wrong or invalid? I just don’t see the point in proclaiming it a big thing to everyone, since it’s (to me) clearly not about trying to make such a statement.

Yeah just great- now women are competing for men with transexuals . I have very mixed feelings about it.
