We all know that Christmas is on its way, but here’s a little nugget for us Jewish Lovelies. We may be a tiny percent of the population, but there are certainly a number of folks we can brag about lighting the menorah with! Hypothetically, of course. Most of the big names are pretty well publicized already (Adam Sandler, Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis, etc.), but here are some others you may not have known about. I sure didn’t!
1. Helena Bonham-Carter. Yep, our very own Bellatrix Lestrange is Jewish on her mother’s side! Helena’s maternal grandmother was from an upper-class Jewish family; her sister actually married a man from the Rothschild family, which is of Jewish origins, extremely prominent, very wealthy and considered nobility in several countries.
2. John Francis Daley. OK, not a huge name, but I watch him on TV every week and had no idea all those Christmas episodes aren’t true to his life. You may know him as Sam Weir from Freaks and Geeks back in the day, but right now he’s Lance Sweets on Bones. He also wrote (and acted in) the movie Horrible Bosses.
3. Drake (Aubrey Graham). Tell me I’m not the only one who is absolutely floored by this news! Though, when I think about it… Aubrey Graham? That name should’ve given me a clue. His father is black, and his mother is white and Jewish. They divorced when Drake (or, uh, Aubrey) was five. He was raised by his mother, went to a Jewish day school, and had a Bar Mitzvah.
4. Daniel Radcliffe. How I could be such a Harry Potter fan for so long and not know Dan is Jewish is beyond me. His mother is Jewish and, though Dan considers himself to be an atheist, he says he’s proud of his Jewish heritage. Rock on!
4. Jason Isaacs. Another Harry Potter star whose Jewishness escaped me! Lucius Malfoy here grew up in a tight Jewish community in Liverpool that his great-grandparents helped found, and attended a Jewish day school. When his family moved to London, his friends and synagogue were attacked by anti-Semites, so his parents immigrated to Israel.
6. Laura Prepon. That ’70s Show‘s own “Hot Donna” has Jewish roots as well. Her father was Russian Jewish and her mother is Irish Catholic. Okay, so technically these things are supposed to be inherited from your mother’s side, but I’m not picky. Jewish is Jewish, right?
Who are your favorite Jewish celebrities?

Could have sworn “Jewish” was a religion and way of life. If they don’t follow it, then they aren’t Jewish.

@EviLRaLpH1@xanga - Judaism is actually not only a religion but also a nationality.I think it’s the only religion that does that
guest
@EnPointeLove@xanga - What country is Jewish?
guest
@EviLRaLpH1@xanga - It doesn’t have any thing to do with a country. there is a Jewish nation, ever since biblical time. A nation’s definition is a community of people who share common language, culture, ethnicity and/or history. I’m not referring to what you commonly would think about when hearing the word nation, it’s more like a “people”. Also, Israel’s definition is, in fact, a Jewish country.

@EnPointeLove@xanga - So essentially, you just repeated what I said and ignored the point I made.

I don’t know about anyone else, but personally I’m not particularly interested in the religious backgrounds or beliefs of celebrities. Am I alone on Lovelyish in that I don’t really follow celebrity gossip?
No, I’m not living under a brick wall but I don’t actively search out celeb gossip or information. I don’t follow celebrities on twitter, rush to see a movie when a certain actor stars in it, or buy gossip magazines. It just doesn’t appeal to me.
I’m not a celebrity hater by any means – I think they are people just like ourselves. However, I’m just not that into the personal lives of those deemed by society as “celebrities.”

Awesome or not… it’s hardly a surprise. There are gonna be a lot of Jews… it’s freakin Hollywood.
guest
@EnPointeLove@xanga - I’m pretty sure Muslims are the same in regards to it being both a nationality and religion for most of them.
guest
@EviLRaLpH1@xanga - It’s a middle eastern thing. The religion and nationality are deeply entwined.

@firetyger@xanga - It doesn’t take away that it’s still just a religion. And religion is a choice. It doesn’t matter if your parents are a certain religion. Religion is not passed down through DNA. So if they don’t follow the religion. They are not said religion.

@EviLRaLpH1@xanga - It’s not just a religion, though. That’s the whole point. You can be an atheist with a Jewish lineage and you will still be a Jew. ”It is important to note that being a Jew has nothing to do with what you believe or what you do. A person born to non-Jewish parents who has not undergone the formal process of conversion but who believes everything thatOrthodoxJews believe and observes every law and custom of Judaism is still a non-Jew, even in the eyes of the most liberalmovementsof Judaism, and a person born to a Jewish mother who is an atheist and never practices the Jewish religion is still a Jew, even in the eyes of the ultra-Orthodox. In this sense, Judaism is more like a nationality than like other religions, and being Jewish is like a citizenship.” [source]

@EviLRaLpH1@xanga - if you’re born a Jew, you’re Jewish forever, regardless of whether you believe in/follow Judaism or not. You can convert to another religion and still be Jewish. That’s a major difference between Judaism and traditional “western” religions.

