From the perspective of a short person, I’m going to be the first to say that I absolutely hate it. I’m sick of the jokes. I’m sick of the insulting age speculation. I’m sick of feeling cute and not sexy. I combat these insecurities on a daily basis, and in my 23 years I’ve picked up a few illusory tricks to feel a little taller both mentally and physically.
Fashion Monochromatic dressing is important in order to create the illusion of a long unbroken vertical line up and down the body. Experiment with color by not experimenting with color — wear one color throughout. Whether it be with separate pieces, with a dress or with a top paired with the same color skirt.
Heels are the obvious quick fix, and us short girls certainly own a few pumps, but sometimes a girl just wants to walk around in a pair of flip-flops or flats without hearing something brilliant like, “Hey! What happened? Did yah not get enough milk as a kid?”
American Apparel Stretch Floral Lace Bodysuit Medium-pink, from Amazon
Try a pair of skinny jeans/pants and shoes that are a similar color to your top to create a unbroken appearance up and down your body. Adding a blazer with light shoulder padding over a form fitting body suit is a gorgeous look for petite women. I recommend the snappy crotch or thong body suits from American Apparel. They’re elongating and don’t create bulk from shoving extra fabric down your pants. For a night out, don’t hesitate to throw on a high-waisted pencil skirt or a dress that sits well above your knees. Not too high ladies, no one should be getting an eyeful of your Britney. For more on fashion tips that give your profile a taller illusion, check out our past post How To Dress Yourself Taller.Posture: If you’re not in the mood for heels, become more aware of your posture. So many of us have fallen into the habit of slouching without even realizing we’re doing it, so stick that chest out and pull your shoulders back. Not only will you buy yourself a few centimeters, but you’ll also exude a sense of confidence, which is one of the sexiest qualities a person can have.
Hair: If you’re short, you can actually make yourself appear shorter depending on the length of your hair. Hair can consume an already petite frame and take attention away from your figure. Try a medium to short haircut and use a great volumizer for a little added height. Think Eva Mendes and Penelope Cruz.
Exercise: Pilates is one of the few fitness methods that actually elongates your muscles rather than shortening and tightening them. It is a favorite of ballet dancers who need to maintain a long lean physique, which anyone — short and tall alike — can achieve.
Pilates is heavily focused on your posture, resulting in a nearly transformative way of carrying yourself, in turn giving you a taller longer appearance, especially through the abdomen. Truth be told, pilates, can even add some height to your frame. A Pilates instructor once told me that she used to be a little over 5’2 and now she’s exactly 5’3. The pilates method really does lengthen your body and muscles in the most beautiful possible way.
I know what some of you are thinking, uh pilates is expensive. Yes it is. Several sessions can cost you hundreds of dollars a month, so if pilates classes are not within your budget, opt for a pilates DVD like Gaiam pilates core challenge. If the DVD’s aren’t blowing your hair back, get yourself to a yoga class, which are often substantially less expensive than pilates. The class environment also keeps you focused as you twist, stretch and lengthen that petite frame.
Who loves being short and who wishes they were a little taller? What are some ways you make yourself feel long and lean?

I’m 5′ 1″
and saying I HATE it is an understatement
thanks for the tips :)

I’m 5’3″ and if it were possible, I would like to be a few inches taller. I tend to wear flats and sneakers. However, for added height, I’ll wear high heels or boots with built-in lifts.
Anyway, I have a cousin who’s 4’10″ and her bf’s 6’4″. I hear the comments people make about her all the time calling her a spinner if you know what I mean.
guest
i’m 5’3″ and i’m short. i’m curvy too so there’s not much to make me look taller. i definitely wish i was about 2-3 inches taller. my torso is quite long so i do try to make wear longer tops and bottoms that make me appear to be taller. and yes, i wear heels a lot.
guest
It always amuses me when one side wants to be the other side. I am 5’5/5’6 and I would DIE to be 5’3 or 5’2. =P
guest
I’m 5’9″ and I’d give a lot of things to be shorter.
guest
um…elongate your muscles? What?
guest
i’m 6’2″. anyone wanna steal some inches from me? take them, please. lol. there’s too short and too tall. i’m in the too tall spectrum. i’m as tall, or taller, then most guys. it totally makes you feel un-girly/sexy as well b/c you seem manlier. also, jean shopping and shoe shopping? yeah, that’s a bitch.I can only wear capris or short, unless i wanna shell out about $100+ for a designer pair, but fuck that. And if you’re tall, you’re gonna have big feet. Hello, size 10 here. lol. i think a perfect height, for me, would be 5’4″

