Xanga user AubreyBird asked:
I did the trial-run for my halloween makeup today. The goal is to look like a ragdoll, but i’m not sure how well I pulled it off.This is only the makeup; the costume is going to be a dress with tights, mary janes, and fingerless gloves. My hair will be down and with a big lace bow headband.
The dress itself isn’t patchwork (though it is kind of doll-like), so I’m not sure if people will be able to tell that I’m dressed as a ragdoll. Other than adding false eyelashes, which i will be doing, and more black “seams” on my chest and arms, i don’t know what to do.
Suggestions?
Oh wow! Those baby doll lashes make quite the statement on their own — can’t wait to see what an extra impact the false ones make! We’re into it. The stitches really make it a golden costume!
What says you, Lovelies? Does AubreyBird have an excellent plan mapped out or do you have a suggestion to make it even better?

It’s perfect, I wouldn’t change anything. Except maybe add glitter, but not because ragdolls have them, because I’m kind of a whore.

I think if you put the seams in the places that they would actually be on a doll that it would look a bit cleaner I guess is the word.

I love it! Perfect.

Thank you everyone for the lovely comments!
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - haha
@andreaaaaah - I guess i loosely based it on Sally from nightmare before christmas, since she had seams all over the place. But yeah, I’ve never actually seen a doll with seams like that. :/
@winterEnds@xanga - Funny because i have naturally curly hair that i had straightened a few months ago. But now I’ll definitely think about bringing some ringlets back for Halloween. I guess that is pretty traditional on dolls.
@crazypassions@xanga - I used heavy stick concealer since it lays on really thick. Then just a ton of power to set it. It doesn’t taste good, btw. haha

@crazypassions@xanga - also, ***powder*** though I’m sure power helps. whoops. :P

@Welcome_To_Your_New_Obsession@xanga - I originally was going to make a yarn wig (because I’m a broke college student with no money…) but I don’t know if I’m going to have time.
It would have looked something like this: http://www.dascheap.com/costumes/gothic-rag-doll-wig-one-size-fits-most-adults.html
@heart_leigh@xanga - aw thanks!

@AubreyBird@xanga - ooooh cool! I love that!

Looks good! You did a really great job
I think it looks great just the way it is, but there are some things you could tweak as well. of course it also depends on the type of look you’re going for.
I find very commonly dolls have very large eyes.
you can achieve a larger looking doll type eye by putting white liner on your lower water line and bringing it just below the lash line, then put the doll lashes just under that. it’s hard to explain
But here’s a picture!
or you could add false lashes lower than your eye, like this somewhat trashy picture but still gets the idea across.
I really don’t know if that would even really work with your make-up because you already have a lot going on so it may make it too “busy” looking ??
also the picture posted above is without the false lashes so with those included it may be more than enough with the make-up that you don’t need to do anything else.
and like i said, i do love it the way it is! Just wanted to share an idea if it’s something you’d be interested in trying
Hope you have a great time! And i hope we get a follow up post with the finished product of the entire head to toe look!

@arsenic_and_red_lace@xanga - wow, i never even thought about that. I like the first idea with the white liner on the water line. I think that’ll give the effect, but less obviously than the falsies, if that makes sense?
Thanks for the idea!! I’m pumped to try it!

@arsenic_and_red_lace@xanga - also, great username. Arsenic and Old Lace is a fantastic book and amazing movie. <3 Cary Grant

This is SO awesome.

@AubreyBird@xanga - lol Thanks! I wanted to put my user name as arsenic and old lace but it was already taken
So i just changed it a bit and that works!
yeah, I’m not a huge fan of the look of the false lashes sitting below the lash line (like in the second picture)
The first one looks alright because it’s drawn on and it’s just very slightly below the lash line.
i think with your makeup you don’t need to do too much more so just lining your waterline should be effective enough. i think you kind of have to decide if it’ll be the patchwork or your eyes that are the focal point, apposed to doing both really extravagant, you know?
I hope it all works out! Hope you’re able to post a finish product picture later

You’re so cute
Your face fits the costume so well, I feel like most people would look weird with it.. but you can pull it off! Haha. I like it ^_^ I hope you have a cute dress to go with it

@arsenic_and_red_lace@xanga - I definitely agree. Thank you so much for the advice! I’ll post follow-up pics for sure.
@ToMarilyn@xanga - Thank you so much!! I wish I could go out and buy something patchwork (or had the sewing skills to make it) but unfortunately I couldn’t really afford to spend any money on Halloween this year (the only thing purchased are the false eyelashes, and I had a target gift card for that), so the dress is just something out of my closet. I think it’ll work, though.

Wow, that looks amazing!!! I’m not sure how you could improve it!
guest
the makeup looks great. i would just make sure your hair’s got some curl or wave to it and maybe a little teasing for the doll-like volume. i dressed up as a raggedy anne-type doll for work a couple of weeks ago and wore my hair in pigtails because its already red, but i wouldn’t recommend it unless you have thicker hair because in my case they ended up looking insubstantial and a little sad lol. i think your idea’s really original and your costumes going to come out great!

i like it! reminds me of sally from the nightmare before christmas
