Did you hear that? I think it was the sound of dozens of Cali teens mourning the sick reality of sporting skin reflecting the seasons.
Just kidding, there are other options to get a similar glow—and we get into that later—but last week California became one of the first states to outlaw minors from tanning salons.
Gov. Jerry Brown signed off on a new law barring anyone under 18 from using a tanning salon. California became the fifth state to solidify such a law, following New York, Illinois, Rhode Island and Ohio. Over half the states now have at least a few age restrictions on bake box use.
The law goes into effect Jan. 1, 2012.
May sunless tanning always be the preferred option to baking your skin for decades of mad damage to enjoy—not to mention a seriously increased risk for abominable skin cancers including melanoma. [via TIME]
Here’s one of our favorite self-tanners. The best feature is its gradual approach to color—that way you’re less likely to get splotching from a booming one-time tanner.
Sublime Bronze – Gradual Self Tanning Lotion, 6.7 Oz., (L’oreal), $9.99 from Amazon
And as always with sunless tanner, be sure to be diligent about exfoliating beforehand.
OR, you could always look up your local spray tan joint…

Honestly, I think going to a tanning bed is ridiculous. I can’t believe parents let their kids do it, and I’m glad this law is in place. Hopefully other states will follow suit.

I turn yellow and red, so I try to not tan. I don’t care what I look like anymore.

Why would you go to a tanning bed in sunny California? Sunshine is free (for now)!
daisy / 639 posts
I don’t understand why people think going to a tanning bed is better…. isn’t it cheaper (and it’s obviously safer) to buy your own? Instead of laying down and having something else do the work for you? Lazy people.

@NCTHope@xanga - Our club has an age limit and every week we get angry parents complaining because we won’t let their kids tan. I had to pull a lady aside because she was going to put her 3 year old in there. She said she wanted to get her ready for the beach?

@tsh44@xanga - Wow. That’s messed up!

@NCTHope@xanga - I am fully convinced that many parents of 3-10 year olds have completely lost their minds. I feel so sorry for these kids they’re going to have some serious issues when they hit the teen years.
guest
@tsh44@xanga - Agreed. It’s so sad.
daisy / 647 posts
@Grtt@xanga - I agree with you. It’s not going to stop anyone from going outside and baking their flesh. People might even go to degrees of rubbing vegetable oil all over themselves. I know some pretty self obsessed people that would go to such extremes.
Vanity truly is one of the 7 deadly sins because if desperate enough, people will do whatever to look “beautiful”.

Good. It should be illegal.
guest
@Grtt@xanga - Not every place in “sunny” California is sunny. Especially during winter in northern cali. It’s mostly just storms and wind up here. Not that I think that’s an excuse for tanning beds. People should really be more aware of the crap they put in and on their bodies.

I think excessive tanning looks unnatural and unattractive but it’s best to use sunless tanners if you really just can’t go without altering your skin color. I’d usually be one of an opinion that there should be education rather than making something illegal, but with all these immature children and their quite possibly willing parents, making it illegal until 18 might just give some teenagers time to mature and become educated about the health of their skin.
ranunculus / 3457 posts
@Grtt@xanga - I read an article once that in a way, tanning beds are better because you know the exact amount of rays you’re exposed to, rather than baking outside, which you won’t know the exact amount or anything.
I’m still glad for this law, and I’m sure kids will be also when they’re the only people in America who don’t have leather skin at 30.

@tsh44@xanga - A THREE year old? I feel like people should play out that Final Destination 3 scene to people like that….

I tend to avoid the sun
that’s probably why I look at least 10 years younger than I actually am while some of my peers look prematurely aged due to tanned skin and other habits, such as smoking, etc.

Finally California passes a law I agree with.

