I know, for some people, that may sound gross. I’m sure many of you take showers and shampoo your hair with nice products every day.
But recently, I’ve read that more and more people are switching it up. I decided to try conditioning my hair only, instead of shampooing and conditioning, to see what would happen.
And nothing happened! That is to say, my hair is of the exact same quality. So why would I use two products when I only need one? I’m saving money, and avoiding subjecting my hair to excess chemicals.
I took it a step further, then, and started conditioning my hair only two to three times a week. The more you wash your scalp, the more your skin goes, ‘Oh noes! All of these oils are being stripped away, so I should produce more!’ So excess washing means oilier skin. Fancy that.
I’ve now successfully trained my hair to need less product less often, and I’m loving it!
Lovelies, what’s your hair care routine? How often do you shower/wash your hair?

Sometimes I’ll go two days without shampooing and conditioning. My hair gets really greasy though.

I’m sure there’s a period where your hair is oily and gross in the beginning until your scalp stops over-producing oil…and I don’t have time to hide my dirty hair from the world until my skin balances itself out. Shampooing doesn’t inconvenience my life much and I also enjoy having really yummy-smelling hair, so I don’t think I’ll kick my shampoo habit any time soon.

I do conditioner only once a week. I have an extremely dry scalp and I’m mildly allergic to shampoo and only use it once every 6 weeks to clarify my hair and chelate hard water build up. My hair and my scalp have never been healthier.

I have really thin hair so this has never worked for me

Please. Be my twin.
So, for me, it started about two or three years ago. I saw a Wen conditioner infomercial and was sold. After looking at the price tag, though, I wondered if it was really worth it. What makes Wen any different than, say, Suave? Research. Turns out, not only are they pretty much the same, Suave is even better for conditioner-only because it has more cleaning agents. More research turned me to “curly girl,” which you can look up yourself. It’s basically conditioner-only method. After over a year of research, research, and more research, I now only wash my hair about three times a week with a solution of a splash of apple cider vinegar with 16 ounces of water. It has been said that there’s a transition period between washing everyday and cutting down, but I didn’t experience anything like that and I think it’s because of starting out with conditioner-only.
Because of all the research, I now live a more natural lifestyle, almost 100% free of gross chemicals (my mom still insists on doing my laundry, and she’s not exactly using 7th generation… And I’m dyeing my hair red in two weeks with a regular box dye because I’m kind of afraid of using henna.) I’m just glad I’ve figured it all out now, while I’m young. It’s even lead me to a more minimalistic lifestyle. Funny how one thing leads to another, yeah?

I wash and condition my hair daily but I’m prone to grease if I don’t. I’m not a fan of dry shampoo but my hair is still shiny and beautiful even shampooing everyday.

that’s nasty. that;s like using lotion instead of soap in the shower. disgusting. that;s like a cover up. And I wash and condition my hair every 4 days. I use 2-1 shampoo + conditioner.

I quit using commercial shampoo at the end of September and so far I love it
Right now I’m using a baking soda and water mixture to help with the great and apple cider vinegar as well

I think it depends on your hair. I used to wash every other day, but my hair is way too fine do do that anymore. My mom has much dryer, coarser hair, and she can wash it every 2-3 days and it does great.
I’d love to use less product, but for now, I’ll have to stick with my normal routine

pass. i love shampoo
especially the kind i use now that smells like grapefruit.

i use sulfate-free shampoo, but only a few times a week. sulfates are what strips the moisture from your hair. ive definitely been intrigued about the “no ‘poo” idea though. i will be brave enough to try it eventually.

I shampoo my hair every day but of course I use horse shampoo and that has been a big impact in my hair. I’m surprised really.

I wash and condition my hair every other day. I have sebhorric dermatitis, so if anybody knows of anything that will help I would appreciate the tip. I’m on a topical steroid foam for it. None of the medicated otc or prescription drugs help control it. I’ve tried just about everything but nothing works.

I only shampoo my hair once every 2-3 weeks, and my hair is gorgeous. My stylists always comment on how incredibly healthy my hair is. Especially for you curly girls – stop shampooing!! It destroys the curl and makes your hair frizzy. It’s a little weird for the first couple weeks, and your hair will be oily, but after your hair adjusts to not being stripped of its natural oils on a daily basis, it will be SO much healthier. I’ve been on this regimen for about three years now and my hair is beautiful, shiny, and not frizzy at all (it used to be SUPER frizzy because my hair is so fine, but not anymore).

shampooing and conditioning isn’t much work and totally worth the convenience and reassurance that my hair is ‘clean.’
i used to use it for a few months but then i feel like from shampooing with it every day it made it like…break? sort of? like split ends but crazy? idk. i still use it like once a week, though.
@Hinase@xanga - HORSE SHAMPOOOOO

@annamariuhh@xanga - Yeah, it’s still pretty good. I haven’t had split ends in a long time though. Lol

I like to wash my hair with shampoo every other day. I struggled to find shampoos without toxic chemicals and no animal testing. Much of what is sold is also of poor quality.

