Look how Emma Watson kills it in this dreamy cream ensemble. Jumping the seasonal line, neutral tones for fall and winter are a compositional dream. That is to say, wearing a muted lip color is like casting your eyes for a leading role. A superneutral is thrilling to me because it’s total control. It truly goes with anything, and while subtly complementing any outfit, when used right, a peachy tone can be what sets off an entire outfit or a moody face of makeup.

Superneutral makeup and nails are one way to get this look. Right now my go-to polish is Deborah Lippmann’s Fashion, which goes with everything, and keeps my hands looking neat. One coat is enough to make nails look muted and glossy. I know it’s pricey, but it stays put like no other. It’s worth it, I promise!

The appearance of a subdued lip is another way to let your eyes shine or flaunt a killer coral cheek stain. So my favorite and most universally wearable lip color is a creamy translucent gloss by Laura Mercier. It won’t make your lips disappear like some matte lip colors, and it’s great for playing down your lips for any skin tone, so you can play up something else!

As much as I hate to admit it, Jessica Simpson has proven to be a darn good footwear designer. Her glossy, peachy pumps this season are… perfect. And as we pointed out in previous posts, the neutral pump can add an illusion of longer legs as well as set off a colorblocked ensemble.

Set off olive or dark skin with a superneutral around the neck for effortless sophistication.

And of course, these are just the basics. I hope they help you get empowered to incorporate effortless superneutral tones into your wardrobe.

What do you think about these washed-out tones? How are they best pulled off in your opinion?