What is so bad about being short? I’m 5ft 4in and sure it sucks buying jeans but at least most guys are taller than you even wearing heels. I wouldn’t change my height for anything.

I’m short and I love it!

i’m 5’7 and i’m okay but i’ve met lots of short girls who are happy the way they are

There was this once incident when I was at work and this chick came in, I was like Oh my Gosh you’re so short! We laughed and all that but when I went to stand next to her, I was about a centimeter short than her. It was unbelievable…. I really thought she was super short. And I was shorter. Big damn moment
I’m 4’11″.. freakin hate it.
guest
After lots of consideration I think 5’4″ would be splendid
cherry blossom / 27 posts
I’m short and I really don’t love it. Sadly, I don’t consider 5’4″ short. 5’4″ would be ideal!
Good tips though and pilates are amazing.
guest
@numbergirl - Right?! Agree with ya girl

I’m 4′ 11″ and my height is actually one of the few things I was rarely ever teased about. People love my shortness for some reason. It’s not too bad but I do percieve tallness as being more sexy so sometimes that bothers me but we all have things we sometimes don’t like about ourselves so it’s whatever.
guest
I like being short and petite because most guys are bigger than me and I like feeling engulfed by their arms when we hug
I wear form fitting pants and high heels when I want to feel taller.

I love being 5 ft tall… I didn’t always love it, but it is part of who I am and I have really accepted that I have to climb shelves to reach things. I am also mad skinny, so that helps. I don’t ever want to be a meatball like snooki, although I do admire her wild fashion sense.

@bAbiiExxPiNay@xanga - with pilates you strengthen and tone your muscles by stretching them, that’s not to say that pilates doesn’t use resistance and machinery in order to do so. but the entire foundation of pilates whether it’s mat pilates or on the reformer (crazy wonderful apparatus) is to stretch the muscles and thus elongate. If you have any more questions about it, please check out this website because it will answer all of them: http://www.urbanwellness.com/blog/movewell/does-pilates-really-lengthen-your-muscles/

I’m 5ft and think I love being petite more than hate it. The comments about my weight/height used to get on my nerves but now I realize people think they are giving me a compliment most of the time. Sometimes I think to myself though; “What if I went up to an obese person and said ‘OMG you’re so HUGE!!’” It’s the same thing as someone saying “look how tiny you are!” but for some reason I’m supposed to be complimented by it.
Also, the posture thing is 100% true. A friend of mine is the same height as me but she stands with terrible posture. People always think she’s shorter.

yet another body image issue post that just talks about changing yourself. for some odd reason, this irks me.

These are all great tips, but I don’t understand why cute =/= sexy? I feel sexy all the time, and feminine, and CUTE, and I’m just SHORT of 5’0″. Sexy=body and attitude; height=irrelevant. I would absolutely hate to be tall though. Whenever I find the occasional girl who’s shorter than me (who isn’t a child, har har), I get jealous.

