People will literally do anything to get what they want on Black Friday! A woman shot pepper spray to keep shoppers away from the things she wanted during a Black Friday sale at Wal- Mart! Yikes.
The whole ordeal took place around 10:20 Thursday night at a Los Angeles area Wal-Mart, while shoppers were let in the store to shop. Authorities on the scene said 20 people suffered minor injuries. The woman shot the pepper spray when the items she wanted were removed, police said.
“Somehow she was trying to use it to gain an upper hand,” police Lt. Abel Parga said early Friday. The woman was apparently after some electronics and used the mace to keep other shoppers away. She hasn’t been found by the police yet. Wal-Mart remained open, with the rest of the Black Friday shoppers unaffected by the spray continuing to search for great deals. [via Huffington Post]
Absolutely insane! I know that Black Friday can be intense, and everyone wants to find early Christmas gifts on sale. But pepper spraying customers? Really?! Is it that serious? I know people may have a mini tug-of-war fight over an item, but to purposely hurt someone for the sake of a few more gifts in your cart? That’s really foul play.
To be honest, I’ve never shopped on Black Friday. I always just hold off for Cyber Monday, for a few reasons. One, I don’t have to fight over a sweater or something else I want. A couple of clicks and it’s mine. Two, I don’t have the energy to go after Thanksgiving dinner. Too much food!
Did you Lovelies head out today for Black Friday 2011? What are the craziest antics you’ve heard of?

That is so fucked up. If I ever get pepper sprayed in a store by another customer, they are getting punched in the face. People are so ridiculous. I am never going Black Friday shopping. Ever.

there was another story about a shooting in another wal mart somewhere the suspect was arrested

Isn’t what she did punishable by the police or the law? I would probably sue her for doing that because no item is worth going to jail or getting in trouble for. Material items only go so far…I’m glad that I stayed home the majority of the morning and went shopping (barely) in the mid afternoon after I had a nice breakfast and slept.

The crowds seem to get worse every year. It doesn’t help the economy is in the crapper. People are more desperate for deals and some really act up. It’s amazing the length others will go to get a bargain. A few years back, I saw one woman and her entire family/relatives practically rip Coach bags out of people’s hands while they were looking at it. How rude. I’m surprised a fight didn’t break out.

I killed a man on black friday. With my thumb.

I didn’t go out b/c what’s the point in wasting money that day just to possibly be attacked or trampled? I’ve lived overseas for a while now (3 years) & just returned & what I see in America is the lust for money & material things (worldly greed) is getting stronger & stronger…so sad. The things we buy can rust, mold, decay, wear out, get scratched & break…& we can’t take them with us when we die. Yes, there are certain things we need…but there’s a diff between need & want.
“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” – Matt 6:24
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.” ~ 1 Tim 6:10
“A greedy man stirs up strife, but the one who trusts in the Lord will be enriched.” ~ Prov 28:25
“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” ~ Matt 6:20

I don’t understand what the big deal is. I find better deals on eBay.

This is nothing compared to the woman who grabbed a knife in the housewares section and stabbed somoene (can’t remember what store) over a product… or the marine, who wasn’t even shopping.. he was collecting toys for tots… who was also stabbed.
I love shopping, but this is ridiculous. some of these deals aren’t even that good & even if they were… really, do we need to turn to violence?!!

I don’t go black Friday shopping. I personally hate black Friday, most of the deals are just like fifteen to twenty percent off or some stupid buy two and get one half off crap. The deals are never any good, but I think people have a mindset that they must be because it’s black Friday and all of the competition makes people ultimately waste more money by buying things that are there just so nobody else will get it. It’s so stupid, especially walmart. Don’t mess with desperate parents trying to get thei kids toys and games… I personally like sales on shaving neccesities, shampoo, conditioner, tooth brushes, yogurt, etc. But walmart never does any sales on that stuff. )=

Also, other businesses close that day! My dog went missing on Wednesday and I couldn’t contact the animal shelter because they were closed, and I couldn’t get anything on Amazon to ship that day because the businesses selling were closed! I was pissed and upset on Black Friday this year!