I find myself searching for a “Like” button on this.
I used to tan in a tanning bed. In Florida. Something about those expensive lotions and the ability to measure the amount of sun you were getting. I can’t explain the appeal, other than that I always wanted a real tan (I’m very pale). One time I got a massage and then went to the tanning bed. The oil on my skin started to cook. I smelled like a French fry and I realized I was voluntarily lying in a frying pan.
Glad so many people are smart enough to just skip this process completely. And to have kids banned from it altogether, there literally isn’t a downside.
guest
they should ban everyone from tanning beds
guest
i use tanning beds & sunless tanners, & while they are bad for you, some people really do go overboard with it, but to each there own; theres honestly no use in bashing people who use tanning beds. i feel that the the later you start tanning the better though. i have a friend who’s gone tanning so much since she was 14 that by the time she was 18 she had white sunspots all over, not a good way to be. & by the time you’re 18 you’re more mature. but having a law that bans minors from tanning is the only real way it won’t happen.
guest
i would never go to a tanning bed…i used to lay out in my teens but now I’m trying to cover up to prevent skin cancer…i’ll just be pale!
guest
Teens haven’t watched Final Destination yet. :d
guest
@Sun_Starflower@xanga - I’ll never get over that scene. What a horrible way to die!
guest
They are surrounded by ocean on one side of the state. I say make the drive and enjoy the sunshine.
Natural tans look better anyway.
guest
What is up with this obsession with tanning anyway? Can’t we all just be comfortable in our own skin?
guest
I really don’t understand why young girls want to subject themselves to cancer. It’s just like people my age who smoke. We’ve learned the risks, but people choose to partake in these activities anyways.
guest
ugh…doesn’t California have more important things to do? Leave these kind of decisions to the individuals.
guest
@Chibi_Son_Gokou@xanga - Better enjoy it while it lasts, it’s not going to be long until something else ridiculous will come up.
While I do live in the sunny part of California, I do not participate in tanning. Not the beds, sunless creams or lounging around outside. At least not any longer. I’ve spent many summers swimming at the local Y as a kid…when I used to actually tan. Can’t do that any longer. Being tan is not a priority for me. If I think I look so pale that I look nearly sick, then I will very lightly dust my face with bronzer.
guest
@bAbiiExxPiNay@xanga - California does have more important issues, but it seems like the politicians are not interested at this point. It’s just too bad that the majority of people I know don’t care so my vote doesn’t seem like it ever counts. Very sad situation.
rose / 791 posts
@bAbiiExxPiNay@xanga - why should CHILDREN be allowed to lie in tanning beds? It’s not banning adults – it’s banning innocent children from things they don’t know the risk of…very sensible.
sunflower / 353 posts
I’m naturally tan, so I don’t need any tanners. Children (that includes teenagers) have no business going to tanning salons.
guest
@bAbiiExxPiNay@xanga - …. Kids are stupid, hasnt anyone told you that yet?
guest
@tsh44@xanga - WTF!! People are messed up! I am glad Cali did that
If youw ant to tan, buy fake stuff or… I dont know.. Go out in the sun?… If thats not an option.. Well.. I guess they would be happy to get skin cancer? @Sun_Starflower@xanga - Bwahaha.. Another reasons I do not tan
Btw, that one was like.. the best Final Destination
guest
@written_conversations@xanga - @bbanmen420@xanga - No, PARENTS are stupid. Proper education will have a much better effect. Plus, a shit ton of taxpayer money went into writing this law, so it’s a little sad that we focus on this when we’re having a fucking budget crisis. Cities all over the state are about to roll under because they are in so much debt and here we are making laws to further restrict people’s natural rights. That’s my only problem.
guest
Yay for banning tanning beds! I think they should ban them altogether. They are cancer-in-a-box, and for people who are VERY into tanning and really don’t give a hoot about their future health (just do a Google image search for skin cancer – ouch & eeew), then go lay out under the sun. At least it’s not AS bad as the tanning bed.
guest
Good. I can’t fathom why young girls would want to ruin their skin, and I really can’t fathom why a parent would allow it if they do.
Huzzah for being pale.
rose / 791 posts
@bAbiiExxPiNay@xanga - but why should innocent kids have to suffer thanks to their parents stupidity?

I suppose that is a good thing. Where I live some places make you have parental consent if you aren’t 18+ but not all.

Orrrr you could just skip the self-tanners and orange spray shit and use products that make your natural skin glow. I personally envy the fair, porcelain doll look.

I’m Italian. I’ll stick with my ‘spend time in the actual sun’ idea.

