We’ve all had those days where maybe we we’re too tired, or too busy, to really pay attention to what we were doing. Whether it was looking for something at a local drug store or getting ready in your own house, in an effort to save time you took a quick look at the label, grabbed it and used it. It’s only mid-way through using it when realize that was not what you meant to use. These moments always remind me of the age-old saying to not judge a book by its cover but sometimes it feels like it should apply to products too — or maybe I should just pay closer attention.
The elusive all-cal Coke in white congnito.
The victim: Diet Coke.
Apparently, I’m not the only one. Coca-Cola recently made some efforts to try and raise awareness about global warming and how it affects their wildlife logo — polar bears — but it actually ended up raising eyebrows at how unaware we can be as consumers. The company recently released a series of cans turning their signature red cans white. And the change has definitely made an impact, just not in the environmental kind of way. The soft drinks new look has been easily confused with the design of Diet Coke, giving those trying to quench their thirst a little surprise when the drink hits their lips. [via Jezebel]
Apparently consumers find it “impossible” to tell the difference. While the two do look similar in their color schemes, there are some clear differences. For one, the writing styles, and two, the pictures in general. Oh! there’s also the “Diet” on one and not the other, but hey, we all make mistakes.
Diet Coke lovers ain’t having none of that. Their outrage over sipping regular Coca-Cola has forced the festive cans off the shelves and back into hibernation. Seems a little extreme to me, but clearly people love their Diet Coke.
Here are some other easy mishaps that can cause a ripple in your day, but make for a good story to tell later! I’m personally guilty of the hair spray instead of deodorant mix-up. Unfortunately, more than once. Needless to say those are always interesting mornings.
Spraying your Dove Hairspray (above) instead of your Dove Deodorant can cause quite the sticky situation for your under-arms!
Or what about…
Even if your hair is a little burnt from all of that flat-iron usage, applying aloe vera gel, instead of regular hair gel, isn’t going to help heal that burn!
Are you one of those Coca-Cola lovers? Are there any products you always mix up? Any funny stories to tell?

Well…I knew it was Coca Cola because the box was still red but after I took them out of the box and put them in the fridge the husband thought it was Diet Coke from a quick glance. Thankfully I haven’t applied deodorant to my hair or hairspray to my underarms yet…I am not a fan of new packaging on my favorite products. For instance, when Tropicana gave their OJ cartons a more modern look, I freaked out (just a little) at the market because I couldn’t find the juice with straw-adorned orange on the carton. BUT, I can see how the mistake can occur because of the iconic look of the Coca Cola packaging that would throw people off.

People really bitched about that? Seriously? How hard is it to go, “Oh, my mistake, I guess I should have paid more attention next time.” Especially since it’s printed RIGHT ON THE FRICKING CAN. smh.

i’m a Coca Cola girl myself but my goodness people need to chill out, it was a mistake but you can clearly see the word “diet” . if you’re that lazy / incompetent then perhaps you don’t deserve to suck down some meaningless calories with the rest of us !

i thought they were diet coke when i first saw them, but upon a closer look, i realized it was regular. it doesn’t look the same at all. people are so stupid sometimes.

That is why you should try to pay attention to everything you buy. Consumers need to look a bit harder even if they have one of those days, also it is good to double check anyhow. That is how I catch things in our grocery basket that do not belong. It saves energy and time to do this in the long run, also how can you miss the word diet on the can?

Haha, this tricked me at a party. I try to drink as little soda period but it didn’t kill me that I had a regular Coke.

This drives me nuts. People do NOT. Pay. Attention. Ever. If you have your head too far up your ass to read the fucking can, then you’re going to get the wrong thing. Simple. It’s not Coke’s fault, it’s your damned fault. I work in customer service and have had to talk to a ton of bitchy people who just glanced at a picture, ordered something, then got pissed when it did or did not exhibit characteristics that we list in both the item description AND the item’s NAME. The average consumer seems to be a moron with no sense of personal responsibility, so it doesn’t surprise me that people threw a fit about this. We all make mistakes, but you have to realize when they’re your fault for just not paying attention. Marketing departments shouldn’t have to compensate for every fucking idiot that buys things.

