The idea of acting in a persona is not a new thing (see: Chris GainesJoaquin Phoenix), but creating an alter ego seems to be a trend among current pop stars. Singing starlets we all know and love have been popping up everywhere -- in music videos, at awards shows, on album covers and even in perfume ads -- as someone totally new.

1. Katy Perry A.K.A Kitty Purry A.K.A. Kathy Beth Terry The "Teenage Dream" singer may have lovingly named her cat Kitty Purry as a play on her name, but Miss Perry has since adopted the persona as her own. For the advertisements for her fragrance, Purr, Katy donned a skin-tight cat suit and posed with a giant ball of yarn. She even wore cat ears for the launch party of the perfume. Then, in her video for the single Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.), Katy created a new alter ego called Kathy Beth Terry. Kathy Beth is a nerdy eighth-grader with extreme orthodontics and thick-rimmed glasses. You can even follow her @KathyBethTerry and friend her on Facebook.

2. Lady Gaga A.K.A Jo Calderone Just when we thought Lady Gaga couldn't shock us anymore than she did with her meat dress or her egg-arrival, she threw us for a loop... or is it he? Gaga one-upped herself by showing up to the 2011 VMAs as a man. Jo Calderone, to be specific. Jo sports his hair greased back and can usually be seen smoking a cigarette. He first premiered on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan and can be found on the cover of her single Yoü and I. He can be followed @JoCalderone.

Beyoncé A.K.A Sasha Fierce Beyoncé's alter ego, Sasha Fierce, is more of an emotional distinction than a caricature. Sasha, Beyonce says, is a stage persona. In 2008, she told People magazine, "Sasha Fierce is the fun, more sensual, more aggressive, more outspoken side and more glamorous side that comes out when I'm working and when I'm onstage." B created Sasha for the same reason that all of us may act differently in one setting than in another: she wanted to put away her shy tendencies for the sake of her performance. In February of 2010, Bey claimed to have "killed" this alter ego because she learned to merge the two sides of her personality.

4. Nicki Minaj A.K.A The "Skitzophrenic" Rapper Nicki has the luckiest fan base of all because they don't just love her, they also love Onika, Harajuku Barbie, Roman, Martha and Rosa: her many alter egos. Onika is Nicki's given name, so technically Nicki is an alter ego who exemplifies her Queens/Trinidadian upbringing. Harajuku Barbie is the soft voice featured in "Bedrock," Roman is the crazy-assertive flamboyant male known for "Roman's Revenge" with Eminem, and Martha, the British accent, is Roman's mother. On the George Lopez Show, Nicki introduced the persona Rosa, who is her Spanish-inspired personality. As Nicki continues to appear on television and release new tracks, the world welcomes each alter ego and eagerly awaits the next.

You know whose persona I would love to meet? Adele's. What musicians do you wish had personas? What would your persona be?