Good for California. I look years younger than most of classmates because I never tanned. When I went to my parents bedroom, and saw my dad’s back
completely
covered in staples from where cancer had been removed….let’s just say I got an even more important incentive to stay away from baking. (My dad was one of those shirtless tractor drivers. T__T )

why are white people trying so hard to be like black when they are not? Why aren’t they satisfy of just be who they are?
(for those unaware, this is a parody to those white people saying Asian wants to looks like white b/c Asian preferred pale skin and it is NOT because of white people.)
let the b*tch storm begin heheh
guest
Good. The sun can cause damage, sure, but it’s safer than a tanning bed. Most people under 18 don’t have the ability to think in the long run when it comes to their health.
@wenguang@xanga - I
wouldn’t say black, but definitely “brown” like they are Hispanic or
South Asians haha. At least the “Asians wanting to be white” thing can
be explained away and clearly is BS. Not…sure…how to explain tanning
and how it became a beauty standard. I’m not even sure it’s considered
beautiful (white person being tan), more like “hot” or possibly sexy.
guest
Good! Haha.

Good. Watch, all the teeny boppers are going to be hitting up the tanning beds like they’re storing up tans for the winter (just kidding)
I never could understand the point of tanning beds. Any kind of tanning is terrible for your skin! What’s the point of looking tan for a month or two when you’ll get wrinkles, sunspots, uneven skin texture + tone in the long run?! The sun’s rays break down the collagen in your skin which also contributes to cellulite! If you like the look of being tan, there are always one-time self tanners AND gradual self-tanning lotions for those who are worried about it being uneven.
But hey, an age limit is better than nothing.

Why would people in CALIFORNIA need a tanning bed to begin with? Quick being lazy and go outside once in awhile.
I lived in Arizona for 22 years. People used to say, “how often do you go to a tanning bed to get that incredible tan!?” My response was always a confused “uhhh… I don’t do those… I just work outside…” Seriously, try it sometime.
guest
Nothing wrong with pale skin. Some other cultures actually like that
guest
lol. i think naturally tanning is better…you can tell when someone goes to a tanning bed or something. not attractive at all
guest
it’s addictive and causes cancer…I would equate it to smoking
peony / 2 posts
making tanning beds illegal for people under 18 is kind of a far stretch in my opinion. i think 16 with parents permission would be a better number. by that age people are really making a lot of their own decisions anyway. we have 16 year olds that are buying cigarettes, drinking in clubs, etc.
Also, for those that are 100% against tanning beds should reevaluate their life choices. I mean are you all against drinking, smoking, staying up late, yellow #5, etc. get my drift? It is each persons decision whether or not to do things that are potentially harmful. and what about those of us who do not smoke but are subject to the harmful chemicals in 2nd hand smoke? does that seem fair?
guest
I used to tan when I was like 13-15, but realized how bad it is for you. It looks disgusting as well and makes you smell like burnt ass and also gives you skin cancer! My great grandpa and my grandma had skin cancer, so I’m not about to risk it any more. I’m happy with my pale skin.
@Sun_Starflower@xanga - AHHHH! That is one of the worst deaths in Final Destination!

Lol, that rap is awesome. As for tanning beds, well, I tan, or I used to about two years ago. I plan on going again next summer, but I’m not one of those people who goes every day. Maybe about twice a week for a couple of months. I just like being slightly tan.
guest
good. i say ban it altogether.
when will girls learn that they look cheap and nasty with fake tan?
some people are pale, some people are tanned–
it’s what you were dealt in life, so suck it up and move on.
guest
@ashleyrhea - eighteen is not a far stretch at all. this is the earliest age that you are considered an adult, and if other things can be an eighteen, why not this?
“Also, for those that are 100% against tanning beds should reevaluate their life choices” — why? because i don’t want skin cancer?
(and before you ask, i’m not some mormon that doesn’t drink or do anything at all)
maybe i don’t get it, as i’m half asian and therefore not the palest girl, but when i see girls wandering around looking like they fell in vat of orangeade, i fail to see the fixation with tanning beds.

