Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are expanding their empire, one $39,000 backpack at a time. The alligator-skin backpack pictured above is part of the Olsen twins’ new handbag collection and quite literally costs as much as a very nice car. The crazy thing is, there are people out there who are actually buying this thing!
During a cocktail party at Paris Fashion Week, Ashley Olsen revealed that the bag was flying off the shelves, saying “It was the first thing that sold off the shelf. During our last economic crisis in the U.S., the only thing that went up was Hermes.” (source)
What do you think about spending $39,000 on a bag? What is the most you would spend on a frivolous purchase like this?

I think spending even $39 dollars on a bag is a waste of money.
guest
yeaaaaaaa…. no.

I don’t think these things are worth anything, but if the twins can pull that off.

It’s cute, but it’s not $39k cute. How ridiculous.

At least most Hermes bags aren’t this fugly.
guest
I can hardly bring myself to spend more than $39 on any purse or backpack or anything like that..
guest
39k? For that thing? Uh, hell no. I’d use that money, that is, if I had it in the first place, for something else.

It’s not that cute.

idk how these things can sell. i mean. anyone who can afford a 39k bag probably would splurge on a known and very exclusive brand instead, not something by olsen twins.

Any one who buys that is f***ing stupid and obviously has too much money that they no longer know what to do with it. Wouldn’t your money be better spent supporting some sort of charity or cancer research or something worthwhile? Jesus H. Christ.
guest
That is cruel. To your wallet AND the animal.. Bitches
guest
er… no. you could pay off your tuition fee with that money. then again, not sure where you’d get that much money in the first place as a student
guest
I wouldn’t spend that much on a bag..I wouldn’t spend more than a few hundred bucks on a really good quality bag. But if someone has that much money to blow, then who freaking cares. That much money is like pocket change to some people, and no, they are not obligated to donate to a charity like everybody seems to think about everybody who has this kind of money.
guest
eh……it’s not even cute??? ….I wouldn’t even pay five dollars for that backpack.
thought they had better style..
guest
id rather buy a car and pay for rent. and food.

i’d rather pay for school, buy food, and pay my bills…but whatever.

Alligators should sell Olsen Twin backpacks.

@katethoughts@xanga - Their brand, The Row, is actually very exclusive and worn by many celebrities. They’ve become extremely successful.
Not nuts about the bag nor the price tag, though. I’m also not a fan of animal cruelty – and I hope that this isn’t the case.
guest
if you have 39k to spend on this bag im sure you’re not entirely worried about student loans and your wallet lol good for you if you get it. i’d rather buy a car, graduate, etc but thats because im not rolling in the duckets… yet
guest
I would not buy a backpack that costs a year of university.
also, its hideous.
guest
I would pay my OSAP. =_=

No they don’t lol. they want the 300,000 people in the world who buy these things to pay them that much for that bag. They don’t want us to buy their line lol.
guest
nice to know that some people aren’t suffering greatly from the recession -______-
guest
This just made me vom.
guest
wow…who is buying these bags?
guest
i kind of think it’s cute.. minus the material
but there’s no chance i’d spend 39k on it
guest
That is insanely too expensive. The bag isn’t even that nice looking. I could buy my car twenty times with that money!
@AsToldByKatie@xanga - Well, then, I guess my $75 leather purse (after weeks of scouring sales at Dillard’s!) is a colossal waste, even though it’s lasted me four years so far and going strong. o_0
guest
i wouldn’t spend $5 on that backpack. it’s ugly.
guest
I don’t like that bag, and even if I did, I wouldn’t spend that much on anything ever except a house. I wouldn’t even spend $30 on a bag unless I really liked it and really needed it. I’d be more likely to get it much cheaper at a thrift store, though.

@nyclegodesi24@xanga - Lol yes!

@TallandThinIsBetter@xanga - Good point!

@AsToldByKatie@xanga - $39,000 is ridiculous, but bags that are a tiny bit more expensive (I’m talking maybe $40-$50) last longer. I’m not saying anyone should spend more than they have, but I’ll defend buying a decent bag any day. I’ve had purses that lasted me for years because they were a little bit nicer, as opposed to cheaper ones I’ve purchased that wore out quickly.

Hey if people can afford the bag and want it, they will get it. There’s nothing we can do or say to stop them. In my opinion, it’s better to spend that money other where but that’s just me. I wouldn’t know if my mind changes if I ever got rich. It’s something to think about it, I’m sure.
guest
That’s insane.
guest
Aaaaaaaand it’s hideous.
guest
if i had the kind of money where 39k was a frivolous amount, i’d be giving a lot more to charity.
daffodil / 1615 posts
No thanks. I’ll take my Oakley backpack that is puncture-proof and water-resistant. And that I got for half off…
guest
Yeah, no. If I had 39K, I would not be spending it on an ugly backpack. I would use it to buy a car that doesn’t lose parts when I drive it like my current one does. I’d use what’s left of it to pay off the replacement vehicle I have which I had to purchase when my old car flooded. And then if anything was left, I’d start working on my student loans.
guest
No, way to expensive. Plus I’d hate to have an alligator killed just for me to have an ugly ass bag.

If they wrestled and skinned the alligator (or crocodile? I’ve seen it reported as both) themselves, then it might be worth something closer to this price. Otherwise, no. Just … no.