No. There’s no country designated for only Jews. Yes, Isreal is prodominately Jewish. But that doesnt mean that all their citizens are Jewish. Being Jewish isnt something you pass down through DNA. It’s not like passing down blond hair, or green eyes. It’s a religion and a way of life. If you choose to believe some other god or no god. You can’t be Jewish. Would you call someone who doesnt believe in Jesus a Christian even though his parents believe in it? No, you wouldn’t. It’s absurd.
Also, people were around long before Judaism was around. So you can’t say that because a parent was born a Jew, their offspring has to be born Jewish. What happens when you trace that persons lineage back before Judaism was around? That means someone had to make up the term “Jewish”.
We also have free will. Whether you believe in a deity or not. We have the will to choose what we believe in. So if you dont believe in god. The point that your parents being Jewish makes you Jewish is moot.

I did not know Jason Isaacs is Jewish.
My favourite Jewish celebrities are Stephen Fry and Simon Amstell.

@shes_lump@xanga - No, she’s not. She’s Christian. Her father was an English Jew who was only half Jewish by blood.
tulip / 5 posts
Very few of these people are actually Jewish. Some of them might have a touch of Jewish blood somewhere in their family, but that only gives them a touch of Jewish blood. Don’t exaggerate and deceive the point away from reality. Scarlett Johansson is half Jewish by blood and was raised Lutheran. Helena Bonham Carter is as Anglican as Anglican can be. She’s not Jewish. She reports some woman who was German or Austrian nobility and Jewish happened to have married into her family long ago. But, it is not likely and was probably a lie meant to grant her favor in the eyes of her Jewish fans. The English only let one Jew who’s family had converted to the Church of England long before in over 500 years ever make it to becoming Prime Minister. You have to be Church of England or more recently Catholic to be prime minister of the UK. Here is a hyperlink to her family tree: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonham_Carter_family. Daniel Radcliffe as well is not Jewish and was raised Anglican with a mother who was from a Jewish family. Drake is Jewish but only half Jewish by blood and so not Jewish to the conservative types. John Francis Daley is half Jewish by blood on his mother’s side and it is not clear what his religion is.
I’m a bit puzzled why there are so many Jews OBSESSED with turning celebrities and many other people who are not Jewish into Jews in their minds and web pages. Its not reality if you come up with it in your head and then swear by it as if it were from an accurate textbook. I see this obsession in all of these pictures of Leonardo DiCaprio with Jewish symbols cast onto the image. Its not accurate. He parents were Roman Catholic and one was ethnic German and the other was ethnic Italian. Italian = Jewish.
Sorry, to disappoint. But, you probably knew they were lies before you posted them.

@quidam2010@xanga - About as Jewish as Heinrich Himmler.

@wretched_epiphany@xanga - Then he’s Christian, isn’t he?

@chicbananas@xanga - So basically what you are saying is the Jewish identity is a thing that comes from the mindset and idealization of hard line ultra-orthodox types. Are we talking about the types that half live the same way their ancestors did 500 years ago?
I don’t know how you can THINK your point makes Judaism or Jews look good or anything other than backwards knuckle draggers. The whole Zionism thing and kill all Arabs tradition is already posing a threat to being looked as a civilized culture or ethnic group(s). I don’t go to church to listen to a priest tell me exactly what to believe. I would rather he piss in my mouth than adopt all his beliefs and become a dirty cleric worshiper. Many Jews give me a strange feeling when they talk the way you do and force me to feel that their religion is just another fevered desert religion like Islam or Zoroastrianism. You wouldn’t like if Scandinavian and other Germanic peoples (I am, as in the true born and living in Europe variation, Danish by my father and Swedish by my mother and very blond with blue eyes and features the Nazi’s seemed to idolize) had this little celebratory classification system and hierarchy of types wherein we congratulated each other for being the most “Aryan” would you? Come on would you not like it if there was a wide scale Aryan Pride tradition amongst the hundreds of million of Germanic peoples in Europe. I mean the skinheads love it. Don’t you think it would be NICE to have all of the Germanic peoples believing in this rigid ethnic classification system that the Nazi’s so loved?
What’s my point? Stop be an empty headed hypocrite. Stop espousing conservative cultural ideals. There’s no place for them in Western culture anymore. Go back to the sand if you want to live that way and intermarry amongst homogeneous genetic groups until you no longer produce babies that have leg muscles or knees and everyone child dies of Tay-Sachs when they are five.