“…sometimes a girl just wants to walk around in a pair of flip-flops or flats without hearing something brilliant like, ‘Hey! What happened? Did yah not get enough milk as a kid?’”
I just lol’d. I’m a 5’8″ average-ish person, but I always envied how my vertically challenged friends looked cuter in everything. There’s something about being able to take a person in all at once…the outfits are more effective, you can do more daring things. I can’t wear heels without feeling like a gawky giraffe, and like I said, I’m not THAT tall. It’s all about loving what you have I guess
sunflower / 416 posts
You know, I actually love being short. Here are my reasons why:
1) If something’s too high up, it’s not that hard to get something to stand on. Even better than that, though, are when other people are around. I just ask one of them to do it, and then I don’t have to reach up to get what I need. Then they think it’s cute that I’m so short. If it’s a guy? Even better. Badda boom.
2) If I run into someone that I don’t want to see, I can hide easily behind others. I’m so miniature that I don’t even have to duck. All I do is stand directly behind them and I’ve basically disappeared.
3) I can fit into small spaces easily. Not that I do this all the time, but it’s especially helpful when I’m in a packed car. Yes, I’m always the one who has to sit in the middle… I don’t mind that much, though, because the people sitting on the outside are usually far more uncomfortable than I am. Their knees hit the seats in front of them. Mine don’t.
4) I never have a problem with having pants that are too short. If pants are too long, I can just wear heels or fold them up to make them shorter.
5) People think I’m adorable! Seriously, I’m a chubby little fuck, but I’m so short that it’s not as noticeable. If I was both tall and as chubby as I am now, my gut would be that much closer to people’s eyes. They don’t need to see that! I can hide it more easily since my stomach is lower to the ground.
6) The only bed that’s too small for me is a crib. I can stretch out on couches. I can cuddle up in someone’s lap without falling off. I can be the best little spoon anyone’s ever seen. All because I’m short.

There’s no way to make me look taller! I am short-5’2 and I hate heels!
guest
I wish I were short sometimes.. =( I’m about 5’6 I guess average.
guest
@LeaK - lol…okay but it doesn’t literally make your muscles longer.

If I was 5’6″ or 5’7″, I’d be happy. I have to fold up all my jeans/pants because the “short” labeled ones are always the first ones to sell. Although I prefer flat boots and sneakers, unfortunately I have to wear heels every now and then because that day’s outfit would make me look super short with flat shoes.

@blondiedeam@xanga - I’m 5′ 2″ and a size 9! Feet don’t care how tall you are
guest
@enterthelabyrinth@xanga - it was a joke. they say big people have big feet, and tiny people have tiny feet, at least around here where im from. no need to get sad about it. i’m sorry.
guest
At a whopping 4’10.5″, I also wish I were a bit taller. I look like I got stuck in a 12-year old’s body going through puberty – all hips and butt, no boobs. I always get treated like a child and it’s much harder for me to earn the respect of my peers or people I supervise because they think they can intimidate me. I agree, i’m sick of being cute, but never sexy – always a child, never a woman. Props on the post! Confidence is such a big thing! And i’ll definitely try the pilates
On the opposite side, however, sometimes I do love my height (although I wish I reached 5feet..). I find people remember me more, which is great when networking, since I’m unusually small. Plus, we shorties can date pretty much whomever we want, even while wearing heels!
And although it’s hard to find adult-looking clothes and shoes, shopping in the children’s section is definitely cheaper sometimes!
guest
i like my height, it’s perfect. instead of wishing i was short enough to shorter than the short guys who are cute but too short for me, i just wish guys were taller.
guest
@blondiedeam@xanga - Wasn’t sad…just saying big feet strike us all!
guest
i’m not short, i’m funsize!
guest
@enterthelabyrinth@xanga - oh ok. im sorry. i misread your post. lol. i thought, idk what i thought actually. im sorry. but haha that’s so true. same for small feet. my uncle who’s like 6″2″ had feet like the size of like a baby. i kid you not. he has to wear children shoes haha. xD

I’m 5’2″ … I wish I was two inches taller! ><
orchid / 109 posts
I’m short, 5.15 (1;57m). I was tall when I was a child, but then I stop growing around 13/14. Classic.
I like being small. I often have remarks like “you can pay the children price at the swimming pool !”. But I think that’s a bit jealousy.
I’m small, Skinny, almost no boobs(A-bra) a very tiny waist : I’m not looking like a child, but I’m not looking like a stereotype sexy-female figure. So… I’m not the “typical” sexy women, but I’m seductive. A more “romantic” view of the body shape, that avoid only “sexual attraction”, but more a “global” seduction. Reality ?
If you know how to dress and are confident in your body, your charism will grow, and everything will get better. Believe in you, in your beauty : you are short, your beauty is not.
oh… my fiancé is around 6.3 by the way ! The elf and the pixie … lol

