Liquid shampoos are so 2008. In the last few years, dry shampoos have taken over because they effectively hide dirty locks without water. We know that our Lovelies always want to be ahead of the trend, so I bring to you the next big thing in hair washing: bar shampoo.
Bar shampoo isn’t a new thing. In fact, Lovelies has raved about it in the past. (And here!) If you’re tired of the same old shampoo and conditioner, why not lather, rinse and repeat with something new?
To use it, wet both your hair and the bar. Rub the bar down the length of your hair on all sides on your head (left, back, right). Lather the shampoo into your hair and follow by rinsing thoroughly. Be sure to keep your bar in a dry, cool place between uses.
You may be wondering the benefits of switching from a liquid to a bar. Not only will your hair smell fresh after your wash, but it will shine like it never has before because of the specialized ingredients to improve the health of your hair. That’s right, I said ingredients, not chemicals. One of the best reasons to make the switch is to clean out all of the gunk other shampoos coat on your hair when you “clean” it.
If you want to give bar shampoo a whirl, here are a few favorites:
Godiva Shampoo Bar, 10.95 at LUSH
So what do you think, will you give bar shampoo a try? What other alternative hair products do you use?

Find me some bar conditioner and we’ll talk.

A Lush store actually just opened up at one of the malls near me. The smell of the store itself gave me a headache, but I would definitely try a bar shampoo. I think my hair is entirely too dependent on chemicals. My sister only uses water now after doing the baking soda and vinegar thing, and says her hair has never felt better.

in my opinion, bar shampoo doesnt last as long as a bottle. at least the lush ones cuz theyre so small and they melt quickly.
@rosertot_love@xanga - lush sells a bar conditioner too!

I would just like to point out that Lush bar shampoos have sulfates in them still….which is not good…

Godiva shampoo is absolutely incredible. I highly recommend it.

I loved shampoo bars from Chagrin’s Valley, which have no SLS, not to mention they had all these awesome oil and butter ingredients. They worked really well for awhile and I still recommend them, but they’re a bit more difficult to use in hard water areas like the one I live now. So, now I do conditioner-only with a -cone free conditioner, use a dilute citric acid rinse, and oil my hair with coconut oil heavily the night before I wash and lightly on the ends as needed. I only need to clarify my hair once every three weeks and I use a chelating shampoo once every six weeks or so for the hard water minerals.

@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - So many props to this comment! I hate when people automatically go, “Ew, chemicals!” Everything is made of chemicals!
I never have any trouble with gel or liquid shampoos. My hair never feels gunky or weighed down at all when I was with my typical Herbal Essences.

this is going to sound…well probably gross to some people…but I have a friend who doesn’t wash her hair..said it really helped…she would super rinse and scrub it then put conditioner in it…I tried that for a while…( I experiment with all sorts of “home remedy” stuff) it was okay..but made my hair all thick feeling…I’ve tried washing it and putting a little bit of olive oil in it with essential oils…that worked well enough..but I only liked doing that if I was putting it up…and it did help….I have used coconut oil as well…again..it worked pretty well..Now I just use a leave in conditioner (shampoo and then leave in conditioner). I’ve heard and looked at recipes for homemade shampoo…but I’ve not done it yet..I might when my bottle of shampoo runs out…and I’ve never tried the bar shampoo..but now I’d like too!

Does this work on black people hair? Lmao, not to sound bad or anything
but I’m bi-racial and my hair will fuck this bar up if it can’t handle it’s own.

I haven’t washed my hair since October. I started doing the conditioner-only washing method, and it definitely helps to keep my scalp condition under control.

@rosertot_love@xanga - ROFL!! YES! I KNOW, RIGHT???
It seems like a wonderful thing to try…. but I can’t really live without conditioner. : /

I’d try it, but I’d have to have a conditioner.

sounds interesting. i would probably try it if they were available to me, though the whole “keep in a dry cool place” seems like a hastle. i’d want to leave it in my shower and not have to shuffle it out after every time i use it :/
