Michelle Williams first chopped off her hair in 2007, but then grew it back. Then she showed up to the Cannes Film Festival in May 2010 with it short again. The only problem is that while gay men and women (including this one!) love the pixie-style, according to Williams, most straight men can’t stand it. Even though it turns off the guys, Williams stands by her decision to keep it as it is.

Williams told Elle UK in their December issue:

I’ve really grown into it – I feel like myself with short hair. And it’s been a really long time since I had long hair, five years… Of course, the only people who like it are gay men and my girlfriends. Straight men across the board are not into this hair! I cut it for the one straight man who has ever liked short hair and I wear it in memorial of somebody who really loved it

For those of you who don’t know the full Michelle Williams and Heath Ledger romance story, here’s a short summary: The pair met on the Brokeback Mountain set in 2004 and began dating. In October 2005, Williams gave birth to Ledger’s daughter, Matilda. The couple then amicably broke up in September 2007, three years into their relationship. Heath Ledger died four months later in January 2008.

Knowing this, it’s not surprising that Williams was greatly affected by his death. He played a huge role in her life and is the father of her child.  And he was taken away from them unexpectedly just a little less than four years ago.

Maybe keeping her hair straight is a way for Michelle to say that she isn’t ready to date anyone right now, because the loss of Ledger still weighs heavy on her mind or maybe she just feels like she’s honoring him in a small way and doesn’t want to give it up.

Either way, I think it’s nice of her to keep him in her heart and thoughts like that and I also love her hair short. Good for you, Michelle!

Do you like short hair? Why don’t guys? Do you approve of Michelle Williams’ reason for keeping it short?
