I get thoroughly excited when I check the weather each morning and see that the high as 79 degrees and the low in the mid 60s. This is what makes Floridians smile, therefore, it makes me smile. Reality check: It’s still warm which means I need to see how I can appropriately “rock” a pair of shorts with tights and not look like the above. Worst. Ensemble. Ever.
I rummaged through my piles of clothes and managed to throw together this:
A khaki-colored semi-structured jacket was thick enough to keep me warm but light enough for me to wear all day. I found a similar style like mine:
2-Button Knit Blazer, $39.99 from Charlotte Russe
Underneath I paired a deep purple v-neck I got from Forever 21 and a brown floral infinity scarf. The scarf I have was from last year at Anthropologie here’s one that is not the same one but is similar to my outfit:
Women’s Infinity Scarves, $14.94 from Old Navy
To be honest, I large portion of my outfit is from Urban Outfitters. I tend to shop the sale there because the quality of the clothing ain’t worth the price of full-priced merchandise and I don’t mind if my hypothetical T-shirt happens to fall apart if I only paid $15 for it. Which leads me to the bottom half of my outfit. The shorts are kinda like these:
Heritage 1981 High Waist Striped Shorts, $16.90 from Forever 21
I paired them with an old pair of muted floral tights I got from Target a couple of years ago to go with it. I found these below and thought they were similar (a little more colorful… in fact.. very colorful) and cute:
Flower Print Opaque Crazy Tights By Sheerly Touch-ya, from Amazon
The colors are soft and muted enough to not make it look like the wallpaper drank too many Madras and decided to throw up. Let’s face it, printed tights are hard to pull off. The bolder the print, the more likely they blur any other piece of clothing your wearing, but if the rest of your outfit seems to be rather neutral, crying for a pop of color and some texture. In this case, printed tights can always be an idea. However, if feeling a bit more demure, you can never go wrong with solid colors. To finish my look, I threw on a pair of tan leather boots and went out to play.
To conclude, the concept of shorts and tights can be a little intimidating. I see too many girls at school who wear the low-rise cut-off jean shorts with tights and UGGS. To be blunt, it makes me cringe, but maybe it’s just me and the fact that have gotten used to high-waisted pants/shorts… and I refuse to wear UGGS. Follow your heart.
More outfits to come… hit me with any fashion challenges!
What do you think of shorts in cooler weather? Do you agree with my ways to pull it off? Do you have any other tips?

I feel like shorts with tights isn’t a whole lot different than a shorter skirt with tights. It just offers a bit more security in the ladybits department. I’m a fan if it’s done well and it offers another alternative to boring ole slacks.

@july37@xanga - Agreed (for the most part)

It sucks that the weather doesn’t really change in florida. Ok I’m really sorry but the outfit looks kinda dumb…
I love the pieces but not the look. Is there any place I can find high waist shorts in plus sizes?

I like it. It’s a great way to stretch your summer wardrobe into fall when you live in one of the southern states where it’s cool but not that cool. I’m in Texas and outfits like this are perfect. You aren’t too cold when you’re in class or work and they’re still running the a/c and you’re not too hot when you’re outside. It works if you’re into the layering trend and live somewhere with a mild fall temperature I think.

i actually think this is really cute.
and you can mix and match different colors/cuts to suit your style/mood/temperature.
i live in the mojave desert (the northern part of so cal than no one talks about, actually closer to las vegas, than i am to LA..) and today being nov, 1, and its 80 ish degrees out. my cute fall wardrobe doesnt quite equate to these temperatures. i;d say this outfit is a win, kudos.