Stampede! LOL

This is why I don’t go shopping on Black Friday… I went to the mall this year for the first time EVER because this particular mall is an hour away and I was visiting relatives down there, and there is not much in my own area!
People are so ridiculous over material items… Whatever happened to being THANKFUL for what we have? Besides, the deals aren’t even that great unless you’re looking for electronics. I found better deals a few weeks before Thanksgiving in the middle of the week at a local mall. Yesterday was my first time going out on Black Friday, and the stuff I wanted to buy wasn’t even on sale. Psh. What good is that? I ended up just wasting time trying to get into the mall parking lot because there was so much traffic.

Oh my goodness, I would never go Black Friday shopping. People are so greedy and materialistic…I’m so happy that I’m not like that!I tots don’t buy into those kind of things and I’m such a good person. *sent from iphone*
The underlying (though extremely evident) sociological and economical issue here is our system of capatalism. A system that enforces ‘working hard’ just to earn money to buy
things. The system tells us that the more things we have, the more successful we are.
Is it any wonder people strap GAP logos onto themselves? Our economic system has shifted our perspectives and formed our beliefs. Nothing will ever be good enough. That iphone you just got? They’ll be a better and more efficient model next summer. Those trendy flare jeans? SO not cool next season! So yes, we’ll go over to wal-mart, camp out at 3:00am just to get the deal on the latest product. It’s not surprising.
On a side note, lovelyish readers, isn’t it funny how we’re not allowed to have tents and camp-outs for a peaceful protest like Occupy Toronto (or NYC or wherever) yet we’re allowed to camp out for days and hours when it’s benefitting big-name retailers?
Anyways… The system of capitalism reinforces the belief that you’re successful and you’ll be happy if you buy things. And well, duh – that’s kind of what it’s all about – capitalism, that is. Buy buy buy! Obviously they are going to shove that message down our throats… the economy depends on it, after all.
I’m typing this from my Macbook Air. I’m not going to sit here and pretend I’m not influenced by capitalism. I’m not going to pretend to be this perfect person who doesn’t get wrapped up in sales and products – because I do. But at least I REALIZE IT. And at least I have educated myself enough to understand why. Perhaps you all should do the same.
That’s just my two cents! * money reference/pun intended.

I’ve never been to black friday but I have been to boxing day… (I like in the states now but used to live in Canada).. It was never as bad as the horror stories I hear
And I was out at 4 in the morning to get electronics and stuff. I’ve heard of people getting killed out here

i went black friday shopping for the first time this year at midnight, and it really does get to your head. i cussed out someone that cut in front of me in line at victoria’s secret, even though he was doing it as a joke. i was crabby from waiting in line and tired.

I know where that ordeal happened. My friend works at the grocery store in the same plaza. One of his coworkers had to be at the grocery store during the night even though they closed early, but he said the whole parking lot was packed from end to end because people waited for Walmart to open. And, mind you, this plaza is huge! And this area’s known to be upper middle class, so it’s kind of a shock, but predictible to hear only because people get too crazy during Black Friday.

@NinaRose_85@xanga - I agree, people tend to forget that the holidays stand for and get wrapped up in the materialistic part of the commercial holidays they’ve become. I mean, we still give gifts, but we don’t get crazy to get them, and we’ve definitely scaled back on how much we spend, and to who we give them to. And besides, there is no deal so great that I need to camp out for (and miss work without pay). Also, many deals were available online, I prefer to shop online at home in my pajamas sipping hot chocolate.
I stayed home…which turned out to be a great idea, considering the that pepper-spray wielding woman could have been in my neighborhood Walmart!

Never have, never will. It’s amazing, the hypocrites who turn into materialistic herds of animals one day a year.

Walmart’s trashy as all hell. Don’t shop there lol.

I used to think it’d be funny to go and watch the Black Friday madness, but now I think I would actually just leave feeling physically ill over the unadulterated greed