I wash my hair bi-weekly. I’ve been conditioning it only as of lately because I coloured it and it damaged my hair a bit

I’ve tried the whole “don’t wash your hair” thing. (Well, not for the reasons you’re stating, but because I’m really unmotivated during the weekends and sometimes I’ll go three or four days without showering. Yeah I’m a lazy fuck.) I wish my hair could handle it, but it gets so unimaginably greasy! Even though I have thick hair with plenty of split ends, not washing it produces more oil than I need. Some days I’ll skip the shampoo, but most of the time I have to wash it – otherwise it feels heavy and dirty.

Do you shower daily with or without a shower cap?
I’ve always wanted to do this but was too afraid to commit because of the transition period that I’ve heard is a bit of a pain and I have bad dandruff.
guest
I do water only. We have really hard water at my house so once every 6 weeks to 2 months I end up using baking soda and apple cider vinegar to “shampoo” and my condition my hair. It works great, my hair is the thickest, fullest, healthiest, most full bodied it has ever been and it also always behaves when I’m trying to style it! The best part is that it’s been 6 months since my last hair cut and I don’t have a single split end!

when I tried the ‘old condition’ thing, my hair turned into a grease ball

By the way, I don’t think anyone’s mentioned this, but the picture on this article is REALLY creepy. That girl looks like she’s getting ready to bring a machine gun to the state fair.

I try to wash only every other day, this is an improvement over every day like how I washed my hair previously. Soon I am going to try washing only 3 times a week. I hate that the oils from my scalp stays at the roots making my hair super greasy looking but the ends are dry and split. I guess I do need to splurge and spend the money on a great natural bristle brush so I can better distribute the oils.
guest
@HeLLo_Bianca@xanga - you have to do that for weeks and your hair will be super nice
sunflower / 413 posts
@Coffeebee@xanga - Technically you’re hair isn’t healthy at all. It’s dead skin cells. It is impossible for something dead to be healthy. Shiny and beautiful maybe but not healthy.
guest
@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - Good idea! I tend to forget the basic tools available at Sally Beauty and just think of the fancy shampoos and false eyelashes. Thanks.
guest
@interludeB@xanga - My dandruff was my hesitation. But my dandruff is actually better now using my apple cider vinegar rinse than it was using head and shoulders. And the transition can be pretty gross. It lasts 1-3 months. I used corn starch to combat the greasiness and I washed my hair with baking soda water more often at that point. I also did it over the summer, while I didn’t have a job or school. Now I don’t experience my hair drying out the first day and then being greasy the second. It’s just always soft and normal.
My biggest issue was my hair didn’t smell like anything. I took advice from a friend who uses apple cider too and she suggested a bit of vanilla and a cinnamon stick. Smells awesome, man approved.
I also forgot to mention what someone else already did: Bore bristle brush is a must have along with a comb. And they will be gross because it’s how you get the gunk out of your hair and distribute the sebum throughout your hair. At least no one will want to borrow your comb/brush.

Ughhh I want to do this, but I don’t have the patience. My hair (especially the bangs) gets super oily after just one day without washing. I know I’d only may it through about three days before giving up.

@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - Ok so hair is protein. Doesn’t make it alive. Things have to be alive to have health. Your hair can be strong, flexible, and shiny, but not healthy. There were shampoo comanies being investigated for their advertising about having healthy hair because hair is dead and cannot be healthy.

I’m trying this! I’m actually easing my hair into it at the moment
I’ve gone from washing my hair every day to washing it twice a week and it’s made the world of difference! Eventually, I want to cut shampoo out and use completely natural products on my hair too.
sunflower / 295 posts
I shampoo/condition mine about once a week find its also easier to style that way too. and just generally looks just as good

@Digital_Angel21@xanga - that’s an awesome idea. I was doing the apple cider/baking soda thing for a while, but I missed yummy smells. Apple cider vinegar and baking soda would be much much cheaper than the shampoo I use.
_________________________________________
I was doing the no shampoo method for a while when I stopped relaxing my hair, but then I switched to all natural shampoos (that don’t contain emulsifiers). After reading through the comments, I think I might take up the baking soda/vinegar thing again. I stopped doing that because shampoos smell nice, but adding cinnamon, vanilla, or any other essential oil would make my hair smell good as well.

