Brrr… I don’t care what the calendar says, in my head, November means winter. And along with the good things like sweaters, boots and hot chocolate, cold weather brings about some things we could do without, namely goosebumps, outrageous heat bills and (gasp) skin that’s less than stellar. No worries Lovelies, Margot Grant Witz, Beauty Director at Elizabeth Grant Skincare below offers 5 tips to stay gorgeous all winter long. (P.S. Brooke Shields, Natalie Portman and Kate Hudson are among the celebs that turn to Margot for counsel – the woman was born to beautify!)
5 Cold Weather Skincare Myths: Debunked!
MYTH: SPF is only for summer time.
FACT: This is the biggest myth out there. Even though the sun is shining the strongest in the summer time, it doesn’t mean the sun isn’t out for 365 days a year. Even on cloudy days, the sun can be damaging to unprotected skin. How? UVA rays penetrate even the thickest of clouds, and act as one of the most, if not THE most potent aging factors in the environment. Use a SPF everyday of the year and in 10/20 years you and your baby-soft skin will thank me.
MYTH: “I don’t need to wash my face tonight. I’m not wearing any makeup. And it’s cold… I haven’t been sweating or anything!”
FACT: Even if you’ve been makeup free on a chilly fall day, dirt, oil and environmental residue can make you break out. Not a good enough reason? Think of it this way… all of the air you’ve hit throughout the day has particles in it, sticking to your skin. Once you lay down on your pillowcase, this dirt is transferred, and ready to breed bacteria. GROSS! Change your pillowcase weekly to avoid this, and hair-care residue transfer, from creating a prime pore clogging culprit.
MYTH: “I’m broke from holiday spending and thus can’t afford quality skincare that is expensive.”
FACT:Yes, there are pricier products, but it is not the packaging or the price that matters; it is the active ingredients. Spending tons of dough on a product. Key drugstore brand ingredients include Collagen to firm, a combination of Salicylic Acid & Glycolic Acid to rid & prevent blemishes & oil and Vitamin C to refresh.
MYTH: “I have good genes, I don’t need a skincare routine.”
FACT:Although this is kind of true, it’s also a case of nature vs. nurture. Of course good genes go a long way, but taking care of your skin makes the good genes last. By practicing a good skin care regime, it helps to make sure that the harmful effects of nature don’t take their toll on your skin. Also remember – skin care doesn’t work overnight to take away or resolve your skin concerns, and if it does, its not long term. Take some patience, and 4-8 weeks, with any product to really see the difference.
MYTH: “My skin feels tight because it’s cold out.”
FACT:No, it actually means your face is stripped of its natural oils, kicking your skin into overdrive. What does that mean? It means the appearance of your skin takes a toll. Fine lines may be more noticeable and your skin may break out due to having to produce more oil. All in all, listen to your skin. Skincare is about caring for your skin. Not harming it.

So the first half of the post was probably just setting up the ad for Elizabeth Grant products that are way overpriced lol.

I actually didn’t believe any of these myths. Now if I could only find a way to keep my dry, tight skin moisturized but my acne and pore size under control. Seems impossible from my perspective.

To the people who say they don’t need to wash their face: 90% of the air is made up of dead skin cells.
You have shit all over your face. Wash it off. It doesn’t have to be with a product that has 200 ingredients in it, either. Just cleanse your face every day!

@Cambios@xanga - Emu oil. No acne and it moisturizes. It doesn’t smell great but who cares.

I live in the northernmost capital in the world. I honestly don’t need sunscreen in the winter.

The suggestions sort of don’t fit to myth three. They don’t help me unfortunately.

@emptyabyss@xanga - Doesn’t matter where you live, the sun is still there. Even if your skin looks amazing now, the sun will cause it to wrinkle and age that much quicker. Wearing sunscreen just slows the effects and makes them less noticeable.

@not_your_concern@xanga - Actually, my point in saying its so far north is that the sun doesn’t come up in the winter here. Sometimes maybe for an hour, but that’s always during work hours. It’s something you’ve probably learned about in geography at some point in your life, in the summer the sun is up all day and all night, but in the winter it doesn’t show itself for a few months. It’s like it’s night all the time.

@emptyabyss@xanga - No, what I mean is that the sun is ALWAYS there, even if you don’t see it. The earth circles around the sun. Even at night, you should wear sunscreen. I mean it’s not crucial at night, but the sun’s rays are penetrating the earth’s atmosphere every second of every day.

@not_your_concern@xanga - The suns rays are incredibly weak in the night and thus I find it incredibly pointless to spend money on sunscreen when going out into the dark, just like most people would never put on sunscreen before going out at night. So I feel that I don’t need it.
The reason I wear sunscreen at all is for health reasons and so that my skin doesn’t burn, so both those factors are irrelevant for me in the winter. If I’m getting any sun it’s in such small doses that it hardly matters. I don’t wear it to avoid aging, because I find aging natural and beautiful. If I lived in Spain I would maybe worry about it, but I live in Iceland and I never ever get a tan here.

@emptyabyss@xanga - Well, you don’t really have to put on that much, and sunscreen is generally inexpensive. Not only that, but there are tons of foundations and moisturizers that have SPF. But if you don’t want to wear sunscreen, you don’t have to.
guest
@not_your_concern@xanga - I don’t know if you know this but Iceland is going through one of the worst economic downfalls in the history of western countries so believe me, nothing is inexpensive. Especially a product that isn’t in demand, like sunscreen, because again, it is night here all the time.
I’m not going to wear sunscreen in the dark because I think it’s pointless and I can’t afford it. I don’t know why we’re still having this conversation.

Er, I was just trying to be helpful. No need to get snippety.

@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - i dont wash my face unless im in the shower… then i use whatever i have on hand. no special soaps for me. i take my make up off with a baby wipe and when i do use something special on my face it is a mixture of oats, honey and sugar. i have been doing this for at least 12 years and have never had a break out.. even after having children when your hormones go all wonkey.
i think people put way to much stock in high priced soaps and shit. putting all those chemicals onto the skin you are trying to protect…. doesnt seem right to me.

You’re essentially telling me that you want me to spend $300+ on a line that may or may not work with my skin… No thanks. Not everyone can afford to spend as such. I am perfectly fine with what I have. If I choose to use it.

@not_your_concern@xanga - you don’t need sunscreen in your moisturizer at night for bed. that is ridiculous to say.
sunflower / 416 posts
@waldesau@xanga - I never said that. I just said “moisturizer”, not “moisturizer at night for bed”. Obviously you don’t need to wear sunscreen when you’re sleeping indoors.

@not_your_concern@xanga - oh, okay. when you said “No, what I mean is that the sun is ALWAYS there, even if you don’t see it. The earth circles around the sun. Even at night, you should wear sunscreen. I mean it’s not crucial at night, but the sun’s rays are penetrating the earth’s atmosphere every second of every day.” to me it seemed like you meant for bed, too.
sunflower / 416 posts
@waldesau@xanga - Lol nah, that’s a different story. If you have no plans of going out at night then there’s really no reason to wear it. But if you’re planning on being outside, then yeah, it’s always a good idea.