The only thing that sucks about being 5’2 is not being able to reach the coffee mugs in the cupboard. I really wish everyone else wouldn’t stack them there. I think they do it to torment me.
guest
I’m 5’4 and just fine with it. I love my height.
Plus my bf is only 5’7 and loves the fact that I am actually shorter than him so it’s good.
guest
I like my height. I’m 5’4…so without heels rather short, and with heels almost tall. I don’t like feeling “little” beside taller people (esp. other women), but tall people don’t like feeling “massive” sometimes. I think posture is the most important tip. It says something about your personality, which is the part we want to be judged the least just because of the “cute” appearance.

I’m 5’11″ and I have come to love it, although it wasn’t always that way. When you’re tall, you can stick out like a sore thumb very easily. I used to NEVER wear heels because I felt like the jolly green fricking giant next to most girls. Plus I used to be extremely shy and socially awkward, plus I am a klutz, so when you add all those to height, you get a large, self-conscious, bumbling fool
However, I have changed a lot since then and have come to appreciate being a tall girl. I find that I don’t get hit on as much because when I wear heels, I’m taller than quite a few guys at any given bar (and I see this as a plus since I usually do not want to get picked up). Plus I’ve finally found a guy that is taller than me, so I can wear 5″ heels if I want to
I’ve dated 3 or 4 guys that were shorter, and while it wasn’t a piece of criteria in how the relationship was working, it does feel kind of weird being taller than your man. But posture is still important. Slouching looks terrible on everyone, no matter what height, and I still have pretty terrible posture when I’m not focusing on holding my shoulders back and straightening up.
cherry blossom / 27 posts
@bAbiiExxPiNay@xanga - Yeah, it does. Pilates stretch and change the shape of the muscle, making the muscle longer in relation to its width. Let’s try this as an example…you have curly hair and you straighten the hell out of it. By doing so, you just added an inch to your length.
guest
@numbergirl - -__- That’s physically impossible….
First of all, you can’t change the shape of a muscle. That’s genetically determined. You can only make them bigger or smaller. And think about it, How do you make your muscle longer if your bones, blood vessels, and nerves stay the same length? It wouldn’t work.
I’m not denying that pilates are good for the body, however. I’m just saying that to say they actually give you longer muscles is bull.

@not_your_concern@xanga - This hilarious and I can relate completely. I guess it’s more bitter sweet for me than I thought!

I’m 4’11. I weighed 84 lbs when I got married at 19. Luckily my husband looked pretty young for his age too but we still got a lot of comments about him being my older brother. When I was pregnant with my first child, I had SO many people lecture me about teen pregnancies and how irresponsible I was and how horrible my parents must be. They were so embarrassed when I told them I was 23. (and most of them really didn’t believe it) The one thing I hate most about being short is when people think it’s funny to rest their arm on top of my head. Who in the world likes someone else’s armpit right in their face? And I hate to go to a bank or business that has really tall counters. And it’s irritating to be stuck in straight leg jeans. I hate wearing jeans marked “petite” because they always seem like they are made for short fat women with huge hips, they never fit me right. So if I buy a regular pair of flair jeans I have to hem them about 6 or 8 inches and by then they are straight legged. (I refuse to wear skinny jeans) But now that I’m older (27) and I’ve had two children, I have some AWESOME curves. I don’t feel that I’m just cute anymore. I’m drop dead sexy (see pic. lol). I sport a pixie hair cut sort of like Halle Berry’s. So I guess I’m short and I LOVE it.

@bAbiiExxPiNay@xanga - There’s a great deal of science involved in how pilates affects your overall mental and physical health, especially by standards of rehabilitation and the elongation. As a result of stretching and the focus on extension of of postural muscles and overall flexibility one will be standing taller because through the method, their overall posture and range of motion will have changed. I think it’s safe to say that doing certain exercises or activities will garner different results. I’m sure at some point in your life time you’ve heard someone say, he/she has a runners body, or a dancers body, or a gymnasts body, or a swimmers body etc, the point is that certain movements, when performed regularly have different transformative results based on the differing movements and exercises they’re each focused in. Ultimately there is validity in both what you’re saying about changing ones muscles, and the point that I was trying to make, is that through pilates exercises you will notice postural changes that will give you a longer and leaner appearance, and if you’re able to comfortably and naturally stand properly, you will in fact be able to give yourself a few cm’s in height.