This has been on my mind for a while now.
My hair’s curly and frizzy and nuts.
I let it get wet once a week, twice if I’m feeling really motivated. I don’t like using shampoo; once or twice a month I’ll use it.. when I feel like the “gunk” won’t come out. Commercial shampoos I’m talking about here. (I just sort of realized that I should just “save up” for a good quality shampoo and use that instead. Makes all the difference.) Anyway, I comb my curls in the shower when they’re wet and because my scalp is constantly dry, that helps lift away some of the dead skin that makes me crazy with itch. I condition with equally-as-shitty conditioner. Sometimes. I’m in the process of trying to figure out what works for my hair and what doesn’t. Most things don’t, but washing it the very least amount possible helps a lot, so that’s a start.
Now if only the damn itch would go away! Something’s out of whack there for sure. Shit. I have an oily complexion and a dry scalp. What the hell?
sunflower / 338 posts
I wish I could do this. After about 12 hours, my scalp and hair start to get oily. After 24 hours, they’re pretty gross. If I go much longer, it takes me a couple of days to get all the excess oil out of my hair with regular showering.

I don’t even want to imagine what you’d smell like.
Intuitively, Vinegar and Baking Soda don’t smell too swell. Although, how they compare with regular old body odor might be up for debate. I might be wrong though. (Have you noticed people moving away from you on buses or subways?)
Interestingly enough, I feel like this might be a cultural thing (most of the commenters are Caucasian). If I ever told my mother I didn’t shower every day she’d probably disown me. She rabo limpio y pelo sucio. And I remember the first time I heard of this “no shampooing daily/shampooing once every blue moon” shenanigan my reaction was the same as my mother’s. –Disgusting.
I can appreciate alternating shampoo days or even skipping some but not doing something like this continuously. It doesn’t sit too well with my tummy or nostrils.

@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - hi, i have really thin, straight hair. i’m currently trying to grow my hair out, but lately i’ve noticed that more and more strands of hair fall out every day in the shower. i shampoo and condition my hair everyday, but i’m thinking about reducing this to maybe once or twice a week. my main problem isn’t the oil, but the smell of my scalp after a day. what’s the best way to go sans shampoo but still have clean hair? what’s your take on dry shampoos?
guest
I’ll do conditioner-only every day for two or three days and then wash with a sulfate-free shampoo on the third/fourth day. There will be random days here and there where I’ll do water-only, or even nothing at all.
I like having good-smelling hair and I’m sure my boyfriend appreciates it too.
guest
no offense but doesn’t it smell if you don’t use shampoo/conditioner?
guest
I try to only wash my hair every two days but its hard considering I work in a nasty, greasy environment.

@kolipoli@xanga - I get the impression these people are showering, just not washing their hair. so, no, they probably don’t stink. and I don’t really think it’s cultural really, because I’m pretty sure black people don’t shampoo their hair everyday.
overall, this post is interesting. I never thought of a life without shampoo. and @Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook, you really seem to know what you’re talking about. you are the the no-poo guru. haha

I used to shower every other day and my hair was still a dirt ball. And I remember once on vacation as a kid, I remembered my conditioner but not my shampoo, and it made my hair all icky! Works for some people, definitely not me though.
guest
@kolipoli@xanga - I had people smell my hair before I started scenting my vinegar rinse and it smelled like nothing. Didn’t smell like vinegar, didn’t smell bad, just smelled like…normal hair. The guy I was dating this summer was completely dumbfounded. He liked when I started smelling like cinnamon and vanilla, though. Guys love those smells.

I wash/condition then go two days, condition only, then go two days then wash/condition and so on and sorth. So, I wash every four days and condition only every four days alternately.

This blew my mind, I want to basically never wash my hair again too haha. Different for me, being a guy, but my hair is still longer than most guys I know.

definitely depends on the hair. I know people that only washed their hair 3 times a week, but for me, I could never – my hair gets greasy overnight. it really sucks.

I tried so hard to do the No ‘Poo thing, but it didn’t work for me. My hair was SO oily it looked so bad and I need to look professional in my job.
On average now I shampoo only once a week, twice if I have a big meeting and I never ever condition the top of my head, only the ends.

@kolipoli@xanga - No, my hair actually does not smell.

@magswags@xanga - I’m so glad you said this! I was starting to think…maybe I’m overdoing it for no reason? But I have INSANELY fine hair and I have to wash it every single day or it gets disgusting. I don’t think this would work for me.
