With stores like Forever 21 getting into the maternity wear game (their line Love 21), it seems that more women want to stay stylish while they’re preggers. What about those who aren’t pregnant though? Are more of us wearing maternity clothing just because we can?
If you ask me, the answer is definitely yes. And why not? Today’s maternity wear is not only fashionable, but it’s meant to be comfy and flattering too.
I’m not the only one who feels this way — just ask the women over at Stylelist, including former Lovelyish editor Jessica rocking a Love 21 cardi:
One of my favorite sundresses is actually from Motherhood Maternity, but I didn’t know that when I thrifted it years ago:
One of my favorite shopping tips is actually shopping outside the basic women’s and junior’s sections. Don’t be afraid to shop the maternity or the kids’ aisles!
Here are some of my favorite pieces for Love 21 right now. Because if fashion models can rock maternity wear… wait, that’s not how it works, is it? Regardless:
Love 21 Drape One Shoulder Dress, $27.80 from Forever 21
Perfect for your next holiday party!
Love 21 Lace Trimmed Marled Sweater, $17.80 from Forever 21
Loose, lightweight and lacy.
Love 21 Wool-Blend Double-Breasted Jacket, $54.80 from Forever 21
A fun military-inspired coat in classic camel to keep you warm.
Don’t forget to check out our photo gallery to see non-pregnant women rocking maternity clothes. Would you try it?

Not gonna lie, I get REALLY jealous when I walk by the Motherhood Maternity at the mall I work in and see all the cute clothes they have. I always think, “Hmmm that’s really cute. Oh wait, it’s maternity wear fml.”

I was gonna be all, “What? No! LUL!!” and then criticize people who wear maternity clothing, but considering my crack is sticking out of my jeans and I’m missing a fake fingernail, I feel too incompetent to criticize anyone’s style.

I own a few maternity shirts & dresses from Target’s Liz Lange line & Macy’s Heidi Klum line. I usually just buy a size smaller than I normally wear; I carry my weight in my stomach, so as sad as it may seem, sometimes maternity clothing fits me great.
guest
I do. It fits me perfectly. I have a small chest and a larger bottom half. My grandmother was the same way and she did the same thing. The only thing I refuse to wear is the jeans with the fabric on the belly section.

I was in Target looking at their clearance and picked up a really cute trench coat. It was extra small so I thought it might be okay but when I tried it on the fit just wasn’t right.

@SuburbanSweetheart - that makes a lot of sense! Probably works the same for me.

@aWishfulCynic@xanga - ahh, ok, I got a bit confused. They have Love 21 and Love 21 Maternity (http://www.forever21.com/Product/Category.aspx?br=f21&category=maternity_main) apparently. Way to go, Sarah.

Yeah, I do. I often get weird looks for doing it but I honestly don’t care. Some stores do really adorable maternity lines!

Cute I would have never though of that. Oh wow! Might have to keep my eyes open for items and broaden my horizon.

I imagine that if I were to ever decide to have a baby that I would wear things that were comfotable and fashionable. I forsee alot of ballet flats and sweaters in my pregnancy future. LOL
guest
@SuburbanSweetheart - That’s not sad.
As long as it fits and you’re comfortable who cares?

I have two maternity pieces of clothing that I bought not knowing. One is a nice top I got from the Goodwill, and the other is my stretchy pants/leggings I picked up at a side shop in Cairo (I guess they make clothes, send most of them to the US and abroad, and then keep the extra to sell cheaper in downtown stores…)
guest
Um….Love 21 has a Maternity section, but none of those items are part of it…
guest
ummm no. that’s just making an excuse to have stretchy clothes that you can grow fat in. when you don’t have an excuse to get fat! youre not pregnant…dont take the cute clothes from them.
guest
I accidentally did once…I bought a really cute dress at Goodwill and didn’t look at the tag until later to realize that it was maternity. Oops!
guest
I never have, but I won’t rule it out.
Sidenote: That top picture, with the girl all the way to the right in the white flowy top- who else thinks the knock-kneed model position is ridiculous looking? The pregnant belly just makes it more silly. I wish models wouldn’t do that.
guest
one of my favorite tops is maternity. i didnt intentionally seek it out but i didnt rule it out when i found out either. i like the fit coz it accentuates my boobs but is loose around the stomach where most of my fat accumulates. i say if its cute and fits your body the way you want then go for it.
guest
@SuburbanSweetheart - That’s exactly how it is for me too. I have the “beer gut” from the women on each side of my family. So I’m screwed. Lol.
guest
maybe i’d wear the maternity clothes i currently have after i’ve had the baby until i get my pre-pregnancy body back, but i think they might look a bit odd because of the shape they are made for.
i’d go for a no with wearing maternity clothes when not pregnant.
guest
I have not worn maternity clothes, but if it fits, moderately priced and you like it, I’d be ok with women who aren’t pregnant wearing maternity clothes.
@WaitingToShrug@xanga - I hate that pigeon-toed pose! I find it very annoying, it looks like she needs to make a run for the ladies’ room. I don’t know why people think that pose is cute.
guest
@WaitingToShrug@xanga -
She looks like she is trying to be a really cute rag doll and failing badly.
guest
I won’t lie, I’ve been considering it.
guest
I would DEFINITELY wear the first white shirt.
I know I’ve bought tops from the plus size line to turn them into off-the-shoulder outfits, so I would probably buy maternity clothes if I found something that spoke to me.
guest
@shes_lump@xanga - Sometimes “form” fitting clothes arent very comfortable..
Doesnt maternity clothes have different sizes in it as well? Well then someone can just buy a small or whatever and yeah It may be a bit big in the stomach area, but sometimes the pregnancy clothes are stretchy and it wouldnt be as big.. I dunno, Ive never worn them so I guess I wouldnt know I just assumed that
guest
If it looks good, yes.
guest
i gained the sophomore 25 so i have a gut now. Might as well
guest
I’d totally wear maternity clothes. You really can’t tell the difference unless it has some baby bump defining portion. Though, I don’t think Forever 21′s Love 21 line is only maternity. It’s a more contemporary style of attire compared to their regular features.
guest
In a word, yes.
guest
No fucking way. I always accidentally walk into the sections because I see cute things and some stores the departments are all next to each other. And as soon as I see people staring at me, I look up and see the sign and gtfo. Even if no one stares, I’m always afraid someone will see me in a maternity piece and be like …. I know what that is. How far along are you? Screw that haha. Nottttt until I’m really preggers!
guest
It’s too big in the middle/stomach
I learned this accidentally, but the hard way nonetheless.
guest
My mom used to buy maternity clothing even way after she had me & wasn’t pregnant at all. I always had to lie when the ladies at the store were asking me if I was excited for my new sibling.
guest
my most comfy shorts are maternity
guest
Some of those clothes don’t even look like maternity clothes. Pretty nice.
guest
I do all the time and I don’t care if people look at me funny or ask if I am pregnant (although no one has ever asked if I was pregnant).
guest
Your work is totally appreciative and informative. <a
