Lovelyish reader Including_Sunshine asks:
Hello, Lovelies!
I’m a college student and just joined a sorority while my boyfriend just joined a fraternity which means a BUNCH of dress-up events I have to go to. I’ve never been the type of girl to have a million dresses but I only have two, and I have used them both already!
I have two formals coming up this next weekend – Friday and Saturday.
I was hoping that you could all give some advice on where to find some cheap but cute formal dresses! Of course, they wouldn’t be like Prom formal… Think more Homecoming. I do want them to be dressy-ish, not like a summer dress.
However, I do need them to be cheap! I am now paying for all my clothes, any activities I do, and my sorority while only working minimum wage.
Help! Thank you!
I will admit to being an absolute sucker for Forever21′s cheap dresses. When it comes to Forever 21, the most important thing is always making sure to pay attention to what fabric the dress is made of — typically, I tend to avoid anything that seems like a lot of, well, blends. Otherwise, they have a ton of great party dresses and it is possible to find some that work for more formal events.
My fiance is a member of a fraternity, so I completely understand the casual-but-formal vibe of many events. Here are two dresses I think would do the trick!
Silk-Blend Floral Dress, $32.80 from Forever 21
I love the shape and the delicate sheen of this dress. It’s formal without being over-the-top prom style and at $32.80, it’s not a bad price. Plus, because of the casual shape of this dress, you can wear it other ways, such as with a dark cardigan and flat boots to class or on a date! I would pair it with a cute cardigan and your favorite pumps, as well as a great pendant necklace.
Heritage 1981 Sheer Floral Dress, $24.90 from Forever 21
This is another great dress with a simple, gorgeous pattern. Plus, what an amazing color… and a ridiculously amazing price! I would pair this with some nude pumps and a heap of metallic bracelets. Throw on a cardigan for a little extra warmth and coverage. This is another dress that would look great for a casual day look — add a denim jacket, some black tights, and your favorite flat boots and you’ve got a class-ready or lunch date ready look!
Readers, what do you think? Do you have any online stores for great, affordable dresses?

Wow, I was expecting some outragous (sp) prices for dresses but these are actually reasonable and nice looking

I’ve found some really cute and affordable dresses at Ross & TJ Maxx, but they’re not as versatile as the dresses you posted. If you’ve got the patience to dig through the racks, it’s always worth a shot.
In other news, is that Nicole from America’s Next Top Model in the last picture?

@vivalafangirl@xanga - Yes. She is a model for Forever 21. I always find it amusing to see her on the website.
I definitely use Forever 21 quite a bit for sorority functions. I also use my resources (aka my sisters).

try using renttherunway.com – you can rent designer dresses for a few days for cheap! and i think they send you 2 sizes, just in case the one you ordered doesn’t fit right.

Ross, TJMaxx, Marshalls, Forever21, JCPenny, local Goodwill if you’re willing to make a few alterations. Those are my picks for finding a dress in such little time! Also, find good accessories and have fun with fancy and bold make up. You can turn a basic $6 dress from Goodwill into fab or chic if you just dress it up right with the right accessories, shoes, hairstyle, and makeup
good luck shopping!

@SKITTLESrockk@xanga - ROSS FOREVER AND ALWAYS. I got my Senior Ball (like college prom) dress there for under twenty bucks. Floor length. Epic win. All the stores you recommended are awesome though!

I’ve only needed one dress since my high school days and that was about a year and a half ago for my cousin’s wedding. Honestly, if I loved a dress that much (and it was one that wasn’t uber formal but not too casual), I’d still wear it. I can’t exactly go out and buy a dress/outfit every time I needed one. I’d rather look into accessories first.

http://www.lulus.com is my absolute favourite website for dresses. Everything is affordable and fabulous. Half my wardrobe is from here.

Never had luck with TJ/Marshalls/Ross/Burlington Coat Factory for dresses, but Filene’s Basement has awesome dress sales every spring! (I’ve never tried shopping for one in the fall, but it’s worth a try if you have one handy…

Forever 21 has a lot of cute dresses, and they have a variety of types that fit all body types. But their dresses get expensive fast.
Marshells has a ton of dressy clothes super cheap.
TJ Max is brilliant for a quick fix
if you like online stores: overstock.com is the place to go
if you have a Ross store by you (or other overstock stores)
For designer names for cheap: Nordstrom Rack (their prices are about the same as forever 21)

Try stores like Ross and TJ Maxx. Depending on what they get you can find some really cute formals.