Some people just think “Oh no, change!” and then suddently… DERP

i like it, it looks cute

i have a cetaphil lotion and cetaphil face cleanser that come in identical beige bottles with a push-top, the only visible difference is thatthe label says one is a cleanser and one is a lotion. i can’t tell you how many times i’ve almost put face cleanser on my knees, lol… goes to show how much time we spend in auto-pilot!

But what about the polar bears!? Are diet coke drinkers just going to continue being outraged over labels and not give two shits about the polar bears? Apparently so.
This is why the third world and the environment suffers: because of these ridiculous first world problems.

i can see the difference from far.
I think people just need to take the time to read the label more carefully!
& i really like the polar bear design. very cute.

people are such whiny assholes. get over it, seriously.
it’s to raise awareness for something good and people fuck it up because they’re lazy and can’t be bothered to LOOK AT A CAN. get over yourselves.

I read a great reply to a similar story about the Coke White Can:
“If you’re too stupid to read the label, drink water.”
I concur with the above…

I feel really bad for those poor creatures who are having their dietary habits so drastically altered, and it’s beyond their natural survival abilities to respond.
We have to do something to stop these Polar bears from harming these precious confused creatures who can’t read labels.Nevermind the fact that the 12 packs of coke classic are still the same red, these polar bears are selfishly risking people consuming more calories and fewer chemicals than they might intend to all because they cant sustain their pesky living habits and thought raising awareness might have people help them.
Polar bears are dicks like that

I’ve already witnessed the confusion. The office I work in, we have a little fridge for students to grab a soda for 50 cents and there was a good 5 minute conversation “wait…this is coke…or is this diet coke…I’m so confused” between a bunch of us.

It’s not like they mistook it for bleach, so there are worse things– those darn illiterate diet coke consumers huffing and puffing over nothing. And it surely doesn’t matter to me what color a regular coke can is, I can read, and it’s still as delicious as ever.

Lol when i was recently in the hospital having my little girl they sent up a can of coke with my lunch one day i was ticked at first because i thought it was diet, after looking at the can more closely i realized it was regular lol. If they are going to change the can so drastically they should also style the case in the same fashion, it may still cause some confusion but at least people would know what to expect when they open it up.

I think the new cans are adorable. and yeah it may look like diet coke, but it says coca-cola in big red letters and the can is pretty much white not silver.! theres a big defference. and there for the holidays so obviously there going to make the snow white. This honestly is making me mad, do people really hate there lives so much that they have to complain about a pop can. like seriously people get over yourselfs and get a life theres other things to be mad about then a white pop can.

Anyone who actually goes grocery shopping, or cooks, or has to buy specific products would not have had this problem. This is kind of shameful. It just goes to show how quickly we can buy whatever we want…it’s so much stuff, that we get “chronically” confused and actually complain about the packaging. What pigs we are sometimes. Not to say I don’t appreciate the freedom we have to do so…but my god, we don’t have to do so.
guest
That’s just sad that people have so much trouble telling diet and regular apart. The deodorant and hairspray one…I can totally see that. I haven’t had this problem, yet anyway.
guest
When I opened it up, I looked at the box twice thinking, “crap did I accidentally grab diet?” but if you’re not a moron and read closer, you realize why. People are just lazy.

This has generated more buzz than the original message of the polar bears plight.
Sheeple are stoopid.

I really don’t believe the stupidity of people tbh. It’s your own fault you didn’t read the sodding label, stop blaming the company!
guest
This is actually a good thing. This fights illiteracy in America by forcing people to actually read, and obesity by tricking people into thinking that diet coke they’re drinking is actually the new Coke. Win/Win

Everyone is an idiot. That’s the only reason this could ever been an issue.