I’m only 5′ even, not a hair taller. I love it. I understand that might make me more cute than sexy but I don’t care. I save money on my shoes all the time especially buying kid’s sandals and chucks. I wouldn’t want to be taller and rarely wear heels. I’ve never met a guy who was shorter than me so it’s all good.
I enjoy it and it no longer bothers me when I am teased for being small. I’m a size 6 and a 34DD so I don’t feel at all like a child. Though I must admit I find it annoying to stand around chatting with super tall people. It makes my neck hurt.
guest
I’m short and I’ve always enjoyed it. It only bothers me on very rare occasions when I can’t reach something I need to be able to reach.
guest
I’m 4’10 and love it!!!!!. I have no problems feeling cute one second and sexy the next. I have never perceived being tall with with being beautiful. I love how I fit perfectly in my husbands arms and on his lap. I guess my one complaint is that because I barely have a waist, when I’m pregnant I show faster and my belly protrudes more, making it look like I’m housing triplets. Also only worn heels about 4 times in my life.
guest
I’ve never had a problem with being short, and I don’t know why anyone would.
guest
I’m 5’5″ and you shorties are getting annoying. When dancing, it’s like you all are dancing around the tall person as if they’re a totem pole. When I hug you, your face might end up between somewhere I’m not all that comfortable with (in public
). How do you guys get bread off the top shelf of a grocery store? How sad. I suggest all of you do some Pilates because short people are a new epidemic. I don’t want my son, if I were to have one, to go through the misery of not having a date to prom because he could be mistaken for a girl from behind.
Seriously though, where do you girls live that you’re surrounded by nothing but tall people? Besides from magazines and seeing tall models and celebs, there shouldn’t be too much of a problem unless you’re under 5 feet tall. I think the average height of a girl must have dropped to 5’3″ or 5’2″. At least it feels that way to me. I know hardly any girls that are even near my height.
guest
Also, guys don’t count if you’re a short girl. A guy is almost always taller than most girls. That’s the way it’s supposed to be… in my opinion.

im 4’10″, 20 years old, and still getting mistaken for a 14 year old… thanks for the post!

I am 5’10, I would just love to lose about 3 inches because I meet very few men who are actually taller than me…so be happy with your height!!!! It’s hard to find jeans that are even long enough!!!! and I’m supposed to wear a small, but a small in shirts is always too short!!!! Everything is meant for shorter females because you guys are IDEAL!!!!!! And omg heels, I love them but when I wear them…I look like a giant!!!
guest
i happen to be 5 foot 4.. i don’t see anything wrong with my weight. i’m not short and i’m not tall. infact isn’t that average? i wouldnot want to be any taller or shorter. but i guess that’s just me.

Im 5’4 im pretty happy with it. It doesnt take as much to get up and down from the ground which i do multiple times on a daily basis at work. plus my hubby thinks its adorable that i cant reach things and he has to get them down for me or kill a spider too high on the wall lol. I have had days tho where i could have used another inch or two to make life easier but being short makes me think outside the box and find ways to be resourceful so it works for me.

I’m a little over 5’3″ and I love it
and I had no idea pilates could do that!

I wish I was shorter! I’m 5’8 and I wish I was more like 5’5. I would definitely rather be shorter than taller, because I just feel so big:( I’m not overweight or anything, but I just think that smaller girls are more petite and feminine looking. I feel like there are a lot of outfits that just don’t look cute on me because of my size, and I never ever wear heels because I am just TOO tall with them on. I guess everyone wants what they don’t have!

5’2″ 3/4ths of an inch…
I like my height… Cept when I can’t reach the top shelf in the pantry… Or when my 6’2 + brothers dangle things over my head…
My biggest bother is when bigger people under estimate me and think I’m weak or frail because I’m short…