I could completely understand. What do you tend to wear when it comes to fall/winter where you live? How do you keep yourself warm but trendy at the same time? @july37@xanga -

I found a great pair of trouser shorts from forever 21+. I think it accentuates the goods with out being too short or too tummy focused. http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=plus&Category=faith_bottoms&ProductID=2000022441&VariantID= @MangoWOW@xanga -

Let’s agree to disagree. I will always be a fan of shorts in tights because sometimes when I wear skirts, they tend to ride and and become too short. When I studied abroad from Europe this summer, I think my style conformed to what I saw around me. I do however love wearing a decent skirt with tights when i go out in the evening! I appreciate your reccomendation @Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook -

@Dollarlikemoney - Those shorts you found at F21 are super cute!

I am not a fan of those shorts, at all. But the general idea, I approve of.

I dunno, I think shorts with tights are really hard to pull off… I live in Texas, so it’s about that time of year when chicks try to do this but usually fail. The shorts in this photo throw me off. They look too summery for the rest of the outfit, which has a rich purple, brown, and other “fall” colors throughout. the material makes them look like they are too summery. Maybe that’s it. I do love it from the waist up, though. It’s just the white, summery shorts that make it weird for me. I would try it with a rich navy, that would look nice.
(First picture makes me laugh. I went to Target yesterday and saw at least a dozen girls wearing roughly that get-up.)
As for me, I love a skirt with tights. I am super short, though, so a skirt will never be too short for me and if I choose the right tights and shoes, I can make myself look a little taller.

Can’t say that I’m a fan… Between the high-waisted shorts and the 3/4-length sleeves blazer, the whole outfit looks ill-fitting… Plus I hate shorts with tights.

Idk man. It’s risky. lol I’d probably be shivering the entire time. Because I go out at 9 at night here and it’s already 37 degrees. (I live in the Pacific Northwest) I wear jeans, a shirt, maybe a cami, and a jacket, a scarf, and gloves, and I’m still cold…
I would die if I was in tights.

I think you look awesome. Tights are pretty understated. I wouldn’t rock RED tights with it, but the black is fab.

Honestly, I love this outfit. I LOVE shorts with tights and I LOVE high waisted shorts. This outfit is perfect for 60-70 degree weather, in my opinion. Plus, I’m into the whole indie style that is similar to Urban Outfitters, kind of like you said in the post. I think the outfit is adorable

i wear shorts with tights and knee high socks in the colder weather

Perfect for autumn in North California. Kinda breezy but not too cold, especially when bicycling.

I’ve been wearing tights with shorts for a few years now. Not so sure about the floral tights though, it could very easily make the outfit look too busy (I’m definitely a minimalist).

I looove wearing shorts with tights. I definitely think it’s acceptable.

I generally like shorts with tights during those transition fall days when it’s cold in the morning but moderate during the day. It’s just another option like skirts.
However, I don’t like those shorts. I’d choose a pair less high waist or in a darker color. Light AND high waist with dark tights looks silly and is unflattering.

haha i live in florida!! this is like the best weather everr <3 but i like the outifit but i think it would’ve been better with like some brown oxfords

I think shorts & tights look good as long as you’re not Asian… (this is coming from an Asian person) .. Just my personal opinion.

A lot of people in my place wear shorts with leggings and boots, either that, or they wear a big winter jacket with just black leggings underneath. This style isn’t new from where I come from and it seems that the girls wear it all year long.

pass. i don’t think the fashion looks good on anyone. it just seems very impractical. then again, i prefer skirts over shorts any season of the year.

@baby__chiiq@xanga - Haha, for some reason, I agree with you. I hate it when they do the shorts and tights combo with Ugg boots 82384 sizes too big.

@Dollarlikemoney - Mmm in fall, i wear my leather jacket, jeans a sweater(if it is really cold) and a tank top with a cute top with sneakers. when it gets past -13 i whip out the ol’ winter jacket and jeans and wear the same thing with the top and boots, with a fur lining.

get it guuuuuuuurl : )
also, fashion is very subjective. i don’t really see the point in someone telling anyone else they look ridiculous… who’s to say it is? perhaps you just don’t see it from a certain perspective. the lines are blurred when it comes to preference and likes/dislikes.