I don’t think the drinking comment works, because it’s been proven that small amounts of alcohol are actually healthy. Just like the sun is healthy. Why not get your sun exposure and vitamin D from natural sources, not some artificial box inside? Or, if you’re that desperate to get a tan, use a spray. Tanning beds are just not necessary for children. Adults? Sure, once you’re 18, go ahead, but anyone under that age shouldn’t be allowed to make that kind of potentially life-changing decision.
About the second hand smoke comment – you have the ability to move. I don’t smoke. I hate it, but if I’m around someone who smokes, I have the ability to walk away. Nobody is forcing you to sit in a tiny box with people who smoke.
guest
I think it’s good that there are age restrictions. The younger they start, the worse the damage. I think it’s ridiculous, stupid, unnecessary & vain for people to go to a tanning bed anyway. All states should have an age restriction limit. 21 years or older.
guest
I did tanning once a week for three months when summer classes began. All of my friends have been tanning since highschool but after three months for me I had a mole removed. Eff that.
guest
Ummm, Why Would Teens Need To Tan Indoors? It’s California!!!!
guest
1) I tan, and was actually just asked if I got back from vacation. Tanning relies on the bed you go in, and the lotion you use. Tanning does not always equate to orange/unnatural.
2) I would be very pissed off if I was that one girl who couldnt tan for my prom. I tan for special occasions, and prom was my first time tanning. I dont see why people care so much anyway. My tan isnt harming you, is it?
guest
honestly, i like my girls pale and enjoy being pale. that way i don’t have to worry about either of us being cancer-ridden!
guest
Going to a tanning bed is stupid – however, people have the right to make stupid decisions that don’t affect others. I hate moronic nanny-state laws like this. Perhaps we should pass a law that says people with the last name Brown wan’t allowed to bathe more than once a week “to cut down on wasting water”.
Yet another moronic law signed by Jerry “The Jackass” Brown.
guest
@theklaaa@xanga - Because, these people think that they have the right to tell you what to do. Nevermind that this whole country was founded on the notion of telling tyrants to go to hell, these people know better than you about everything!
It’s people like that and Jerry Brown that make me hope that an asteroid smashes into the planet and kills off the human race. We’re too far gone to survive.

About the only thing I see tanning beds for is getting a bit of sun before leaving on vacation to a sunny spot. I live in a state where the sun is basically an urban legend in the winter (and fall, and spring), so if my family goes to Florida or somewhere over Christmas, my parents will fry! So I understand going for one or two short visits for that reason, as I’ve seen how it helps.
Personally, tanning beds freak me out. They just don’t seem clean. I know that they are, but it doesn’t seem like it to me, haha. Besides, I prefer the pale look on myself. It goes way better with my features.
Just wondering how young the ban will reach? I think 18 seems a bit high to decide if you want a tan or not. At least they could do 16&17 can with parental permission or something. It’s just weird that in many states (mine, at least), you’ll be able to drive and consent to sex before you’re able to pay for a tan.
guest
Skin cancer is going to be the leading cause of death in the next 20 years i’m sure. I refuse to be in a tanning bed, mostly cause I’m claustrophobic. But there’s better ways to get a NATURAL glow. In a tanning bed, you turn orange. I can’t say much because I look tan all year round because of my heredity. But sunless tanners can be an alternative. I know that some lotions on the market now can give you a HEALTHY sun kissed glow. Yes I’m hitting the idea of natural and healthy, but $500 a month for tanning sounds really stupid especially if you turn orange and have white around your eyes like a reverse raccoon with skin damage.
magnolia / 1066 posts
That’s wonderful to hear. I don’t understand why people use tanning beds anyway.

@ShirleyD@xanga - @Sun_Starflower@xanga - haha! The first time I used the tanning bed that is ALL I kept thinking about. It really discouraged me from returning!

I go to the beach and wear buckets of sunblock, but somehow I still come back golden and I LOVE it. I’d never allow my under aged child to use a tanning bed. wth, you get a tan when you go play outside. If not, you just wait for the summer like the rest of us!
anyway, the gradual tanning lotion/bottle… makes my sensitive skin itchy. so i can’t even use that. O_o
